TinsellyRhino - they don't spend all of their sentence in insolation. They are only removed to a segretation wing IF they are at danger or others are in danger because of their behaviour.

Furball · 01/12/2006 18:05

doesn't the mother now post here?

hulababy · 01/12/2006 18:06

She did post at one time I think. No idea if still posting.

saggarmakersbottomknocker · 01/12/2006 18:08

This local guy was let out without interview - the family of his latest victims aren't very happy

That said the probation service haven't come out of it very well either.

WonderCod · 01/12/2006 18:09

its a huigely risky business
who knwos what peopel will do
i like the idea that we are suupoosed to eb abel to tellt he future

saggarmakersbottomknocker · 01/12/2006 18:16

I don't think anyone is expecting others to tell the future Cod but in the case locally, serving just over 3 years for a violent manslaughter is pretty crap don't you think? And then to commit a murder, sorry 4 murders in a place where the probation service says you shouldn't even be adds insult to injury.

hulababy · 01/12/2006 18:20

The "no interview" bit isn't important IMO ad IME. It is the rest of the paper work, research and the final dossier that is the crucuial aspect of it. TBH the interview is more for letting the prisoners say why they think they should be given parole and can often help a prisoner's case for parole, rather than hinder it.

However, unfortunately the prison service do ahve tof ollow guidelines and if that prisoner had been found suitable for release from his previous sentence to such an extent to recommend parole, what more can the parole board and probabtion do? They have to follow the rules or they get solicitor's letters about equal rights, civil liberties, etc. It has to be done properly.

Sadly, this means that yes, errors may happen. I don't know this case, but there must have been very valid reasons for him being released at that time.

Whooooosh · 01/12/2006 18:23

I don't think you need to be able to tell the future when you look at the past.....frequently repeats itself.
Oh and I know all the arguments of those wrongly convicted but the bath case guy should NEVER even be considered for parole in my view.

saggarmakersbottomknocker · 01/12/2006 18:28

Of course Hula I accept that - but wonder whether with prisons being so full that they are under pressure to release earlier.

And part of this guy's probation order was that he wasn't to live in that particular town. But he was - at his mother's home I believe. What's the point of the licence if no-one is going to ensure that they stick to the terms?

edam · 01/12/2006 18:31

I thought lifers always did appear in person before parole boards?

OP posts:
saggarmakersbottomknocker · 01/12/2006 18:38

From 1 April 2004, due to budget constraints, prisoners are no longer interviewed by a Parole Board member automatically as part of the parole process. An interview will only take place in cases where the Board considers it necessary to seek additional information before reaching a final decision. If an interview is required it will take place 7 weeks before PED.

This is from the parole board website edam - I can't find a specific reference to whether lifers have to appear in person.

edam · 01/12/2006 23:25

Oh, only I saw a documentary about the parole board recently and it said lifers have to appear. Maybe rules have changed since it was filmed. Prog. followed four prisoners through the whole process of applying for parole - IIRC three of them got parole and one got a move to an open prison (so parole next time he applies if he does OK in open). Looked like a very thorough process.

Hi Shhh was thinking about you on friday, such positive things were said about your family, esp your dd, and how her testimony helped the whole case

I hope you have a lovely christmas xxx

hulababy · 03/12/2006 18:33

I am glad you have some justice, although I guess nothing can really ever be another for what he did.

IME the process is pretty thorough. Same goes for determining cat D/open status as well.

License conditions are for probation to keep a check on. I don't know anything about outside probation.

ChristmasTreeIsUp · 03/12/2006 18:37

SHhhh. Wishing you and your family the best for the future and hope you can move on with your lives.

persephonesnape · 03/12/2006 23:55

i know it may mean very little, but I wanted to add my comments, especially to SHhhh. everyone i have spoken to about this, those who have and who haven't got children were absolutely shocked by what happened. I'm not one for big internetty gushings of empathy, when i cannot begin to imagine what your family has been through, but I would like you to know that you and your family are very much in my thoughts. hope you have a peaceful, beautiful family christmas and beyond.
