Diabetic David Clapson, 59, died with just £3.44 left in his account after his Jobseeker’s Allowance was axed because he missed an appointment

David once faced death on a daily basis as he served his country loyally in the terror hell of Northern Ireland.

And when he left the Army he went straight into the workplace with BT before becoming a full-time carer for his sick mother.

After she went into a home, diabetic David turned to the state for help while he looked for work.

But under the Coalition’s callous new benefits rules he had his £71.70 a week Jobseeker’s Allowance axed – merely because he missed an appointment with an adviser.

Stripped of his income, the 59-year-old could not afford food or electricity and died starving, penniless and alone at his home.

His death was from diabetic ketoacidosis – caused by not taking his insulin.

When David died he had just £3.44 to his name, six tea bags, a tin of soup and an out-of-date can of sardines. His electricity card was out of credit meaning the fridge where he should have kept his insulin chilled was not working.

A coroner also found he had no food in his stomach.

A pile of CVs for job applications were found near David’s body.

Terror hell Northern Ireland.....meh

NickiFury · 29/07/2014 12:45

What do you know about Ronald? Serious question.

ParsingFlatly · 29/07/2014 12:46

Many thanks, dawn.

NickiFury · 29/07/2014 12:46

what do you know about IT

MorphineDreams · 29/07/2014 12:50

Absolutely disgusting.

basgetti · 29/07/2014 12:52

This poor man couldn't even afford to keep his insulin chilled for fuck's sake. Absolutely heartbreaking.

ParsingFlatly · 29/07/2014 12:54

Tortoise, agree completely.

Ditto, if you've always had access to work or income, you know you have the welfare state as a safety net in the unlikely event of work & income failing.

If you are unlucky enough to live on the welfare state (because of illness or unemployment), there is no safety net for when that fails.

Social Fund loans used to provide a patchy "safety net below the safety net". But those have just been scrapped.

DoctorTwo · 29/07/2014 13:01

IDS used the argument "I'm proud my policies are getting people off benefits" when pushed about those who'd died after being denied benefits on Question Time. The horrible, slimy, lying vicious shitebag. He couldn't lie straight in bed.

Wonc · 29/07/2014 13:10

Rest in peace David.

RonaldMcDonald · 29/07/2014 13:13

Firstly didn't this happen last year? I'm sure I've seen this before.

Served his country loyally ( for 2 yrs ) in the terror hell of Northern Ireland....that is some of the best journalism I have ever experienced
Over 40 years ago...

Since then he was a
BT worker
A carer
A diabetic

However his two years of service in the 'terror hell of NI' are the important bit.

I am more disgusted that this happened to a man who cared for his ill mother whilst ill himself. I'm concerned that a insulin dependent diabetic could have his benefits stopped without huge reason
That must be changed to protect vulnerable people and prevent this from happening again

I hate that we now try to place service people above all others so that their deaths are seen as more important than the death of a civilian.
I am sorry that this man died but his having been a soldier does not make me more sorry or make his story worse or more worthy.
I also think they should make people more aware of hardship funds which are available to all in situations like this.

NickiFury · 29/07/2014 13:45

You make some valid points, not sure why you couldn't just say that in the first place rather than bitch plopping on the thread.

Personally, I don't think anyone gives too much of a crap about these vulnerable people and if ramping up a service history to grab some attention gets us talking about it, that's fine by me.

ilovechristmas1 · 29/07/2014 13:58

firstchoice why is your ESA coming to an end,are you on contribution based and on wrag

ESA support group does not have a time limit regardless of contribution or income related

if you are a single parent another benefit should take over from your ESA

hope you get it sorted, money expert benefit forum is also good for advice if thats what your looking for Thanks

RonaldMcDonald · 29/07/2014 14:02

Bitch plopping? What a literally and figuratively strange thing to say.
Thanks for explaining your posts though....

I think that that's a rather rude and utterly unhelpful summation tbh. As ever I am grateful for your incisive contribution

basgetti · 29/07/2014 14:03

I understand your point Ronald, but I think emphasising him being a soldier is actually quite good journalism, because it has made those who wouldn't normally care about benefit claimants take notice.

ParsingFlatly · 29/07/2014 14:06

Ronald, I thought you were just bitchplopping too. Your second post was much more informative and helpful.

Nicki, agree. Revoltingly, passing the Daily Mail test does actually make a difference to how he will be perceived. Whereas what Ronald says ought to be enough.

NickiFury · 29/07/2014 14:12

ronald you're MORE than welcome Smile.

Timetoask · 29/07/2014 14:12

This story has made me feel so incredibly sad.

I don't care if David was an ex soldier or not, it is simply sad to know that a man died alone with not a soul to turn to for some help.

In poorer countries we have many problems, but at least we have strong family ties and people are not left to die on their own.

ParsingFlatly · 29/07/2014 14:16

ilovechristmas, non-contribution based ESA now only lasts 12 months, unless you are in the Support Group.

So if you're waiting for an operation and it gets postponed, you're screwed. If you have children you might be eligible for child-related benefits. If you don't, that's it, no subsistence income.

CSIJanner · 29/07/2014 14:45

What a disgusting state or our nation to be in. Letting down those who not only need it the most, but had given the most as well. RIP David

RonaldMcDonald · 29/07/2014 15:23

This is a year old story, isn't it? Who unearthed it and why?

Thankfully I have never heard the term bitchplopping
Perhaps my circles are too small?
What does it mean?

Do you mean shitting all over the thread?
Why do you feel the need to feminise that?
Why not say, 'that seems like an unhelpful comment' or 'that seems negative'?
Bitchplopping.....excellent, a new MN high point

Still 'terror hell' NI....meh....crap journalism
Ex service people fallen or hard times vs ex anyone else fallen on hard times...meh...crap judgement calls and the perpetuation thereof

All people are equal to me. Simply having been a soldier at one point or another does not mean anything to the govt or to me.
'Person treated appallingly again' should be the point. This govt is winning whilst it is pitting people against each other and getting us to rank who is more worthy and who is a shirker or had their misfortune coming to them
Not good journalism

basgetti · 29/07/2014 15:28

I think the story has been resurrected due to the inquest and it's findings.

NickiFury · 29/07/2014 15:38

Well I didn't hear about it a year ago. I am glad I am hearing about it now. I think the age of this story is utterly irrelevant. Not sure why you keep mentioning it. Do you feel it reduces the importance that this happening here in the UK?

I agree that emphasising the ex forces angle opens this situation to a wider audience who might not otherwise give hoot, given the current negative attitudes towards benefits claimants. Positioning him him as a hard worker, ex serviceman etc side steps those negative assumptions and subsequent dismissal of this as being worth any consideration.

"person treated appallingly" should be the point but it isn't. No one cares. YOUR attitude towards this seems very dismissive, you seem to be looking for reasons not to be bothered.

guess we will just have to agree to disagree autistic man starves to death after benefits cut

Is the above situation worth addressing? seeing as it happened only five months ago so more current.

NickiFury · 29/07/2014 15:40

working link

RonaldMcDonald · 29/07/2014 16:02

No but tbh asking why this isn't getting more attention etc seems odd
It is a year old news story it got attention at the time...why not unearth over and over any news story and be repeatedly appalled....

I fail to see where I have been dismissive over anything in this thread other than ridiculous terminology and crap journalism.

I really don't give a shit that ~Mr Clapson ever worked or was looking for work. Again it is asking us to have empathy - because
