Labour 'face an existential threat from UKIP in the South'

Tell us something we don't already know and celebrate regularly.

'A Labour candidate for parliament has said his party could be wiped from the map of MPs in parts of southern England such as Kent, unless it effectively battles the advance of Ukip' Grin

'Speaking of Labour’s presence in the south, particularly places where it has no MPs but some councillors, he said: “They do really have … a real risk from Ukip. Our own constituency is one of them. Canterbury is one, many seats in Kent, where I do think the risk is an existential one, they might not exist after May if Ukip move at the pace they are.”

And it's not just Labour who face an "existential threat" from UKIP. The Tories are so panicked they have started to act incoherently, but to be frank it's hard to tell the difference as that is their usual state.

Everybody will get out and vote and they will finish the spinners off.

The revolution will be televised, the spinners will be surprised when Farage grabs the prize and the people are on the rise.

Listen to the news programmes on the BBC like today. Listen to Labour candidates talking in Scotland. It's tragic. They say the same old, same old and it is now obviously irrelevant.

The world has moved on, the people have moved on and have abandoned them, the people think they are pointless and irrelevant and yet all they can do is come out with the same old, same old. "Don't vote SNP or you'll let the Tories in". It is pathetic and it is tragic for a once great party that represented working people but now represents only the

‘I saw middle-class, public-sector, well-educated young graduates voting Labour

And it is because of their out of touch Oxbridge elite leadership that lost touch with ordinary people, that patronized them and preached to them and who have now abandoned them.

"At the same meeting at the Labour local government conference, John Denham, a Labour former cabinet minister and leader of the party’s southern taskforce, admitted the party needed to listen to voters more. “We preach so much and we listen so little that we’ll never get anywhere unless we turn those two things round,” he said."

What a calamity but they have only themselves to blame. They should have served the people, but some of them were serving business and lining their pockets instead.

The Tories will squeak through. They think they will win which is why they are running scared about the TV debates and don't need to risk being destroyed by Farage.

The Tories will get over the line just, but their future is disastrous too. Their victory will be Pyrrhic because they represent hardly anyone anymore. They have no vision, no courage, no target. They drift from focus group to focus group and their luvvie thinkers like Tim Montgomerie who is always on our TV screens have so little courage and vision that they even suggest we should move our Parliament out of London if the Houses of Parliament are refurbished.

A focus group probably told them that UKIP and the people are anti London. But they don't get it. We don't dislike London. We love our great capital city but we dislike the metropolitan elite luvvies who preach and patronize the people from London. We don't want to move our Parlaiment out, we want to move the luvvies out. And this election will be the start of restoring government for the people, of the people and by the people.

What absolute rubbish, the electoral map of the whole of England looks 'blue', it is only he inner cities labour have the English hold AND how can a party having made so many reforms since 2010 i.e. in lower taxes, education, benefits, building more council/social homes, cutting the cost of bureaucrats in the public sector, promoting private sector job growth AND the ONLY party wanting to save our grandchildren from more national debt after 2019/20 etc etc etc - have NO vision????

The Labour Party, SNP, Plaid Cymru, the Lib Dems (on their own) and the Greens are virtually the same in most issues and will downgrade our economy to mirror stagnant Europe - while UKIP/Farage tries to get in between all parties and tell voters what they want to hear - so where is the "vision" in that lot?

claig · 08/03/2015 01:00

"Ukip on track for 100-plus second places across England"

Ukip is on course to come second in at least 100 seats at the general election as it displaces the Tories, Labour and Lib Dems as the main opposition across large parts of the country, according to new analysis of the party’s electoral prospects on 7 May.

The extraordinary potential haul of Ukip “silver medals” – in an addition to a likely tally of half-a-dozen or so seats at Westminster – would represent a massive breakthrough for Nigel Farage’s anti-EU party, which failed to achieve even a single second place in 2010."

www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2015/mar/07/ukip-100-second-places-may-election-nigel-farage

Why has that happened and how did it start?

It started in the 2013 local elections when tens of thousands of Tory voters abandoned the Tory party because it was a politically correct progressive party with no vision and no mission apart from meeting the Guardian's agenda. They couldn't praise the windmill enough, they couldn't spend enough on foreign aid and they couldn't abandon Tory principles fast enough which is why the people abandoned them. Their luvvies insult the people of Clacton, they say the people are of the past and are left behnd. Well now we have left the luvvies behind. The people's insurgency spreads ever farther and the panic in Tory CCHQ grows ever greater.

Claig ... Why always the UKIP bridesmaid and not the bride, because the majority of people see Farage has as much "vision" for this country as Mr Miliband has in his populist soundbites.

Lets not forget that to-date, UKIP's only two MP's were turned from the Conservatives to the 'darkside' by a UKIP man with money and promises, no longer your Treasurer - back in the days when you wrote countless posts telling us more sitting MP's would follow.

While sustainable private sector growth all around the country has been achieved by the Conservatives (replacing millions of new Labour private sector quango and non jobs sprayed around the mainland to give the impression of 'growf', but never sustainable past the first recession) who was proposing the High Speed Train HS2, 3, 4, 5, 6 whatever, interconnecting the North with the South and the main cities of the North, to bridge that North-South even further than current economic growth shows?

  • Did Labour/Miliband 'the party of the North' originally procrastinating on HS2 for political points, finally get on board, I don't know.
  • Why did UKIP/Farage who proposed 3 new electrified train in their 2010 General Election manifesto, then opposed to the one HS2 train line a few years later, if not for political point scoring and votes along the proposed train corridor?

A government needs to support all businesses, not just with a low tax regime and an economy conducive for them to invest in jobs for years to come, but INFRASTRUCTURE as well, that WILL add to our economy and support further growth.

So Claig p-lease do not lecture anyone on a Conservative Party with no vision, well at least until UKIP manages to both tell 'the people' WHAT they stand for, and stand by 'it' for at LEAST, one 4 to 5-year parliament.

Maybe when they finally do that, they won't just be the bride, they get to do some horizontal folk dancing with the groom as well.

'Why did UKIP/Farage who proposed 3 new electrified train in their 2010 General Election manifesto, then opposed to the one HS2 train line a few years later'

Because Farage listens to the people and changes policies accordingly. UKIP is the people's party. If we have learned anything about UKIP, we have leaned that!

'until UKIP manages to both tell 'the people' WHAT they stand for'
UKIP stand for common sense which makes a refreshing change. If we have learned anything about UKIP, we have leaned that!

as a ukip supporter can you tell me their policy for people with disabilities?

claig · 09/03/2015 16:45

I don't know. Their manifesto is not out yet so it is too early to say.

Star Etheridge is their Disability Spokesman. She understands how bad current policies are for disabled people so I think she will be influential in coming up with good policies.

I don't think you'll find many disabled UKIP supports, claig.

Disabled people tend to be averse to fascist parties, for some reason.

Pixel · 10/03/2015 00:29

What a load of rubbish. Do you think there are no UKIP supporters with disabled family members? I thought David Cameron would understand the problems disability brings and look where that's got us.

blacksunday · 10/03/2015 08:14

I think it is far less likely that people with disabled family members would support UKIP.

If you think a party which is to the right of the Conservatives, and which claims to be 'the true heir to Thatcher' is going to show one ounce of compassion or care to your disabled family member... then you're incredibly misled.

Samcro · 10/03/2015 08:23

well I googled it. and this is the first think that came up

Why the Rise of UKIP is Dangerous for Disabled People

Many disabled people feel that none of the main political parties represent us: while the Condems are inflicting an unprecedented level of attack on disabled people’s rights and entitlements, we remember that it was New Labour who introduced Atos and the Work Capability Assessment and, much as Labour now tries to distance itself from the Blair and Brown years, they are failing to take a strong stand in defence of the welfare state.

As things become ever more desperate for disabled people pushed into poverty and destitution, with independent living under greater and greater threat, people are searching for a way to escape the onslaught. One thing that is certain in these uncertain times is that UKIP is not the answer.

UKIP have undeniably rattled and inflicted defeats on the government. They have also succeeded in capturing the imagination of substantial sections of the electorate, pulling support away from the Tories. They are however nothing but bad news for disabled people.

UKIP has clearly been linked to racist, homophobic and disabilist attitudes. In December 2013 a UKIP county council candidate was investigated for advocating compulsory abortion of foetuses with spina bifida and Down’s Syndrome. Examples of racist attitudes displayed by UKIP members are too widespread to be disregarded as anomalies. The rise of a party linked so clearly to anti-equalities and intolerance of diversity is not something disabled people can afford to celebrate even when it does weaken the Tories.

There does appear to have been a concerted effort by UKIP to reach out to disabled people’s groups to offer support and thereby contribute to building its own base. This does not mean that UKIP supports the principles of disability equality and independent living. Its policies are reactive, opportunistic and bigoted. Its focus on immigration is divisive, having the effect of shifting all the main political parties to the right, while diverting attention from the real issues, from the dismantling of the welfare state, the privatisation of the NHS and the attack on workers’ rights. They might succeed in blocking votes for the Condems but they are also holding back the development of a wider political consciousness that would actively fight for disabled people’s rights.

After the raft of benefit changes and cuts brought in from 1st April 2013 we saw real media attention focusing on welfare and a growing awareness among members of the public not yet personally affected by the cuts about the impact on disabled people – in spite of the lies and misrepresentations from Iain Duncan Smith. The rise of UKIP and their success in the elections has distracted the focus away from government attacks on the poorest and disabled members of society. Increasingly the problems caused by austerity are being blamed on government being soft on immigration instead of holding all political parties to account for the consequences of neoliberalism.
