Just heard on the news that a female teacher has been stabbed to death by a 15 yr old student. This has made me go so cold. That poor woman.

Poor teacher (and her family) and poor pupils who had nothing to do with the incident. It reminds me of the murder of Phillip Lawerence in 1995.

It is absolutely shocking but I wonder how close to trouble this child had already flown and how many the exceptions had been made to keep him in mainstream school already.

My heart goes out to the family of the teacher who has been murdered.

When our DD was at a top Church Comp there were a handful of girls with complex behavioural problems for whom excuse after excuse was made and with whom the school simply could not cope. They should not have been in a mainstream school and strong leadership would have ensured they would not have remained there.

It is awfully sad and it is a symptom of an excuse based system that seeks to keep down costs by making inadequate provision for those who should not be educated in the mainstream. Head teachers need the power to permanently exclude quickly and should not be stripped of resources for doing so. That presupposes that all Head teachers have a clear idea of what good behaviour looks like and are prepared to support the majority who wish to learn in a safe and appropriate environment.

I mentioned on the 'chat' thread that I hoped enough police/CSOs would be around to stop the press approaching pupils at the end of the school day. But I've just seen such interviews on SKY.

Police expected to make a further statement soon.

How horrible if there were students watching it, poor kids, and their exams due soon too.

The reason the school stayed open will be because they will want to provide counsellors and support for children and staff, some of whom will have witnessed this terrible incident. You can't just send the children home in these circumstances. School has a duty of care, if parents ask to remove their children and come and collect them that is their decision but school cannot just close like that. Lessons will probably not have continued in the same way, but children will at least have the opportunity to talk through with trained staff.

I remember when a close colleague of me was critically injured by a client of ours (she worked in immigration as a solicitor, not exactly high risk) and it was horrible having to try and act normal (it didn't work) knowing we all could've been there, if it had been the client we were seeing, if we'd taken the job instead and so on. The teachers who had had/would have had that pupil that day must be thinking what if it had been next lesson/the lesson before, why was it her specifically and so on. I can't imagine sending my DC to school and then them coming home possibly having witnessed someone be killed.

Terrible news. You don't expect to go to work and be killed by someone who you're trying to help. Kids and teachers should be safe in schools.

Some years ago at a local school a 16yo stabbed another kid in the classroom. Badly but I don't think they died.

Its thankfully very rare in this country but in America you hear of schools having metal detectors and security guards.

I just saw the person who named him on twitter started a FB page too Sad. If it is who it is being said it is, then he was ready to do is GCSE's next week and was an EMO. Makes you wonder what his life was like.

So sad for everyone involved.
