Could there ever be a justifiable reason for this?

Someone upthread is asking us to believe that children were removed because of "ink on willies" - more and more ludicrous

That was actually a true case very near where I work a few years after I qualified. The ss team were condemned harshly by the judge who returned the children as were the other professionals involved and the family recived a substantial amount in compensation as well as the dept having further training put in place to try and prevent future occurrences.

your starting to sound like you don't belive mistakes ever happen if that's the case your just as deluded as the ones who belive its a conspiracy to snatch kids.

Nananina As it happened pre-internet days, this is the only report I can find on the internet - this report is not complete but gives some of the story. Sock's post gives the rest of the story.

www.lgcplus.com/suspicion-of-child-abuse-washed-away-in-the-bath/1618672.article

IneedAsockamnesty · 02/12/2013 19:53

And yes it was wellies as in plastic boots

WhatAgain · 02/12/2013 20:01

I've just realised that the one and only report of this case to appear on the internet is from the archives of the local government's own industry newspaper - as its own blurb says a paper for "for local authority chief executives, their senior colleagues". So the story must be a true.

LakeDistrictBabe · 02/12/2013 20:02

Did anyone actually check Hemming's blog? Ahem...

IneedAsockamnesty · 02/12/2013 20:06

Lake c&p the vile mans blog I don't want to click on it

LakeDistrictBabe · 02/12/2013 20:08

Huhuhu.. So it comes out it is Hemming's fault then... This article is in Italian and it reports that the Sunday Telegraph wrote the original article:

www.direttanews.it/2013/12/02/gran-bretagna-italiana-costretta-al-parto-forzato-neonata-affidata-ai-servizi-sociali-e-scandalo/

Italian embassy in London says the woman chose not to contact them, she only went to the High Court in Rome once back in Italy.

The American family available for adoption is her ex husband's sister.

LakeDistrictBabe · 02/12/2013 20:09

@sockreturningpixie you're actually quite right in doing so, now I won't sleep tonight.. Ouch! :(

Spero · 02/12/2013 20:11

I have already spent far too much of my one precious life reading the self congtratulatory tosh on his website.

The ink from the wellies... yes, it sounds ludicrous, but if a child is covered in what looks like bruises and no one has an explanation, what do you expect child protection services to do??

I had a case where a child was covered in really nasty bruises - turns out she had some kind of virus which caused spontaneous bruising and only a really pushy doctor got the right kind of blood tests. The parents had no explanation -how could they? That could have been a really nasty case if the medics hadn't been on the ball.

But the little girl was only two. What were the LA supposed to do? Leave her at home to be beaten to death if they had been inflicted bruises???

Sometimes interventions are heavy handed, sometimes just wrong. But I am still waiting for evidence of these massive consipracies. Waiting for JH to post those stats from yesterday. Waiting, waiting, waiting....

StarlightMcKenzie · 02/12/2013 20:15

Forget about both evidence and hearsay for a minute.

Is there anyone here who works in or close to social services that can say with 100% certainty there could not possibly have been any cockups or cascade of events leading from a cockup in this story or any story like this?

That doesn't mean to say there WAS a cockup in this case of course, but I'm just getting a bit of a vibe that defending the profession (for perhaps good, if not misguided reasons i.e. people might be afraid to seek much needed help) is more important to some than admitting that sometimes, the safety netting just doesn't work.

The statement on the ECC website states that:

'Five weeks later it was the Health Trust's clinical decision to apply to the High Court for permissions to deliver her unborn baby by caesarean section because of concerns about risks to mother and child'.

If that is the case, they have broken the law as it is only the mother's welfare that should be considered.

Spero · 02/12/2013 20:19

I would be utterly astonished, sick and ashamed if this woman was sectioned, subject to an incredibly invasive medical procedure and had her baby removed for no good reason, simply as a consequence of some cock up or deliberate plot to steal her baby.

I welcome any investigation of what has gone on, which will hopefully reassure people that in the UK in 2013 we don't routinely drug women and steal their babies.

If I am proved wrong, I will march on Parliament, I will publish a full page apology to JH in the Daily Mail.

If he is proved wrong, what will he do?

wetaugust · 02/12/2013 20:20

Judge raised concerns about courts in 2010 plus reference to a couple of cases where CS were judged to have acted inappropriately.

www.theguardian.com/society/2010/apr/13/judge-shocked-social-workers-families

It does happen. They do get it wrong. They are not perfect.

LakeDistrictBabe · 02/12/2013 20:21

@Spero
No, don't wait for JH answers, you could not sleep tonight either.

Anyway, on messaggero.it there was a comment reporting that a similar fact has happened in Sardinia too, therefore the Italian law can order doctors to give a c-section to a woman unable to decide for herself.

Besides, the Italian ambassador in London is taking his time, because (I translate myself here) "we don't have all the facts and details".
Strange, JH thinks he has! Superpowers....

LakeDistrictBabe · 02/12/2013 20:24

@Talkinpeace As I thought, Italian authorities had been informed (on Italian soil though) and they let the English court manages the case.
I wonder why Hmm

Spero · 02/12/2013 20:25

JH is the perfect examplar of the saying 'to the man with a hammer, everything looks like a nail'.

StarlightMcKenzie · 02/12/2013 20:26

Spero, I also doubt there would not have been a reason. The issue will be around whether it is good enough and how someone came to that conclusion and whether the legal process did what it was supposed to. I would suggest that it would be in these murky waters that the cockups might have happened (if they did).

I have had a fair bit of experience in the legal system around families and individual and vulnerable people's 'rights', and I'm afraid that it isn't the balance and fair process it ought to be. No-one (government) gives a stuff and the professionals who deal with the protection of vulnerable individuals are not paid as well as those protecting the wealthy from losing a bit of their wealth. Those positions often don't attract the most talented in their field.

OP posts:
Spero · 02/12/2013 20:26

Lakedistrict well obviously because the Italian authorities are equally corrupt and part of an international paedophile ring and this baby probably had blue eyes and didn't you know that every social worker gets a Ferrari and tea at the Ritz for each baby she steals.

God, you are so naive.

IneedAsockamnesty · 02/12/2013 20:27

Spero I think I may not have explained my reasons for posting about the wellies thing,

I am not nor have I ever been a sw basher nor do I belive the conspiracy stuff (it would be amusing if I did given my employment history).

It was categorically not an attack of any sort at all just saying that yes sometimes errors are made and yes they can be shocking ones this is one I remember thing.

The poster who picked up on the comment I made calling it ludicrous perhaps thought I was sw bashing,

i had hoped that my comments about parents rarely confessing to either the press the wider comunity or even themselves about doing awful horrendous things to their children and being shocking parents, as the more likely situation and my belief that most of the parents I have contact with who had children removed bloody needed them removing would be the more noticed message in my post.

claig · 02/12/2013 20:27

Why is it John Hemming's fault?

What it does say is that John Hemming will ask in Parliament, how come she wasn't returned to Italy. He says that jurisdiction rests with the country of habitual residence.

I don't know if that is the case or not.

The Italian press may not have taken it seriously up to now, but now that it is all over our press, they will be forced to bring it up because otherwise they will be shown up to their own citizens who read about it on twitter, facebook etc

A Milanese legal official has already said it seems like a "horror movie".

Talkinpeace · 02/12/2013 20:29

the baby is 15 months old

why is this in the news at the moment ?

what are we being distracted away from?

IneedAsockamnesty · 02/12/2013 20:29

Oh and I will join you marching

Spero · 02/12/2013 20:31

Starlight - as I have admitted, luckily for me I have zero experience of SN Tribunals or what LA get up to there.

But I have an enormous amount of experience in the family court system at every level of court. The kind of decisions that were taken here would have been subject to enormous scrutiny. For something to have gone this horribly wrong EVERYONE would have had to be stupid or immensely corrupt. The LA, the Judge, the mother's lawyers. The child's lawyer and guardian.

If something has gone so terribly wrong, it must absolutely be investigated now and thoroughly.

But these proceedings have been on going for about 15 months. Just how stupid and inept were these woman's lawyers if they didn't challenge massive wrong doing and injustice?

Lets wait and see how successful Mr Flemming is. Presumably none of the conspiracy brigade doubt his credentials as he seems to be well in the pocket of JH.

I repeat; if JH's scaremongering is proved to be with out foundation WHAT WILL HE DO?

Mmmm lets take a wild guess. Absolutely nothing. He will just pop up here in an other six months with another stab at tabloid immortality.

Spero · 02/12/2013 20:32

Sock, I thought you would be busy doing something else, other than marching...
