It seems Bumbo are recalling seat in the US - you can send it back for a safety strap to be added. But not in the UK. Question is, who puts things like this on elevated surfaces in the first place, fgs?

We have this: shaped baby bath

Is very handy. Means I can have my hands free, plus it's smaller than a normal baby bath.

hazeyjane · 15/08/2012 20:46

yes the sponge would have just been flat as a pancake even when he was a year old!

I wish we had the bloody special bath seat we were assessed for. Now ds won't sit in the bath, so he will stand in shallow water holding onto the side, while I throw water at him!

Yes, that would be perfect! I would love for ds to be able to have a bath with his sisters, but just not safe enough. And we have waited so long (we are on a waiting list!) that now he just doesn't like baths.

Socknickingpixie · 15/08/2012 21:09

imho bumbos are useless stupid bits of tat unless they are used for OT reasons.

just why would anybody who didnt need to use one for the reasons they were invented spend that much on whats essentially not only not needed but clearly lulls people into a false sense of security.

if you put your child in one of these and its not on the ground you didnt ought to be looking after a baby without supervision from a proper grown up.

MsVestibule · 15/08/2012 21:20

You're absolutely right, Socknickingpixie. I was one of the idiots who did this, and my baby fell off the table. I have absolutely no excuse and over 3 years later, I still feel dreadful whenever I think about it.

bugsylugs · 15/08/2012 21:25

Wow sock no judgement there. Loved loved ours used it loads. Dc never tried to get out was partly wedged due to bulky nappies and hated shop/ cafe etc high chairs that he was still too small/ young for. Just be sensible. I bet many who are so vocal let more than one child on a trampoline at a time

giveitago · 15/08/2012 21:33

We loved ours - it let me do some cleaning and sorting when ds in it. I didn't put it on a table though.

What I loved best is that we started solids at about 5 months and ds wasn't that stable and it held him up and great for weaning. In fact, I didn't then bother with a high chair.

Moominsarescary · 15/08/2012 21:33

I thought it was a horrible uncomfortable looking thing. Ds thought the same and wouldn't sit in it

Falandfree · 15/08/2012 21:47

Wow, never realised that a discussion about the humble bumbo could get so bitchy so quickly! Hoik up those judgy pants ladies, I think you've still got room! Heaven forbid that anyone should EVER do anything with anything that it wasn't specifically designed for. Some of you have no imagination...

Socknickingpixie · 15/08/2012 22:00

bugsylugs ive never let more than 1 child on a trampoline at a time.

sorry but i do think they are, the ammount of times i hear a comment or see a photo of a child being left in one of these things either on a raised serfice or unattended because people think they are totally safe, and i know 12 people who own them and 11 children who have fallen out and needed a a&e visit.they look like very sturdy items but they arnt.

when my older kids were younger it used to be metal framed fabric bouncy chairs that were often used up high.equally stupid imo. but at least they didnt look as stable.

or was it the comment about shouldnt look after a baby unsupervised? sorry but if you cant work out obvious danger then you shouldnt untill you can work it out.

mrsV i reckon after 3 years and never doing anything simmerler you can probally stop beating yourself up. im very very glad your lo is still here

bugsylugs · 15/08/2012 22:02

Yes can see dangers thanks

MrsKeithRichards · 15/08/2012 23:21

Out of 12 people you know with one, 11 needed to go to a and e?

Bullshit.

Ozziegirly · 16/08/2012 05:43

Mine was really handy as a seat for feeding when we were out and about when DS was between about 5 months and a year, and was too small for a chair, but would just crawl/walk off if you put him on the ground (we do a lot of picnics and park trips).

Mine was second hand and quite cheap though, I wouldn't buy one specially for this.

He "fell" out of it on the ground a few times, but didn't do himself any harm as he had less far to fall than if he was standing up, and is a robust child.

NapaCab · 16/08/2012 07:44

A friend passed hers on to me along with a couple of other baby things when DS was 6 months. I didn't find it that useful as he could already sit up fairly well by then anyway. I started using it on the floor as a way to contain him while hoovering etc but he's 10 months now and can climb / fall / wriggle his way out of it so that's that...

I think it's mainly used with babies from 4 months onwards to make them sit up, which I don't like as it's too early for them. They seem popular though!

diddl · 16/08/2012 07:55

What is the point of them?

CouthyMow · 16/08/2012 07:58

DS3 could arch his back and twist out of his at 4mo. He did hit his head once, I wasn't quick enough to catch him as he attempted to escape, but that was the last time I used it.

All my friends raved about them. I think they're crap.

CouthyMow · 16/08/2012 08:00

And it was only EVER used on the floor.

nerfgunsftw · 16/08/2012 08:01

My daughter liked hers. Never fell out. I have fond memories of being able to do the washing up while she was in the bumbo next to the sink watching me and babbling. In my opinion it is safe as long as you are paying attention to them. It's a comfortable mobile seat that let's you have free hands.

CouthyMow · 16/08/2012 08:13

Oh, and he was only sat in it (with the tray) for short times, so I could answer the door, Hoover the room, or go to the loo. So he wasn't sat in it for hours either.

He just can't stand being 'trapped' in anything - he climbs out of the highchair, the pram, he had to go into a bed at 16mo because he refused to sleep in a crib with sides, he hates being cooped up, and always has.

He is currently 18mo, and I can't even keep him in any of the three sets of reins I have tried for him. He doesn't like holding hands either. He will, just about, hold onto the side of the pram, or endure being scooped up by me when he strays too close to the road, but being restrained, in ANY form? Ha! I wish!

And it's not as if I'm being overly PFB either - he's my fourth, and I never had these problems with the other 3.

He sits on a proper chair for meals, he walks freely or holds the pram (non-negotiable when crossing roads), he sleeps in a proper bed, he climbs out of playpens, and hates lifts.

When you have seen an 10mo NON-WALKING baby climb out of his pram, then try to crawl off, it does make you boggle a bit!

He is a bit of a naughty toad 'free spirit', my DS3. I have had to put on certain non-negotiables to keep him corralled safe.

CouthyMow · 16/08/2012 08:16

A Bumbo would have been safe for my DD, safe for a while with my DS1, VERY helpful for my DS2, but they only came out when he was about 8mo, and I had no money to buy one, he got chairs from OT anyway. But for my DS3? A useless piece of plastic!

DappyHays · 16/08/2012 12:04

My DD1 loved her bumbo, it was a great piece of kit. DD2 didn't use it so much.

I did however use it as a bath chair for DD2, and it was brilliant for that.

When they say don't use it in the bath, they mean not to leave your kid unattended in it in the bath. Only a moron would do that.

CouthyMow · 16/08/2012 12:13

He already climbs trees and he's only 18mo!

HoopDePoop · 16/08/2012 12:24

I got one for DS when he was about 4mo cos everyone was raving about them and he has always been a bit crap at sitting up - more interested on crawling and rolling around.

Anyway I stuck him in it outside a few feet from me while I washed out the cat litter tray the glamour and he reached out for a leaf or something and toppled over sideways and nutted his head on the concrete patio slab! Sad

It is currently awaiting ebaying - good resale value until this thread anyway
