exactly my thought sue!
any woman who would call her children Loor-Dez (shudder) and Rocco probably wouldn't pick David.

alex8 · 27/10/2006 16:36

if you adopt a child within the UK you have to keep its birth name.

scarysuejonez · 27/10/2006 20:35

I didn't know that. Even children adopted very young?

FullOfTestosterone · 27/10/2006 20:55

err.. Lourdes and rocco are very italian names.
As "Madonna"...
She is from an italian-american background. Lourdes father is latin, it makes a lot of sense to me...

ScareyCaligulaCorday · 27/10/2006 21:05

I know an Italian called Rocco.

It's not that unusual

Moomin · 27/10/2006 21:20

on the oprah interview she was on a big lin-up screen so i guess she was still in London

I feel awful that I believed a lot of what I was listening to/watching/reading about the adoption from the media over here (ie rich bitch 'buys' a kid) when it was nothing like that I realise now. (and believe me I'm Mrs Cynical and don't buy a daily newspaper because not one word most of the papers write can be trusted). So, I stand corrected and admit I had a little tear in my eye when I saw the pics. He's an adorable baby. I hope he and they are very happy.

scarysuejonez · 27/10/2006 21:32

Moomin - the media here is always slanted toward "ritch bitch buys a child" in any intercountry adoption stories. You just probably don't notice the occassional stories because they're not famous people.

Most intercountry adopters won't give media interviews anymore as they've had their fingers burnt so often. Rarely mentioned is the 2-3 yr journey that it takes, the preparation and training, the criminal records checks, references, medicals and trawling through your innermost secrets and finances. And as a group we are probably more aware than most of the need to keep the children in touch with as much of their past/birth country as possible. Ultimately the British media disapprove of intercountry adoption and its such a small community (about 300 a year) that the general public are not aware of the misrepresentations.

Bit of a ramble there

I'm adopted and am 38 but even when my parents were going through the adoption process in tha late 60s they were interviewed and inspected at every turn. Someone even came round to inspect their drains! so I can well imagine what hoops people have to jumpt through to adopt from another country. Good luck to anyone that is resilient enough to do this and see it through. My adoptive parents were/are the best people I've ever met - truely.

scarysuejonez · 27/10/2006 21:40

These days the process for overseas is the same as UK but when you finish the UK system you START on the other country's system

Nice to hear your parents did something right - I hope junior will be half as nice about me one day [fingers crossed emoticon]

sorrell · 27/10/2006 21:41

Half-Italian woman gives her kids traditional Italian names shock! Blimey, that woman really can't do anything to please, can she?

Kidstrack · 27/10/2006 21:43

lovely pictures, at least its one more child that has been saved

scarysuejonez · 27/10/2006 21:45

I wasn't having a go at her kids names - I have absolutely no view on them at all (or her for that matter) - all I said what that her kids had more exotic names than "David" so guessed it was his birth name.

scarysuejonez · 27/10/2006 21:47

and I thought Lourdes was much more commonly used in Latin America than Italy. I always assumed it was a link to her daughters father.

northerner · 28/10/2006 15:42

I know a Rocco. And lets not forget the famous hotelier Rocco Forte.

my problem with the name lourdes wasn't with the name itself but the pronounciation.

scarysuejonez · 28/10/2006 21:50

And anyway I don't see why I can't Madonna bash, she's always outrageously rude to me when we meet. And her minders trample mud into my carpet

sorrell · 28/10/2006 21:52

a/what is wrong with the pronounciation?
b/How do you know how Madonna says it?

alex8 · 29/10/2006 16:00

sue, thats what my friend and her brother have been told by 2 different authorities as they are both in the middle of the home study for adoption. My friend is hoping to have an under 2 as her son is 3 and she had been told they have to be a certain amount younger than exisitng children. The odd thing is that names can often be indicators of class and background, would a Chantelle or Tiffany growing up amongst a Freya or a Hugo (for example) feel the odd one out?
