Since 10 o'clock this morning now. I feel completely useless. It's thought they ran away. Sat here watching circling helicopters, I was told it wasn't necessary to go out looking by one of the mums (lives a few doors away) but i feel i should be doing something. What what you do?

I would go and help search, they possibly are sitting in a field somewhere.

essbee · 12/06/2006 13:25

That's what i'm thinking. I over look a couple of fields from where I am (which I can see over as I type this) which I keep hoping I'll see them in. Chances are if they have run away though they wouldn't be this near?? (2 mins from school)

Be like you, fretting, essbee.
If the police do need a hand with searching then you can do your bit. Or if there are lots of police around, and you are not near a shop, offer cold drinks? Any errands you could run for the mothers?
How awful, I hope they turn up safe and well :(

lucykate · 12/06/2006 13:29

if they're still missing later on this afternoon, sending some food for their families always helps. they will be frantic with worry, cooking will be the last thing on their minds, but they do have to eat, particularly if they have other kids too.

essbee · 12/06/2006 13:29

It is a bit strange though, I feel just sick and I hardly know them, can you imagine how their parents must feel? There is a shop etc and quite a few police now. Sirens galore too. I think I shall have to go and help, I feel so hopeless here.

Hope they turn up safe and well.

I sthere any police you could ask tosee if there is anything you can do?

waterfalls · 12/06/2006 13:30

I expect they are playing truant and have no idea they are being seached for, I hope all turns out ok.

waterfalls · 12/06/2006 13:32

I wonder if they have any older friends, in high school perhaps, who are also absent from school, perhaps at their house if the parents work.

peachyClair · 12/06/2006 13:33

I'd go search TBH, locals know nooks and crannies better than police.

Fingers crossed essbee XX

essbee · 12/06/2006 13:35

I so hope they turn up really soon and certainly by the end of school time. When they first came round (about 10.30) I just assumed being 2 boys together they would be fine and probably be found nearby soon. As the day has gone on and theh helicopters etc have appeared I've just felt ill. Anyway, every talking crap, this isn't helping anyone. I'm going to wonder round to see where I can help, even if it's just going over other places already searched. Will report in later.

:( Where would you go in your local area if you were a 9 year old boy? Maybe take a stroll there?

cupcakes · 12/06/2006 13:49

we had this at the juniour school last week - 3 children went missing and were found later playing in a derelict building quite near the school. The school called out a helicopter to look for them which hovered over for hours.

Because the school called the helicopter out they have been billed with the cost.
I expect they are playing truant - it's boiling hot and near the end of the year.
Obviously hope it is nothing else.
The use of helicopters really puzzles me. Do they really expect to find them like that when they're probably playing somewhere hidden. Even if something terrible had happened would a helipcopter be any use?

waterfalls · 12/06/2006 13:51

cupcakes

It cant do any harm, I'd want them out there if it was my child.

neena28 · 12/06/2006 13:52

Our local police helicopter using heat seeking thing when people have stolen cars driven them out her to the sticks and then legged it.

Am sure that would show up even on a day like today if they were in any woody bits/parks etc.

Hope they turn up really soon.

jampots · 12/06/2006 13:53

I instinctively assumed they were boys too charliecat - are thye boys or girls essbee?

cupcakes · 12/06/2006 13:55

but how can they differentiate between which cars are suspect and which are normal?

waterfalls · 12/06/2006 13:56

They can pick up body heat amongst bushes etc.

cupcakes · 12/06/2006 13:58

so - if a body was dumped and motinless or moving erratically then?
I suppose I was thinking that an abducter would just drive off in a regular fashion.

jampots · 12/06/2006 14:01

i think they pick up on just bodyheat cupcakes whether still or moving. Im guessing a dumped body wont be giving off a lot of body heat

Essbee - are you by the beach?

neena28 · 12/06/2006 14:02

Cupcakes they follow the stolen car in police cars then often once the criminals have worked out that the are cornered/ crash the car, they then scatter into the fields or peoples gardens.

The helicopter then uses the body heat to direct the police to where they are hiding. Would have thought they could also direct the officers on foot to anywhere strange locally that shows two heat sources.

waterfalls · 12/06/2006 14:02

I think its more in the hope that they can detect them hiding in bushes etc, not necessary abducted.
But they can pick up boody heat of 2 children and an adult, if god forbid they have been picked up, and its obviously easier to do during school hours.

neena28 · 12/06/2006 14:03

If someone has abducted them then no helicopter is no use...but it is soooo much more likely that they have played truant or just having a laugh that has got out of hand.

joelalie · 12/06/2006 14:04

Fingers crossed! Hope they are just playing truant although I'd have a few things to say the them if they are....Angry The poor family...I'd be in pieces. Don't know that there's much you can do but be available if you are needed Sad

Please let us know if there's any news.

waterfalls · 12/06/2006 14:05

The police will also assume truancy until the time they normally arrive home.

cupcakes · 12/06/2006 14:05

I just think if they are really playing truant (although I don't know how you could ever be sure) it seems incredible to call out a helicopter - it really glamorises truancy to the other children.
I really hope the children at your school are ok, essbee. I don't mean to demean your concern.
