Very interesting thread ... thanks to Goldie for sharing your in-depth knowledge and giving us your slant on all the scenarios suggested.

My musings just now were ...

It seems to be said that if the plane went along the 'northern corridor' route there is the slim possibility it has somehow landed, although very unlikely.

If I follow correctly, it is thought that if it went along the 'southern corridor' route it for 7 hours it most likely ran out of fuel and crashed into the sea.

My question is: Are there any land-masses big (and flat) enough, like on an uninhabited island for example, where a runway could surreptitiously be built? I mean along this 'southern corridor', or is it just a vast expanse of ocean?

PublicEnemyNumeroUno · 15/03/2014 22:41

Daily Mail, what a load of shite.

Nancery · 15/03/2014 22:43

Long time lurker here.

What about Western China? It was heading north west. It isn't going to just ditch in the ocean as a suicide mission because why the several hours of flying and meticulous planning of disabling contact systems etc for that so must have been aiming for land. Anywhere close to India and military radar would spot it in a second, as would turning back eastwards. Only area it could pass over without detection is the Burma border area and this leads directly to the disputed Xinjiang region of China, which is also bang on the line where they said they are going to search, and also the number of Chinese passengers, I'm thinking Uighur terrorists have hijacked it and are using it/tried to use it for political negotiations/promotion.

Nancery · 15/03/2014 22:44

And yes, Daily Mail IS definitely a load of shite!!

SantanaLopez · 15/03/2014 22:49

NY Times on lithium batteries.

Investigators also are looking at the possibility that a shipment of lithium batteries in the cargo hold may have caught fire and felled the aircraft. A senior American official who had been briefed on the contents listed on the plane’s cargo manifest said a “significant load” of lithium batteries had been aboard — raising suspicions because of previous cargo-plane crashes attributed to lithium battery shipments, which can overheat and cause intense fires. But that possibility is inconsistent with information that the plane may have kept flying for hours after it vanished.

I'm thinking Uighur terrorists have hijacked it and are using it/tried to use it for political negotiations/promotion
Everything points to someone being very, very clever and certainly well trained though. Uighur terrorists have never (afaik) reached this height of activity, or anything like it.

lessonsintightropes · 15/03/2014 22:52

Why do people keep posting full stops?

Nancery · 15/03/2014 22:55

Agree but struggling to think of another theory! It is a step up from running amok in a train station though, I grant you...

McPheezingMyButtOff · 15/03/2014 22:55

Because they have failed to realise they can just follow the thread Confused

wineforthelady · 15/03/2014 22:57

PandaFeet · 15/03/2014 22:59

And another person on the PPrune thread has hinted that rising to even 40000ft would disable passengers and crew.

Sorry, I forget who asked about the altitude and if it would have an effect on those on board.

meditrina · 15/03/2014 23:01

"My question is: Are there any land-masses big (and flat) enough, like on an uninhabited island for example, where a runway could surreptitiously be built? I mean along this 'southern corridor', or is it just a vast expanse of ocean?"

A big enough and strong enough runway would be pretty conspicuous to build, and the need to transport everything to the uninhibited island would be a logistic challenge. And how would you ship in aircraft fuel for onwards flights?

Surreptitious repair/reinforcement of a previously abandoned airfield in a sparely populated area would be more plausible, but still difficult to do covertly.

livingzuid · 15/03/2014 23:08

Geez DM that's a helluva leap to make Confused

Nancery · 15/03/2014 23:12

DM, gotta love it!!

It's up there with Sky News for ridiculousness

VivaLeBeaver · 15/03/2014 23:19

I just can't believe that radar in countries such as India or china didnt see it if it went over their air space.

Cretaceous · 15/03/2014 23:24

Besides all that political fanatic stuff in the DM, it would make most sense that it was one of the pilots acting alone in a (very long) moment of madness. Sad He just disabled the other pilot, turned off the flight path, and the plane eventually ditched in the sea miles from anywhere. All the other ideas are just so far fetched and complicated. If it had been hijackers/terrorist, then surely it would have been claimed by someone. If it had headed for India or China, it would have been found.

PilgrimSoul · 15/03/2014 23:32

There is definitely more that the Authorities know than we are privy to. I hope negotiations are ongoing in the background. In any case the geopolitical ramifications of this are enormous.

TheHoneyBadger · 15/03/2014 23:35

what do you think those ramifications are then pilgrim?

NeverTalksToStrangers · 15/03/2014 23:38

Breaking news on mirror about islamist terror link. I read this story a few days ago on some other website though. Possibly American. This mystery has been my obsession this week.

NeverTalksToStrangers · 15/03/2014 23:39

Hmmm it appears to have gone now. That's about the 5th time this week that has happened.

NeverTalksToStrangers · 15/03/2014 23:44

Found it.

11:20PMThe Telegraph reports that the supergrass said he metthe Malaysians – one of whom was a pilot – in Afghanistan. He said he had given them the explosive device to use to take control of an aircraft.11:16PMBREAKING:Claims have emerged of a plot by Malaysian Islamists to hijack a passenger jet in a 9/11-style attack. The Telegraph reports that an al-Qaeda informant told a court last week that a group of Malaysian men had planned to seize an aircraft by blasting open the cockpit door with a shoe bomb. The paper reports that security experts are treating the evidence from a convicted British terrorist as “credible”.

lessonsintightropes · 15/03/2014 23:44

This is tiresome. This is the Mirror story, very similar to what the Fail published, which I also posted to upthread.

Anwar Ibrahim is the jailed leader of the Malaysian opposition, and an internationally renowned speaker on democracy, freedom and human rights. He is not a terrorist. Have a google about the existing Malaysian regime before jumping to conclusions and right wing tabloid headlines maybe - sorry if that sounds a bit terse, I don't mean to be, but these papers aren't doing the international reputation of UK journalism any good.

If it's a case of the pilot becoming unhinged and ditching the plane as a result of secret 'Islamic fundamentalism' on the part of Anwar Ibrahim I will personally eat my hat, promise.

livingzuid · 15/03/2014 23:48

Malaysia has faced huge criticism time and time again for vote rigging, present govt holding onto power, becoming increasingly fundamentalist etc. My family have lived around the area for decades and it's just getting worse from what I'm told. I'd be incredibly surprised too if it was anything to do with Ibrahim. All the negatives about him are government generated propaganda.
