We don't particularly want another forum thank to be honest.

I think you will find the majority of MNers are happy with the format of MN as it is - even if it is thought of as outdated - and that editable posts aren't wanted or needed.

This is not just about this one forum though.

MarscusGarvey · 10/08/2006 16:02

More than happy with this one thanks!

zippitippitoes · 10/08/2006 16:05

I hate the idea of editable posts more than any other forum "improvement"

It must read like nonsense at times

WigWamBam · 10/08/2006 16:06

I don't want another forum either - this one does it for me. I don't think it's outdated either; it's understated and simple, which suits its fast pace, and most of us like it that way.

This is about much broader issues than just one website though.

Bozza · 10/08/2006 16:14

agree wwb - went on mumsonline as linked from the yorkiegirl thread and was appalled at the layout, tickers etc. Yuk. And to think it was a breakaway from mumsnet.

iwantmymummy · 10/08/2006 16:14

I've only joined today, so don't know much about the wider issues yet.

I'm with you lot all the way!

waves a Mumsnet flag

zippitippitoes · 10/08/2006 16:21

hi then iwantmymummy

you will generally find a degree of conservatism (minimalism)about the site presentation, but not necessarily the posts!

expatinscotland · 10/08/2006 16:38

I like this site set up exactly as it is. The day they bring in 'edit' function, aggressive moderation, tickers, avatars, etc. is the day I go.

hellywobs · 13/08/2006 13:44

I don't see why editable posts are such an awful idea. Firstly you can go back and edit your typos.

And more importantly if you have posted in the heat of the moment you can go back and edit your more "strident" comments out which I think it really important.

And you can post your email address for people to contact you and then edit it out again so that spammers don't get it.

zippitippitoes · 13/08/2006 13:46

you can edit typos before you post and they don't really matter do they?

but if you edit the content then it makes nonsense to othe rpeople reading

if it's a worry that you say the wrong thing then just take time to think before posting is my view

or post again with a backtrack or update

expatinscotland · 13/08/2006 13:54

too right, zippiti. i agree completely.

SoupDragon · 13/08/2006 13:58

Being able to edit posts is ridiculous. It would make threads read like gibberish. Evenmore so than they do already.

We don't need a "new" forum at all. this one is fine and so much clearer than all those avatar, ticker and emoticon infested monstrosities out there.

although I do fondly remember Rickman's "time til my next bowel movment" ticker from when we invaded BabyWorld to stick up for something or other.

GeorginaA · 13/08/2006 14:04

On one of dh's sites I think there's time-limited editing (so within first 10-20 minutes of posting - I forget what the time limit is exactly) which is quite a nice compromise. People then mainly just use it to fix typos, but conversations remain intact.

Personally though, I'm happy enough with no editing.

MarsLady · 13/08/2006 14:07

If you want to edit typos just press preview message. I find that works rather well (though I'm far to lazy to preview when there are other threads to read!)

GeorginaA · 13/08/2006 14:14

Ah - but don't you ever find that even with preview you don't see them? I always spot them the second after I've hit "Post Message"

zippitippitoes · 13/08/2006 14:17

I don't bother about typos unless i'm being pompous and opinionated and using big words

Earlybird · 13/08/2006 14:23

Agree with GeorginaA - I preview, post, and then see what I overlooked once it's impossible to edit. I hate having typos in my posts 'cause I think it makes me look as if I don't know how to spell properly....just one of my quirks.

Agree that editing after posting is not a good idea, IMO. In theory, the permanence of posts might cause people to think more carefully before they post something controversial or inflammatory.

It's a free country or supposedly so. The more avenues for discussion available the better.

I had to give some legal quotes to the media about this thing which must not be talked of. All very interesting.
