Hackney, the worst place to live in Britain?

MrsOhHu · 01/11/2006 09:58

It certainly is bad if you need the council to do anything. It's really bad. It is a place for criminals run by criminals. It also has some fantastic people, good houses and lovely green space. Sadly Hackney is losing a lot of the people a borough should be proud of.

I went to the Lido mid-November (visiting friends, used to live in Hackney). Had a rotten hangover, but the water was just about warm enough if we kept swimming - though the outside bit between the water and the changing rooms was freezing. I liked it - swimming with leaves was weird - it'll be great in the summer, although crowded I'd imagine.

goldenoldie · 23/12/2006 10:43

Hello Hoxtonchick!

I do like the idea of swimming with leaves (if only I could swim.............can't really blame the council for that!

kid · 23/12/2006 10:51

I don't like the idea of swimming outside, it would be freezing at this time of year. Is it open all year round?

kid · 23/12/2006 10:51

(I'm not far from London Fields)

MrsOhHu · 28/12/2006 16:23

Oh to not live in Hackney, Hoxtonchick! It's a pity because there are some good people who live in Hackney. Sadly I don't think that opening a lido in the middle of winter is a good enough reason to stay in a place. I can't wait to get out. It won't be long before the Marshes are sold off with the Olympic mess. Hackney has already given public land to private developers.

Hello Dinosaur - spill the beans on Yorkshire then - just how dreadful was it???????????

Think things much be changing - saw a very affluent couple with their bugaboo in the Dalston shopping centre. Must have escaped their Church St cordon for the day!

themoon66 · 30/12/2006 22:15

hey-hey... dissing yorkshire?

hoxtonchick · 30/12/2006 22:19

wow, you clearly haven't been to broadway market recently goldenoldie, you can't move for high spec buggies (am a bit as we have a bright orange mountain buggy, but ho hum...)

hi dino. i'm from yorkshire too!

goldenoldie · 31/12/2006 15:27

Broadway market has been full of yuppies for aeons - I'm talking hardcore Dalston.

MrsOhHu · 05/01/2007 14:59

There are Bugaboos on the loose on Hackney Downs and even in Lower Clapton.

goldenoldie, blimey, I was shopping in Ridley Road when I was a DINKY

Yorkshire - God, what's good about it? I was dragged there when I was nine years old from Ireland and have never forgiven the place .

goldenoldie · 07/01/2007 14:46

Dino - what is there for a DINKY in Ridley Road?

goldenoldie · 07/01/2007 14:51

Never go to Hackney Downs or Lower Clapton so I've missed the Bugaboo invasion there.

Dinosaur · 08/01/2007 10:08

Er - vegetables!

How are you anyway, goldenoldie?

MrsOhHu · 08/01/2007 11:02

Hackney Downs is OK - possibly safer than London Fields and with really good park wardens. There are a lot of fighting dogs out and about and dodgy characters. Clapton is full of Yardie gangs, guns and drugs, people smugglers and thieves. It depends a lot on which road you live on and where on a particular road. It is easier said than done to up sticks and move when there is more than one of you. Ridley Road is great for toys!

Dinosaur · 08/01/2007 11:11

I haven't been to Ridley Road in eons. Must take the DSs over there some Saturday; it would make a change from poncing round the farmers' market in Stoke Newington...

I think MrsOhHu makes a good point about planning / industry in inner-city areas. Brixton is suffering hugely because all the new build is housing and all the employment opportuinities are being squeezed out by land values and flagrant misuse of planning loopholes. Businesses are good for an area: businesses have clout with the council, work hard to ensure a good environment for customers, support schools and voluntary sector projects, bring in workers to use local shops and promote the economy of the area....and provide employment.

All my Hackney-dweller friends love it - it has some fab pubs!

krabbiepatty · 08/01/2007 11:38

i must say that felt glad to get back here after a visit to slumbrous muswell hill...

fleacircus · 08/01/2007 11:53

I grew up in Winchester - it's ok to visit but for teenagers there's nothing to do but drugs. My sister lives in Hackney and I'm just over the border in Islington. Wouldn't move back to Winchester in a million years!

MrsOhHu · 08/01/2007 15:22

Do any of you know the Marshes? They are Hackney's big secret - acres and acres of open space (football pitches) - lovely woods, a murky bit of river - you can get to the Regents Canal from the Marshes, or you can go along the Lea to Hertfordshire. It is a fantastic place. Hackney looks after(?) the football pitches but not far away is the Walthamstow side where the riding school and the ice rink are.

Yes, very well, one of main reasons I moved to Clapton - it's so near to all that green space. Used to walk DSs up canal bank to Springfield Park when they were little. There used to be a lovely little One O'Clock Club up there.

MrsOhHu · 08/01/2007 16:26

Is that the place that is now a private school? In Springfield Park?

OP posts:
Dinosaur · 08/01/2007 21:29

I haven't been up there for ages, but I don't think it can be - it was just a tiny little hut, right on the bank of the river.

hoxtonchick · 08/01/2007 21:32

when dp lived on a canal boat it as moored in springfield marina. gorgeous. great greasy spoon caff next to the footbridge.
