Thomas Cook - ugly

Daily Mail have exposed that Thomas Cook received £3.5million in compensation for the death of those two children in Corfu. Thomas Cook did everything in their power to thwart the family trying to get justice.

The family have a horrendous experience to tell, utterly shocking and appalling treatment of them by Thomas Cook.

It is hard to believe that a big company like that could only think of one thing, i.e. trying to preserve their corporate image. I am so glad the family managed to get a public inquest (despite Thomas Cook fighting it all the way) and they are now free to tell their story.

Thomas Cook still have refused to apologise, it is just horrific reading what that family have endured for the past 7 years.

No point in boycotting them. If the business fails it will just mean that thousands of people lose their jobs.

blowinahoolie · 18/05/2015 16:08

Why not just donate all £3million to the family or part of that to charity too and be done with it. The business doesn't need the money. Mind you, the might do now that people are put off with that shocking attitude toward this particular family!

cathpip · 18/05/2015 16:09

The rest of the money was used to cover legal costs which i find disgusting, they are a large company and should swallow this. No amount of money will ever compensate for the death of those two children, tc have IMO behaved appallingly throughout this whole ordeal.

blowinahoolie · 18/05/2015 16:09

They are greedy fckers that's why, redshoe*.

redshoeblueshoe · 18/05/2015 16:17

blowin that's what I thought too bastards

hackmum · 18/05/2015 16:45

Rudebarbandcustard: "Why they aren't doing this, from a purely business point of view, regardless of what they ought to be doing from a morally right point of view, is truly beyond me."

I agree. And with redshoeblueshoe. It would be good if someone at the top just thought, Let's do what's right, rather than what's expedient.

mkz10 · 18/05/2015 17:17

Does anyone else feel that donation makes them look even worse, I can't really put my finger on why I feel it is so distasteful,

Why not involve the family of the children who died? why not ask the family what they would like to do with it

Why can't they just apologise to the family, offer then some of that compensation as acknowledgment for the pain and suffering they have endured and will endure for the rest of their lives.

I just feel their response with the compensation is not remotely genuine, it should never have gone to a charity of their choice and it should have been done in the name of those children and their family.

Completely agree. They have paid the money because of what everybody else is feeling. And this just draws attention to the fact they don't seem to be feeling it too.

foraret · 18/05/2015 17:32

They could definitely have treated the family better.

Roussette · 18/05/2015 17:32

There is nothing worse than someone making a gesture (the donation) when their hand is forced. That means they didn't and don't really want to, they just have to. It leaves a nasty taste in the mouth.

They will never apologise - that is admitting liability and opening the floodgates for being sued (I imagine) but why in god's name does that matter - they are hardly some tinpot company - £33M profits in one quarter. They have been extremely shortsighted. In this era of social media they will lose far far more than money. They will lose goodwill and you just can't put a price on that. Serves them right for such bad handling of such a truly terrible tragedy that was their responsibility.

expatinscotland · 18/05/2015 17:47

We will never use those slimy bastards again. I am a bereaved parent and have a friend whose daughter died of accidental CO poisoning. TC actively tried to cover up their lack of responsibility and the appalling way they treated the family.

Roussette · 18/05/2015 17:57

They can make out all they like that it's the hotel's fault but in the end the family bought their holiday from TC, they didn't book direct with the hotel. That makes TC responsible.

It's like if you buy an iPad say from Argos. It goes wrong in a week and Argos tell you to go to Apple and complain. No. Your contract is with Argos.

I just do not understand why TC don't get this. That poor poor family's contract and the money paid was with TC and TC hold ultimate responsibility for what went wrong.

(I apologise for the crass comparison, I was just trying to get a point across because I am so incensed by the treatment of that family)

KatieScarlettreregged · 18/05/2015 18:02

We go away twice a year, always use TC.
Not any more. Fuck them.

soimpressed · 18/05/2015 18:26

I would not go on a holiday with them again either. I can't imagine how much pain the family are going through. What a lack of compassion they showed not apologising immediately.

prh47bridge · 18/05/2015 18:28

The rest of the money was used to cover legal costs which i find disgusting

To be precise, their insurers took the rest of the money to cover legal costs.

Your contract is with Argos

Indeed. And Argos have to deal with the problem. But guess what. In that situation Argos will go to Apple and get compensation from them for the faulty iPad. In much the same way if Thomas Cook paid any compensation to the parents they would be entitled to claim it back from the hotel. Whilst Thomas Cook's H&S audit was inadequate it was (and is) ultimately the hotel's responsibility to operate safely.

I am unclear as to why the parents took action against the hotel in the Greek courts instead of taking action against Thomas Cook in the UK.

glitteryflange · 18/05/2015 20:59

Apparently they are giving £1.5 million to charity.

redshoeblueshoe · 18/05/2015 22:52

£75 million wiped off the share value (on Press Preview -now) so I guess people will be losing their jobs. Sadly I doubt it will be those in power.

Pippioddstocking · 18/05/2015 22:57

I will be boycotting them also

hackmum · 19/05/2015 08:16

prh47bridge: I may be wrong, but I don't think the parents did take action against the hotel in the Greek courts. I think what happened is that staff at the hotel were prosecuted for manslaughter and subsequently the hotel paid compensation to the parents.

Separately, Thomas Cook took action in the UK against the hotel and was awarded damages. The UK courts found that the hotel was entirely at fault, and not Thomas Cook - at least according to this article:

www.travelweekly.co.uk/Articles/2013/07/30/44829/cook+wins+damages+from+carbon+monoxide+deaths+hotel.html

mkz10 · 19/05/2015 11:49

And I just read that the letter of 'regret' was not even sent directly to the parents, it was first given directly to the media !!!! The family were shown it from one of the newspapers who had received it from Thomas Cook.

My god, they really do not give one shit about the family and those little kids.

Watch for a Thomas Cook re-branding soon, they have tarnished their name forever as a result of their handling of this incident.

I have written an email to their PR and customer service, contact details on the Thomas Cook corporate website.
