I don't even know why I'm posting but I've just seen some of the details in the press and feel so distressed by it. I'm almost hoping this thread goes unnoticed so I can hope to distract myself and not think about it. It's horrific though and I don't think I'll easily get it out of my mind.

Rousette and nicename, thank you so much ThanksThanks.

I think a licence, microchip and a form of insurance for all dogs. One way to enforce it would be for vets to help regulate it. At some point, most dogs need to go to the vet. Some people are silly though and don't take them for a check up, ever and they're only brought it when needing to be put to sleep etc.
It's not fool proof by any means, some will slip through the net, inevitable really. I'm really hoping the government do something. I'd like to think I'm more intelligent than some stereotypical 'dangerous breeds' owners but just working at a vets shows, on a daily basis, the terrifying number if irresponsible owners.

I've said before, it should work like driving licences...compulsory tests before you get one, dog removed and a fine to pay if you own a dog without a licence - that way there's no costs to run it that aren't recouped and only a one off cost to responsible owners.

I love malamutes. I love huskies. Even though I have a garden and live somewhere suitable and my DH runs every day and I really wanted one, we spoke about it and decided we couldn't have that breed. They are incredibly hard to exercise enough, very difficult to train well and have a strong prey drive. I just don't understand why people can't see the work and time and expense that caring for a dog entails. A big working dog even more.

i think there needs to be a government campaign with adverts etc. people need educating on how to keep a pet dog. i think people need to be told that they must keep their dog in a crate / safe area of the home because so many people see this as cruel and think that dogs should have full run of a home. i thought crates were cruel until i educated myself on the subject.

i also think a license would reduce people buying pets on a whim and also there has to be something done about people breeding for a few quid. there are just far too many dogs and the sellers do not do any form of checks on the new owners other than of whats in their wallet.

i agree with a post earlier upthread about a dog already present and the baby comes later. perhaps if there was a licensing body they could also have staff that visit homes and lecture them on the changes they should make to their home before the baby arrives. they could be contacted by midwife team.
