Article here

They are talking about revoking the Ecuadorian embassy's diplomatic immunity in order to enter the embassy.

Wonder if they will actually do so?

The most relevant thing I have read is on an earlier link to a legal blog. This bit:

So where is the persecution? Prosecution (including extradition proceedings) by due process in a democratic country with an independent legal system isn?t persecution.

That's sums it all up really. He is fleeing prosecution in Sweden and fear of prosecution in the US. His asylum claim is a joke.

TheDoctrineOfEnnis · 19/08/2012 19:21

Who gave that impression to you, Xenia?

noddyholder · 19/08/2012 19:22

I think they should allow him to be tried here. The extradition to sweden will just enable the US to get their hands on him for the wikileaks stuff. Neither the UK or the US give a toss about the rape charge they just want to stop any further exposes. If it was about the rape they would do it here. They are scared of what he knows

Empusa · 19/08/2012 19:23

It is very wrong to assume those reporting being victims of a very serious crime are lying.

As for lots, that would be 8%.

oh thanks Empusa. Didn't know that.

Still, I don't think that would impede his supports that much in any case. I am sure hacking for the right reasons against the right authority is a noble venture.

Noddy, the alleged sexual crimes happened in Sweden against Swedish women. How the hell could the crimes be prosecuted here?

LePan · 19/08/2012 19:26

Xenia - you are glossing over the ability of posters to detect the difference between freedom of speech issues and avoiding a rape trial issue.

NovackNGood · 19/08/2012 19:27

The only thing wikileaks has done that was of any interest was to publish the scientology ins and outs which quite frankly you can get by watching South Park.

Empusa · 19/08/2012 19:28

"If it was about the rape they would do it here."

They talked about bringing the relevant people here for a trial initially as he has always said he doesn't trust them not to allow his extradition to the US and he could end up like Bradley Manning.I absolutely believe he should face trial but don't trust teh US at all.

NovackNGood · 19/08/2012 19:35

Bradley Manning broke his own countries laws in his own country. Assange is accused of rape in Sweden. It's got nothing to do with the US. Mannig is a soldier in Uniform and therefore subject to and aware of military laws. He chose to break them and be a spy.

LePan · 19/08/2012 19:35

FWIW JA didn't do prison for hacking. According to pedia he was convicted in 1996 in Oz and paid reparation and a good behaviour bond. Not so bad.

Empusa · 19/08/2012 19:37

Ah ok, I got confused by reading about him being convicted.

OP posts:
TheDoctrineOfEnnis · 19/08/2012 19:37

Noddy, I believe the talk was if Swedish officers coming over for further questioning, never of a trial here.

Kladdkaka · 19/08/2012 19:37

I wouldn't describe 25 previous convictions as 'not so bad'. Hmm

NovackNGood · 19/08/2012 19:37

The judge said he should get 10 years but because he had been moved aroudn from school to school he was let of the prison sentence as he was young. 10 years is a serous sentence don't you think?

LePan · 19/08/2012 19:38

No Kladd, not as bad as prison, no.Hmm

LePan · 19/08/2012 19:39

Oh that's bollocks Novack. One doesn't go from 10 yrs to a slap on the wrist because of changing school a lot.

NovackNGood · 19/08/2012 19:41

It's not bollocks read it yourself.

ilovemydogandMrObama · 19/08/2012 19:43

Just out of curiosity, what happens to diplomatic immunity or rather asylum status if there's an emergency, say, needing urgent hospital treatment or a fire meaning out of the sanctuary of the Embassy?

NovackNGood · 19/08/2012 19:44

What is bollox Le pan is you say wikipedia says this and then you convienenty leave it the last part of the sentence...

In May 1995 he pleaded guilty to 25 charges of hacking, after six charges were dropped, and was released on bond for good conduct with a fine of A$2,100.[2][54][55] The judge said "there is just no evidence that there was anything other than sort of intelligent inquisitiveness and the pleasure of being able to?what's the expression?surf through these various computers"[2] and stated that Assange would have gone to jail for up to 10 years if he had not had such a disrupted childhood.

LePan · 19/08/2012 19:45

Novack - it's still bollocks. What sort of judicial system would accept that judgement as bona fide? But it was long ago in another galaxy.

LePan · 19/08/2012 19:48

No, Novack - I didn't leave anything out. I wasn't quoting from pedia. I said I had read it, in actual detail only the convictions list for hackers, where he appears. At least I got the basic fact right re not being imprisoned did I not?

NovackNGood · 19/08/2012 19:49

It is boa fide and it was the Australian Government and it was on this planet so feck all to do with any other galaxy although if you say you are onlylooking for little green men seemingly you'll find a whole bunch of sheep to support your defense even if you are alleged to be a serial rapist.
