DM Link: www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-2310797/Joan-Collins-right-Any-woman-wants-stay-beautiful-like--needs-diet-day-life.html

Some of her finest quotes in case anybody doesn't want to click.

"I am 42 years old and have been on a permanent diet for the past 30 years. The logic is simple and irrefutable: any self-respecting woman wants to be thin, and to be thin you need to spend your life on a diet."

"I don't believe overweight is ever attractive. Whether we like it or not, we live in an age and a part of the world where men and women regard thin as beautiful."

"I have no intention of letting my body slide flabbily into middle age. I believe that any woman with a modicum of self-respect should watch her figure with the same vigour."

"I was glad to see the back of Easter this month, as it seems to have been hijacked by the greedy masses who regard it as a free pass to gorge on chocolate."

"For three decades, self-denial has been my best friend. And one of my biggest incentives is that I know men prefer slim women."

"I have only ever dated men who kept a strict eye on my figure. My partners are not only boyfriends but weight-loss coaches."

"In the workplace, male bosses will always give the top job to a woman who looks fit and in control, rather than one who looks like a bulging sack in danger of imminent cardiac arrest."

"I fainted with hunger on one occasion - a minor hitch, eclipsed by the fact that I was being asked out on lots of dates."

"I am 5ft 11in and slimmed down to a size 8. One of my lecturers was so worried she pulled me aside to voice her concern. I put her intervention down to jealousy, as she was a size 16."

"Luckily for me, there is no better weight-loss incentive than a Frenchman. Pascal would not tolerate a fat wife and has told me that if I put on weight, our marriage is over. What more motivation do I need?"

"The world admonished Kate Moss for claiming that 'nothing tastes as good as skinny feels' but I'd go further. As I see it, there is nothing in life that signifies failure better than fat."

Hmm

I'm thinking of giving her the benefit of the doubt. She sounds as though she still has an eating disorder and is possibly in an emotionally abusive relationship, so isn't thinking straight.

On the other hand, she may just want another five minutes' of fame...

As someone who has never been happy with my figure (despite the fact i'm in a 'healthy' BMI range) this woman has made me feel like utter poo this morning.

But i know she's wrong. This is just her opinion. My friend is about four dress sizes bigger than me and is by far the prettiest woman i know. Size doesn't equal beauty. Nor does it guarantee success.

Personally, i'd have thought an employer would rather give a promotion to someone who was larger than someone fainting with hunger.

It's ironic that Pascal won't tolerate a fat wife, when he has a massive gut isn't it?

Admit it, land, you want to ride that gut like a Cornish wave, hmmn? Hmmn?

I'm with you, diddl. Obv people should make a bit of an effort to be appealing to their partner, but if partners are so fickle as to flounce off at a bit of belly fat then they are clearly stoopid.

She must lead a very sedantary lifestyle to have to limit her calorie intake so drastically. I'm a similar size but eat loads more. I also exercise, which she fails to mention.

those people saying 8.4 isn't that thin - she's 5ft 11! that's like about 6 stone for a 5ft 4 person. It would take starvation for me to get that thin, and I'd look half dead

Wow - this thread, or rather her article has been an inspiration - I have been thinking about what my next career move should be. This has provided me with a brilliant idea.

I am going to pick on a small section of society and im going to slag them off and get my own DM Column. I will have to be the anti-brick though because i am fat. So, let me think - hmmmm

"My husband likes me to be happy, he prefers a curvy bouncy and intelligent woman to a skinny, vain, vapid stick insect of a woman. I think any self-respecting woman should just hold their head up high and not waste time on fad diets and the constraints of fashion, i mean, really - are these women stupid, don't they know that men prefer to be able to converse when not having sex? I bet there sit there with their skinny lattes craving the full fat cuppuccino with a big fat chocolate cheese cake to go with it"

What do you think? Dya think i'd get in? Ok the grammar isn't great, but that wont matter for the DM will it?

I am very very thin. Thinner than Brick-features. D'you know what it took? Major head-injury followed by epilepsy. Appetite suppression is a side-effect of my meds.

Brain damage causes skinniness. Who knew?

Oh...

She can't be 8st4 now, she says she is a size 12, if she was 8stone4 at 5'11 she would be about a size 6. I am 8stone7 and a size 10 at 5'4.

I don't believe her.

If anything she says is true I feel desperately sorry for her. She has no self esteem at all, appears to have control freak tendencies, a possible eating disorder, be attracted to unsuitable possibly emotionally abusive and controlling men and a narcissistic streak a mile wide.
I pity her...

Report
PenelopePipPop · 18/04/2013 20:04

She says she used to be size 8 and is now size 12. She doesn't say she is 8stone 4 anywhere in the article that I can see. If she does say it anywhere then she is presumably fibbing because that would give her a BMI under 16 and would indicate she was proper ill - if she didn't have an eating disorder she'd be investigated for other health complaints. When my BMI went down to 17 I got a gastro referral sharpish, there was nothing wrong I just wasn't eating enough but my GP wanted to be sure. No one thinks a BMI that low looks healthy.

But to be fair she is advocating a dysfunctional attitude to food that may make women unhappy but she isn't obviously saying we should have unhealthily low BMIs.

Report
Sleepwhenidie · 18/04/2013 20:10

Where does she say she is 8st something? Wasn't that just posters on here talking about their weightsConfused? I don't think it was in that article...no way on earth is she that and size 12 at 5'11.

It's laughably bad writing EXCEPT that this awful attitude is endemic in our society and is attacking our daughters in particular but our sons too. One of the great gifts you can give your children is to show them you are happy in your own skin, whatever it looks like. Given the views she declares here I'm rather relieved Samantha and her shallow git of a husband are childless.

"One of the great gifts you can give your children is to show them you are happy in your own skin, whatever it looks like."

Completely agree. But it is bloody hard in a society where we are surrounded by cheap fattening addictive foods, where the jobs we do day-to-day don't make physical demands on our body that consume the calories we eat so we have to make special efforts to burn those calories off and where the 'role models' our children get are entirely artificial and maintain their physiques through a combo of unhealthy extreme diets, maintaining continuously unhappy relationships to food (a la Brick) and airbrushing or video-editing.

I think she may be part of the solution not part of the problem. She is so laughable you can show her to your teenager and have a giggle and say 'This! This is why you need to chill and have a bun and remember that how you look is only a tiny fraction of who you are and no matter how much you obsess about it you cannot control it.' Poor Samantha Brick obsesses endlessly over her appearance and manages to look pleasant, and that is all. All her efforts have achieved is....err...nice. And she obviously wants it to mean so much more.

But it is the things we do that we love, the people in our lives who make us smile, the time we invest in those relationships which actually define us and sadly Samantha can't see that. I know a Samantha who weighs twice what Mme Brick weighs and who doesn't have a boyfriend and who is probably only just getting in from work now after a long day working in a residential care home with adults with profound learning disabilities. She does her job brilliantly because she cares passionately about it and the people she works with know that and feel just as strongly about her and the commitment she shows to them. And she'll be lucky if she earns in a month what Mme Brick earnt for writing her crap and she'll never own a second home in France or marry a patronising arse called Pascal and if I called to tell her about this she'd laugh. Because she'd know that she was still winning on points...

She's got issues with food, and issues with relationships.

I'd be angry at what she's written, but actually I just pity her.
