This article was in the DM (yes I do read it, although I know it's shit).

I was hoping this was a spoof article given their names.
I just cannot believe that people like this woman actually exist!

I'm sure you'd find if it was suddenly legalised, many would be coming forward if the price was right. Doing it out the goodness of your heart means there's no alterior motive.

Xenia · 07/09/2012 19:40

I have no problems at all with profit motives. I don't see the difference between a wife who doesn't work giving her husband sex and cleaning and childcare services in return for being kept compared with a woman hiring her womb for 9 months except the latter is more independent and probably morally in a better position than the chattel kept wife.

We will have to agree to disagree lovechoc. I've talked about this to many, many women. Lots who live on the breadline, who would really benefit from the sums of money involved. To date I haven't managed to persuade one person to go ahead with being a surrogate.

In fact, I would go so far as to say the vast majority would say they wouldn't do it for ANY amount of money offered.

Melindaaa · 07/09/2012 19:42

I agree with Xenia.

There are people the world over grafting away, doing jobs they despise for a pittance. Why shouldn't women be able to choose to do surrogacy and expect to be paid accordingly.

lovechoc · 07/09/2012 19:44

being a SAHM is slightly different to carrying someone else's child for nine months actually...

Xenon
You need to retract that comment. It is appalling.

So is it really a possibility that a British surrogate wouldnt hand over the baby? Has it happened? How come it wasnt publicised?

Melindaaa · 07/09/2012 20:29

It has happened very, very rarely. It's a shame all the bad stories are publicised and the good aren't.

I personally know of one case where a baby was handed back to the surrogate mum, at her request, after the baby was found to be her husband's. Devastating for all involved, but thankfully she became a mother last year via a different surrogate.

I also met a surrogate who had twins, and one baby was born with a life limiting illness. The couple chose to only take the healthy baby home. Thankfully the surrogate stepped in to parent the baby.

Surrogacy works on trust, both ways.

There are some crappy people in the world really. The last couple dont deserve a baby if that is how they behave
