Thomas Cook - ugly

Daily Mail have exposed that Thomas Cook received £3.5million in compensation for the death of those two children in Corfu. Thomas Cook did everything in their power to thwart the family trying to get justice.

The family have a horrendous experience to tell, utterly shocking and appalling treatment of them by Thomas Cook.

It is hard to believe that a big company like that could only think of one thing, i.e. trying to preserve their corporate image. I am so glad the family managed to get a public inquest (despite Thomas Cook fighting it all the way) and they are now free to tell their story.

Thomas Cook still have refused to apologise, it is just horrific reading what that family have endured for the past 7 years.

BTW, I am sure they can offer compensation for pain and suffering without ever admitting any liability whatsoever. It happens all the time.

They deserve to go bust.

Is there anything we can share on Twitter (I don't do Facebook)?
Does anyone have the change.org link?
I would never use Thomas Cook.
Flowers for the poor family.

phrbridge will know for sure, but I suspect that, IN LAW, children are not 'worth' much. If a wage-earner dies, a claim could cover their future earnings, lost to the family - but children don't earn. Hence I suspect that the family were only entitled to compensation for their distress, which in the uk isn't set at a large amount.

Might it be that the family still has the option of suing Thomas Cook in the UK for negligence? Indeed, waiting until after the inquest is arguably a better time for that? And so Thomas Cook might still be wary of giving them anything, or saying anything, that could indicate liability.

In short, I hope there will still be a settlement one way or another.

Now Fankhauser is going to see the family - do you think it was the email I sent him ? Or sheer desperation -as he really hasn't got a clue what to do.

I may be wrong, but I don't think the parents did take action against the hotel in the Greek courts

You may well be right. I haven't followed the case closely. The accounts I've seen in the press seem somewhat confused about who took action against whom and when.

children are not 'worth' much

I'm afraid that is true. An adult will generally have dependents who can claim based on the deceased's earnings. An adult may also leave a will which means their estate can claim on their behalf. Children have neither of these so compensation is limited to funeral expenses and bereavement loss. Rightly or wrongly this is usually a relatively small amount.

Might it be that the family still has the option of suing Thomas Cook in the UK for negligence?

I am unclear whether or not they have already sued Thomas Cook. But even if they haven't it is now far too late to make a claim. The children died 9 years ago.

The extra money went to charity, the family didn't want it. The CEO apologised and said the money should have been given to charity straight away. He admitted it wasn't handled well and got told it was too little too late and that he was insincere. TC are pretty much damned if they do and damned if they don't.
If you don't want to use them then that's obviously your choice. But with over 20 thousand employees I think the call for them to go out of business is a fucking disgrace. No one involved in this tragedy even works there any more do they? People are starting online hate campaigns, spitting at staff in the shops and harassing people in head office who are basically junior admin staff.
The people to blame were at the hotel. They lied about their property and at the time the checks were not what they are now. No one would wish what happened to that family on anyone but TC weren't the only people who sold that hotel. People need to re direct their anger to the right people.
I don't know why just the sight of an advert offends people so much but you will still see it away from the Mumsnet bubble. Be prepared for it flowers.

You're right to not believe it, it isn't true. It's Thomson who sell the hotel. Exclusive to them. Not Thomas Cook. Maybe Thomson should get a boycott?
