Little boy has been removed from hospital by his parents

He is very sick, needs constant treatment. His parents have taken him to France.

I don't understand why the hospital didn't notice or alert the police for 6 hours.

The police won't comment on the parents being Jehovah's Witnesses.

It sounds wrong when the statement said he was removed without consent. The child is theirs, should be allowed to be in charge of him, but of course it is he that will lose his life if not cared for and that isn't in his best interests necessarily.

I hope he is found and can be cured.

winner it was a sky news phone interview with the Czech Dr.

Hopefully they will post it on their website later on today.

Thanks cupofsneeze.

I have two DC under the care of our local hospital for two different conditions. It scares the shit out of me to think something like this could happen to loving parents just looking out for their child.

It is breaking my heart to think of that poor child on his own in the hospital. I know that if it were one of mine, the only word they would be uttering is 'Mummy'. How can they keep the parents away? I hope the Spanish judge at least grants bail and access to their child, even if he cannot stop the proceedings today.

Hampshire police and crime commissioner has just said on a Sky news that the best thing that could happen is for Aysha to be returned to Southampton as quickly as possible so he can receive his treatment

Since when did a Police Commissioner become expert in what's best for paediatric oncology patients?

I can see why parents felt they needed to flee how would they ever have been able to get their very reasonable case for alternative treatment across when they were surrounded by such prejudice and ignorance

On the R5 phone in this morning one caller said they had been in a similarvsituation had done their own research and paid for their own proton b therapy, having been told by the NHS that no further treatment was available. Afterwards the doctor admitted that proton b was actually effective but he didn't want to mention it to the patient as he wasn't sure whether the patient could afford it.

I find that utterly immoral. When someone has received a devastating diagnosis the last thing they should have to do is start researching their own treatment and fighting for it, while their doctors omit to tell them that alternative effective treatments are available - if you can afford them.

so we have hospital consultants basing their clinical advice on their judgement of our personal wealth?

Something is very wrong with this system

I can't believe this! The hospital and police appear to have made a huge mistake. How can they punish the child by taking away his parents?! Hmm

GimmeMySquash · 01/09/2014 13:07

The Spanish Dr's have allowed the oldest DB to see Ashya this afernoon, about time too.

cupofsneeze · 01/09/2014 13:11

If Ashya is now a ward of court does that mean his parents have lost control of his treatment plan now and the Drs/state choose?

DuelingFanjo · 01/09/2014 13:14

"No it wasn't- the mother wanted to stop all conventional treatment and go down the alternative route. Proton beam treatment is conventional treatment"

no

she was seeking proton beam treatment for her son.
This family wanted to stop the post-op radiation treatment and get proton beam treatment abroad just like Neon's mother did.

BlackSwan · 01/09/2014 13:16

It's a horrific situation. Ultimately this all comes down to money. The NHS budget for sending paediatric patients overseas for proton beam therapy is limited. Doctors will not tell parents about it unless they are likely to be approved. The NHS oncologist's approach has backfired. Members of the public, over the course of this weekend, have become more aware of proton. Now everyone with a child with a brain tumour who needs radiation treatment will want it. Currently only those children who are likely to be cured by the treatment are sent. The rest get conventional radiation here in the UK. When the UK gets its own proton machines come 2018 (believe it when I see it), you can bet that the criteria for proton approval will be far broader.

CharlieSierra · 01/09/2014 13:24

The police and crime commissioner sounded very plausible, speaking of the high court and the cps acting in full possession of all the facts and evidence, which we don't have. However I'm still totally confused about phrases like 'the treatment he needs' and 'to save his life' when other reports say he's terminal and the hospital can't do any more for him. It can't be both, surely? I'm finding this really bizarre, they've found them, now they just need to communicate properly and sort things out so parents and child can be together.

WetAugust · 01/09/2014 13:24

there are some commentaries in the main Press that are truly scathing about the way the Police and NHS are handling this. They are saying thing like the Police is now the enforcement arm of the NHS. And that's in a traditionally left wing paper

if a genuinely caring, coherent and capable mother and father can find themselves in a prison cell 300 miles away from their terminally ill son one can only imagine how the law and social services rides roughshod over less capable parents.

I have been threatened by an NHS consultant who refused to admit he had misdiagnosed my son. I experienced frustration incredulity panic and profound fear when that doctor threatened to take my son away because I dared to challenge his diagnosis. His fellow professionals knew he had made a misdiagnosis but did not seek to get it overturned That was left to me to do. So I have a lot of empathy for this family as I have seen first hand the terrible situation that challenging a doctor can place you in and my child was not terminally ill. I cannot begin to imagine how the parents are finding the strength to deal with this unnecessary abuse and persecution while losing this precious time with their son.

Nothing they may have fine deserves the way they are being treated. NOTHING.

Madrid extradition hearing adjourned until tomorrow. Parents will remain in police custody overnight

That's the latest from Sky

I cannot believe they are keeping his parent's in custody and not allowing them to be with their child! The poor little boy, it's barbaric.

AFewFallenLeaves · 01/09/2014 13:34

Yes the contrast with Rotherham!

I totally understand this being the case, but they wanted to pay themselves, so there shouldn't be a problem with that, absolutely no need to get heavy and insist on the conventional route.

I know children who have forms of cancer not currently curable who have had proton beam therapy paid for by the NHS.

Hakluyt · 01/09/2014 13:45

I thought you were only extradited from a country if you were going to stand trial in the country you are being extradited to? Or am I wrong about that?

WetAugust · 01/09/2014 13:46

David Cameron's spokesman has said that Dave shares our concern.

Sorry Dave - you're bhind the curve. It outright bloody anger we are feeling now.

Eldest brother has jus told R4 that he is not allowed to talk to his parents.

BlackSwan · 01/09/2014 13:47

That's interesting rainbowinmyroom, they are lucky indeed. CharlieSierra, I totally agree with you, if they wanted to self fund, they should have been supported. The consultant here has come off as a completely arrogant bully.

Dear X,

I am writing to you as my MP to express my disgust at the treatment of the King family. As you know, the parents of Ashya King have been pursued to Spain, where they were arrested and are now appearing in court for extradition. The family have done nothing wrong, they were simply seeking the best treatment they could for their son.

The current situation, where Ashya is alone in hospital and his parents are not allowed to visit him, is the cruellest of all, and can be in the interests of no one. Please bring any pressure to bear that you may, to stop the authorities pursuing this matter, and to allow the family the freedom to find alternative treatments.

I know that the King family is not in your constituency, but I think the issues of state control and parental choice are ones that should involve all of us.

Feel free to amend the above template.

rainbowinmyroom · 01/09/2014 13:50

One of them, her mother found herself in a similar situation to this couple. The child was eventually treated in the US. Although the cancer is so far not known to be curable, the child is still alive over 2.5 years following treatment.

GimmeMySquash · 01/09/2014 13:54

Ashya and his family are fortunate he is the youngest child and they started having children young. The older siblings deserve medals, holding the family together.

I hope the LA don't go fining the family for the children being out of school later in the week.
