MI5 Terrorism Warning - How do you feel?

I personally want to curl up in a ball and never be more than 5ft away from any of my family again.

I am terrified by the waring issued from the head of MI5.

At 8 months pregnant, I am begining to wonder why we are bringing a second child in to world where people are killing so mercilessly and needlessy and where the environment is about to be ruined beyond repair. I can do my bit for the environment. But politley asking Please Mr Terrorist dont hurt us' is not going to bugger all.

Why are these people doing this. I have nothing against them, and I can't help what the government does - I am one person who loves my family and wants to raise my children to enjoy the world and make positive contributions

Please someone tell me I am not alone in feeling so desperate and frightened. I know we are supposed to stand up to terror threats - but I can't - they have achieved their goal with me - I am terrified!

nope i feel frightened too, but i remeber being frightened by nuclear war and the ira.

what i mean is there is always something to worry about, which is beyond our control. please try and relax and have faith

no point worrying about it. stuff happens every day to people that has nothing to do with terrorism. you can't worry about these things. more chance of being run over by a bus and all that..

Yeah, I'm very uncomfortable living in London which is such an obvious target, and a bit p. off at my dp for dragging me over here. Can't wait to get back to little NZ which is miles away, doesn't really have any military with which to be involved in wars and doesn't have any resources anybody wants.... Recommend you come back with me .... I'm 7 months pg and I don't think that helps either.

I remeber the IRA attackes from the 80's, but feel that technological advances have allowed the new generation of terrorism to become much more powerful and dangerous.

Also - and dont ask me why, I always felt the IRA (I was areound 10 years old - so my understanding may be off target) were trying to put a message across, where as the threat these days is much greater because the people carrying out the attacks are all about the killing, not worrying the Government etc.

Thanks Poppy - just might take you up on that! DH wants to emmigrate to USA - but NZ sounds a lot nicer and a lot calmer!

You are ao level headed! Perhaps I need to avoid watching news and reading papers until after new baby arrives and hormones allow me a better perspective....

Refuse to watch disaster movies - they just depress me.

Am very big scaredy cat! In fact may change my nickname to reflect the quivering wreck that I am!

Vanilla, dont worry about these things. We have ALWAYS been under threat in this countyr, and probably always will be sadly, (unless the whole world is led by women).
When you are pregnant you do feel especially vulnerable and protective of your family here and not yet here, that's perfectly natural and I would say most of us on MN have felt the same way at times.
But, right now I prefer to think that the greatest threat is Global warming and that little old YOU can do something to help stop that threat.
Sounds corny but you have more power that way.

I have to say I am trying to do as much as I can for the environment and would like to thing it's one thing that I can do something about. Dh is still trying to work out what's going on with me as I have recently bought a compost bin. Decided on reuseable nappies this time and fitted the entire house out with low energy light bulbs as well as constantly looking in MN for whatever else I can do

Felt like this with DD1 and have always been a bit of a worrier even when not PG. But this time it all feels much worse

I worry too, but have to agree that this warning is so bizaare that there has to be more to it than simply alerting the public, and the fact that TB has come out in support so quickly suggests his hand in it somewhere. The warning itself seems to serve no purpose other than to scare us all witless and to provoke yet more anti-Muslim feeling. There is absolutely nothing any of us can do about it and I think the Gov would actually be doing us all a service if the just kept quiet about it.

Maybe joining a peace organisation like CND might help? I know that it won't stop either the terrorists or war-mongering politicians, but at least you will be making a stand and taking some action to make our world a little safer?

That article from the link is b*cks - there is no way MI5 has 2800 staff - I've only seen Harry, Adam, Naz, Jo, the one off Cold Feet and the Boffin-man.

Seriously though, I agree it does sound political, but I don't doubt the threat is real enough. I'm more worried about a flu pandemic though personally.

or a precursor to the government introducing even more draconian curtailment of civil liberties.....frankly have little/no confidence in the 'intelligence services'.....WMD? Ha! A chemical loo just outside Baghdad..and the "thick" Irish ran rings round them for 25 years before they thought it wise to 'leave'...nope, don't worry, you are under no greater or lesser threat now than you were yesterday morning......except from our own incompetent "intelligence"...Graham Greene said it all in "Our Man in Havana"....

Re the flu pandemic, a friend of mine who went on a conference about this in NZ (where the threat was seen as more imminent) said that the current thinking is the strain everyone is getting in a state about is unlikely to trigger a pandemic as it has to go through too many mutations.

There is always something to worry about. When I was pregnant with DD, Chernobyl blew up and I walked the dog in the drizzle of the North East coast and panicked about radio-activity in the rain.

When I was a wee teenager and venturing into the world of pubs and clubs, the Yorkshire Ripper was out there doing his worst. My mum was scared shitless, but did I even notice as a 15 year old? Did I buggery.

i feel really scared vanilla too. i'm pg too. but don't think that is why i feel scared. i think the warning is to cover their backs because another major attack is bound to happen in the next year or two and they want to say 'we gave you some warning', i am not cynical about the timing of it personally; tho obviously i wouldn't trust TB at the best of times; but the threat is so obviously as huge as they say and a chemical/biological attack is a near-certainty in the future in UK - stay away from big cities is my new policy i know this isn't the blitz spirit but hey.. it's not the blitz..

but yeah i think the flu pandemic will get us first.. and global warming will finish us and our children off just in case any of us are still here after the biological attacks.. cheerful stuff huh?

You are not the only one who is worried about terrorist threats, and the increasing levels of violence and agression in the world, but the thing is if you look back in history there has always been some sort of threat from somewhere, but people survive.

I do think that governments and politicians also make the threats appear worse it helps them justify actions they may take

I also think you worry more when you are pregnant, you instinctively feel more protective.
