So the Daily Mail report it as "thousands" whilst the Telegraph say "at least a thousand"

Can't find ANY other sources for it. How is this ok? Free speech yes...but...

OP posts:
JoanHickson · 08/02/2015 21:49

They have as much right to freedom of speech as say Katie Hopkins. It doesn't mean anyone will do as they ask.

Nerf · 08/02/2015 21:49

Just googled it and lots of sources came up. Didn't know it was happening til I saw the thread though.

BigRedBall · 08/02/2015 21:49

What do you mean? How is what ok? How do you know they're all Muslims? Are you saying they shouldn't speak out against what they think is wrong?

TrojanWhore · 08/02/2015 21:52

Free speech is exactly why it's OK.

It's not just for those whose views are found likeable, providing it falls within the law. And I do not see there is likely to be a problem with demonstrating in favour of a diverse pluriconfessional society where other faiths are respected. And a demonstration about Charlie Hebdo could be just as much that as something I would find unpleasant.

Piratespoo · 08/02/2015 21:54

I would like to know why they have chosen to demonstrate against this, rather than against the atrocities that are being perpetrated in the name of their religion in other countries. Surely that is more important!

chantico · 08/02/2015 21:58

From the Reuters account, they appear to have condemned attacks whilst asking for restraint on level of insult caused by publications.

lljkk · 08/02/2015 22:03

How is what is okay? What is this thread about, anyway?
According to the Torygraph the "huge crowd" also delivered a petition to Downing street expressing condemnation of the Charlie Hebdo attacks and thanks to the British media for not publishing what they find offensive cartoons.

I don't find the cartoons offensive, I don't understand why Islam is so selectively tetchy about images of the Prophet, but I can't object to individuals saying how they feel about the cartoons. Sheesh.

lunar1 · 08/02/2015 22:07

I'm not quite sure I get it. Are people using free speech to complain about others having free speech?

MrsTawdry · 08/02/2015 22:12

Pirate put into words my feelings. I really don't think it's ok that they're supporting the actions of the terrorists in this way. And that's what they are doing.

MrsTawdry · 08/02/2015 22:13

Chantico thank you...I shuold look at Reuters and NOT at the stinking Daily Mail! How could I have fallen for that SHIT!

I was in London today and we came across this rally by embankment area. We googled it, but it was really quite large, coaches of people, many many people on the streets. All that came up when we googled was a muslim March tbh we didn't see what it was for as such, but it was unsettling like any large orchestrated loud rally would be.

LovestFromest · 08/02/2015 22:18

I don't see how they're supporting the murderers' actions though. They are holding a protest to get their message across. That's the civilised way to do it. Surely it's perfectly acceptable to believe that people have the right to do or say something, yet still want to.make it.clear that you wish they wouldn't?

Fairylea · 08/02/2015 22:19

What pirates said.

Bakeoffcakes · 08/02/2015 22:21

The horrific event this week, towards the Jordanian pilot, were done in the name of Islam. If I were a Muslim I'd be demostrating against that.

Bakeoffcakes · 08/02/2015 22:22

Sorry just seen Pirate has said the same thing.

ReallyTired · 08/02/2015 22:25

What is your problem? A group of people (mainly muslin) don't like Charlie hebdo cartoons so are having a peaceful protest. I feel it's British values in action. No one is being hurt.

I don't like Charlie Hebdo cartoons, I don't support the murderers. I find the cartoons puerile, but killing the cartoonists was unacceptable.

BigRedBall · 08/02/2015 22:26

What lovestfromest said.

I think what they're doing is absolutely fine.

Nobody would blink an eye if it were Jews with "stop anti-semetism" banners.

BigRedBall · 08/02/2015 22:27

bakeoff you don't have to be muslim to demonstrate against crimes against Muslims. You're a part of humanity aren't you?

jeanswithatwist · 08/02/2015 23:02

why bring 'the jews' into it (bigred) ffs

waitingowaiting · 08/02/2015 23:07

So not the 'million' predicted on the radio this morning?

NadiaWadia · 09/02/2015 03:29

What exactly do they want the government to do about it? They are being ridiculous and need to sort their priorities out, IMO. Of course they have the right to a peaceful protest, but I certainly don't think the government should be appeasing them on this. I understand Charlie Hebdo covers have already been reproduced in some of the British media. The images I have seen are couldn't really be said to be offensive, anyway, unless it is just the fact that it's a picture of someone who might be Mohammed they are objecting to.

OK, they are saying Islam forbids images of their prophet (although apparently in earlier centuries this was not the case). Fine, if you believe this then don't have the images. But why are they demanding that everyone else has to follow this rule as well, when it means nothing to them? They are expecting too much, and I find it quite arrogant.

Nerf · 09/02/2015 07:16

What was interesting in the speech made was the use of Muslims rather than terrorists when referring to the recent acts of atrocity. Surely you'd be distancing yourselves quite a bit?

fustybritches · 09/02/2015 07:26

Good for them, this is how one makes their point to the government in a civilised society.

I don't see why they think non-Muslims should have to obey muslim laws, but I do support their right to protest in this way.

Bakeoffcakes · 09/02/2015 07:38

This x 100

Chipstick10 · 09/02/2015 09:39

Nice to see they have got their priorities right. Demonstrating over a cartoon. Demonstrating re Charlie Hebdo ( Paris right? ) and what they did in the name of their prophet, not what Isis have done in the name of Islam. Goodness me.
