gang raped and hung from a tree- Boycott India as a holiday destination

I know there is a thread about this but 'girls raped and murdered' is not the same.

I can't believe there isn't more response on MN about this horror.

A 14 and 15 year old whose father, from the sound of it, was mocked by police and locals when he wanted help to find his daughter. Absolutely disgusting.

Yet westerners happily tootle off to admire the sights and lounge on the beaches when this is what is going on in the background.

If we all boycotted the tourist destinations in India and hit their pockets they might actually do something about it.

Completely agree!!

AnyaKnowIt · 30/05/2014 20:08

Don't you think we should sort out the UK before starting to tell other counties what to do?

doziedoozie · 30/05/2014 20:08

I've been home today and listening to the radio and each time this story has come on I've felt more and more sickened, the girls were lower caste so it doesn't seem to matter how horrific their deaths were - or that they were killed!

Just awful.

Oh yeah, all those gang rapes and forced hangings of teenage girls in errr, where exactly.

I agree OP .. and the pregnant woman in Pakistan who was stoned to death by her own family .. there are no words..

teaandthorazine · 30/05/2014 20:21

Don't you think we should sort out the UK before starting to tell other counties what to do?

Hands down the most idiotic thing I've read on here for a long time.

BeyondBurma · 30/05/2014 20:22

I hardly think that it is the same in this country Anya.

I wouldn't want to be a woman living in Pakistan, India or Afghanistan under any circumstances I really wouldn't.

This story is horrendous, similar to that poor girl on the bus Sad. I'm hoping that the government there will try and do more in the light of the international outrage following these stories.

Having spent a number of months in India though I suspect trying to change the culture will be an awful lot harder Sad.

AnyaKnowIt · 30/05/2014 20:22

Well, 2 women a week are killed by their partner and a 6% conviction ratefor rape. The UK isn't exactly a leading example of women's safety isit?

BeyondBurma · 30/05/2014 20:26

Of course that is awful but I would like to think that I wouldn't be able to be stoned to death by my family in front of a court in this country or that the police wouldn't bother with my families' call for help with their missing daughter for over 12 hours Hmm?

EyelinerQueen · 30/05/2014 20:34

I see your point OP.

I made a conscious decision years ago not to travel to any country where women are treated as inferior citizens. Now that I am the mother of a daughter I feel even more strongly about it.

It's not much of a protest but it's something.

passmethewineplease · 30/05/2014 20:36

It's a dreadful story and all to familiar lately.

It's just fucking awful.

doziedoozie · 30/05/2014 21:05

After the gang rape of the student on the bus in Delhi friends were going off to India on holiday.

It seemed a bit off, and, of course, they were a bit concerned about safety, but it's less likely to happen to rich westerners because then the police would be obliged to actually do something.

Sad to say it probably is!

The story of the woman giving birth in chains in a jail in Sudan and awaiting a death sentence for marrying a Christian sickened me today as well.

I used to do business with many countries with very poor human rights records and I tell every business person doing business and every tourist visiting these countries to think very hard whether they expect to be treated any better themselves.

There are no human rights in these countries.

elQuintoConyo · 30/05/2014 21:14

It's highly unlikely I will ever get to India, but support those who can afford it to go somewhere else.

Perhaps I can stop eating curries and shopping in Primark, etc.

Mynewone · 30/05/2014 21:19

Agree OP. The story was heartbreaking and shocking how can this be happening in 2014? It does not make sense

SueDNim · 30/05/2014 21:23

It was horrific, but do many people go to India as a tourist destination from the UK? And are they likely to be in the MN demographic?

BeyondBurma · 30/05/2014 21:24

Yes I would say so. I've been twice and think I'm a fairly typical MNetter.

AnyaKnowIt · 30/05/2014 21:27

But then why just single out India?

What about south Africa?

MrsCakesPremonition · 30/05/2014 21:31

Western tourists aren't necessarily safer, it seems that simply being female makes you a target.

No, not when compared with Nordic countries

doziedoozie · 30/05/2014 21:41

But then why just single out India?

Because it was in the news today!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Stop nitpicking -isn't it horrific enough for you?

OP posts:
AnyaKnowIt · 30/05/2014 21:44

Because its just not confined to India is it?

doziedoozie · 30/05/2014 21:44

Nordic countries are tiddly (on a global scale) rich countries.
On a global scale the UK is safe.

OP posts:
doziedoozie · 30/05/2014 21:45

India has a caste system, I can't think of another which has one.
