It's so sad. They still haven't found anything, but thinks it's crashed into the sea.

For anyone that hasn't heard

I must say I'm a bit suspicious of the path via the waypoints that MH370 is supposed to have taken.

I wonder whether the algorithms at Inmarsat are fitting noise and/or using error-correcting codes which are in effect determined to assume the signal from MH370 is somewhere in the haze of data.

Still think there's a good chance this Kiwi guy saw it come down.

Sky Breaking News

A Malaysian government official says investigators have concluded the missing jet was hijacked and steered off-course.

AnyaKnowIt · 15/03/2014 04:09

Oh no

hellokittymania · 15/03/2014 04:10

:(

NancyinCali · 15/03/2014 04:32

Just came on this thread to link to an article about the latest news but see several have already posted it. If it turns out to be the case that it really was hijacked, the next question is of course: why? And it still doesn't answer where it is. So awful for all those families waiting Sad.

OutragedFromLeeds · 15/03/2014 04:36

If it was hijacked it seems odd that they let it crash into the sea and odd that no-one has taken responsibility for it.

hellokittymania · 15/03/2014 05:13

There will be a press conference at 1:30, less than 30 minutes away.

LoopyDoopyDoo · 15/03/2014 05:16

now

Didn't watch the channel 5 thing but wanted to say it's only the cockpit voice recorder (CVR) that is limited to 5 hours. The actual flight data recorder is more like 24 hours.

Press conference about to start.

meditrina · 15/03/2014 05:59

It's the PM who will speak (and not take questions), ministerial press conference in a while.

honeycrest · 15/03/2014 06:05

It hasn't been confirmed that it's been hijacked yet. Press conference was supposed to start half an hour ago but it's delayed, supposedly due to tight security.

meditrina · 15/03/2014 06:09

Still waiting.

The PM is meeting the families before speaking to the press.

No-one knows what he is likely to say. Is it going to be a 'one week on' conference (for this has been scheduled for a while, before the AP story).

Waiting press agog because of the AP story, but sourced to one Malaysian official only. Is this official right, and AP's style of reporting what was said accurate? Or is this going to be another debunking, confirming only that hijack is one of the possibilities?

Minister's press conference (where questions will be taken) in 3.5 hours.

meditrina · 15/03/2014 06:13

Here's the text of the AP story:

"KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) - A Malaysian investigation into the missing flight 370 has concluded that one or more people with flying experience switched off communications devices and deliberately steered the airliner off-course, a Malaysian government official involved in the investigation said Saturday. The official called the disappearance a hijacking, though he said no motive has been established and no demands have been made known. It's not yet clear where the plane ended up, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to brief the media."

Bakingnovice · 15/03/2014 06:30

So they think its a hijack now. But why ? By whom? And where is the plane?!

press conference confirms hijacking.

meditrina · 15/03/2014 06:37

The have concluded that what happened was consistent with deliberate action by someone on the plane. Invetigations continue into backgrounds of those on the plane.

Primary radar data indicating turn back has now been unanimously converted by FAA, AAIB and others (working separately on same data).

Satellite data points to the plane following one of two corridors: northerly, up towards Kazakhstan or southerly towards Indonesia.

Those two possibilities cover a lot of countries as yet uninvolved in the search - they are being briefed and their co-operation sought.
