Is the most awful thing, and makes me so angry, and also I wish I could walk into the tv and take one of the babies nad llok after it, but all I ca od si sit there feeling appalled and feel helpless to do anything, is hellish the condition of these children and the babies are all lovel yand fresh although one was starving then you seen them disingrate, staritn to be disturbed, the older babies cannot sit up the ones who can rock back and forth and they end up disabled physically and mental and then they ahd 2 18 year old who had lost the will to live after a life like that ..waiting to die. heartbreaking especially as I would adopt one but my dh smokes sometimes gets depresses, we have a low income and are uni etc, but I could still offer a baby like that a better life than they ahve at the moment just wish I could do something

I didn't see the report but remember the scandal of Romanian 'orphanages' being exposed back in 1990 (?) after the Ceaucescus were assassinated. What God-awful places they were. Sounds like not a lot has changed then.

JennyLee · 04/09/2006 14:23

they closed the old ones but then the hopitals they used instead became the same and so many children are abandoned there and the people who helped the journalist have been arrested it said. some of the disabled and mentally ill kids were tied up and when the woman untied them for the cameras they were confused and kept going to her to be tied again it was awful the most awful thing was a pristine newborn baby plump and healthy and swaddled in a blue blanket sleeping on a bed , with a future like that ahead of it

tied up?????

Good God.Things like this make you want to curl up and die really.

JennyLee · 04/09/2006 18:31

the reporter was on LKToday this morning, very harrowing, and yes I wish i could adopt one them. I watched a report of a room makeover show and they did up a nursery in romania i think and it was awful to watch (infact come to think of it you didn't get to see much of the kids) and apparently the reporter was threatened not to do the report. They don't allow international adoptions atm otherwise i would seriously look into it

JennyLee · 04/09/2006 18:38

I know, it is seriously frustrating

and to think they will be a member of the EU next year!

alexa1 · 04/09/2006 18:56

Just saw it on the news. How awful, it brought tears to my eyes. I Just wanted to bring all those kids home and look after them. How awful that they tie them up.

its the baby in the blue swaddling that gets me, and the brown ones sucking an empty bottle and rocking back and forth, they look like my ds

Maybe if they join the EU more will be done for the children, so that might be a good thing for them as surely the european parliament can't have that in one of its member countries

This has been going on for years and years in romania. It's an awful place.

bubble99 · 04/09/2006 19:06

And hopefully international adoptions will be allowed, as well.

Beetroot · 04/09/2006 19:07

Mu mum works in Romania with children and adults alike. She is constantly shocked by the way they are treated. She works in a hospital for people with mental health problems. The adults are drugged to the eyeballs, in the p.j's all day. No fresh food. Mu mum trains people to work with the patients, to give them quality of life. She trains people working with kids as well.

JennyLee · 04/09/2006 19:08

your Mum sounds like an inspiring person

OP posts:
Beetroot · 04/09/2006 19:09

yes she is. she spends at least 2 months a year over there. Alot of her work is to do with Play...teaching carers to play and be creative

alexa1 · 04/09/2006 19:16

Good on your mum. There should be more people like her around.

bubble99 · 04/09/2006 19:22

Beetroot. What a lovely mum you have.

Why is there a ban on international adoptions, BTW? Does anyone know? Is it an attempt to 'save face' for the government?

i think the reason they stopped international adoptions was so that paedaphiles couldnt have access to them as parents are prepared to sell their children abroad for cash. horrific, i know,i felt sick after watching it.

lucy5 · 04/09/2006 20:48

Pre dd I used to volunteer in Romania and it doesn't sound like much has changed. It's sickening.

alexa1 · 04/09/2006 20:51

That is worrying that paedophiles could have access to these vulnerable children. I can't see any way out for them.

lucy5 · 04/09/2006 21:21

Unfortunately they often volunteer too

ruty · 05/09/2006 09:10

I've been to Romania. When you see the poverty and desperation in the general society it gives you little hope that the most vulnerable can ever be protected. It is a truly hellish place, IMO, although I met some very nice people and some parts of the country are beautiful. But the despair is endemic. And the neglectful care in these homes is not confined to Romania either. They still have caged beds in Czech Republic for mentally and physically handicapped children, and for the elderly, and other parts of Eastern Europe too -though probably the level of care does not descend to the horrors found in Romania. JK Rowling campaigns for better standards of care, but I'm shocked that the EU is even contemplating Romania joining yet. I know the idea is that it should push the govt to improve things, but I think it just makes things go more underground. The idea paedophiles may have more access to these vulnerable children makes me feel sick.
