It seems Bumbo are recalling seat in the US - you can send it back for a safety strap to be added. But not in the UK. Question is, who puts things like this on elevated surfaces in the first place, fgs?

Some people are idiots tbh

nickelcognito · 15/08/2012 14:27

exactly - why would anyone use an item obviously not designed for elevated surfaces on a table etc??
Shock

if it were designed for high up, there would be a strap.

ClimbingPenguin · 15/08/2012 14:30

some of the falls were on the floor, DS was able to arch out of his and would have really cracked his head if I didn't catch him. They seem to come with the impression that they are a really safe and comfy to contain a baby and IME none of these were true. As you can imagine we didn't have the seat for long.

As for people placing them on elevated surfaces, then I have seen a lot of this on fb.

TeaDr1nker · 15/08/2012 14:31

It always amazes me when peeps wonder why something happens when they are not using a product correctly.

The Bumbo has clear warnings on it - i will admit i used mine on raised surfaces but i was next to my child ALL the time.

U can't blame a product if u use it incorrectly, or can you?

peeriebear · 15/08/2012 14:33

I only ever used mine on the floor. I stopped using it when DD2 worked out if she arched her back and flung herself backwards she could get out of it.

GnocchiNineDoors · 15/08/2012 14:36

My Dmum suggested using the Bumbo in the bath Hmm

Some people are odd.

MrsNouveauRichards · 15/08/2012 14:59

I know of two children that have fallen out of bumbos that were on tables/worktops.

I had one for DS, but he could get out of it at 4m .Hmm

oldraver · 15/08/2012 15:01

I've never really thought they looked safe. My DS has always been very little so by the time he would of fit in one, I had read (from my Mums board) about babies falling out of them so gave it a miss.

I do like the moulding aspect and think there probably is room for it being incorporated into a low/high chair design, maybe as a removable insert but that it was used with a harness.

DS had the toilet seat and I wish there were an adult version Grin

MaryPoppinsBag · 15/08/2012 15:06

I don't think they are very good for babies development anyway. Read it somewhere / learnt on an early years course. It can delay muscle development for sitting.

Ofsted don't like them in nurseries either for probably the same reason that babies can climb out.

ChunkyPickle · 15/08/2012 15:12

People I knew used to plonk their baby in a bumbo, then prop the bottle on the standy uppy bit and leave them to it on the dining room table.

I did judge a bit... but their boy seemed pretty happy to be plonked down and didn't move about as a rule.

crappypatty · 15/08/2012 15:16

I bought one for ds who is now 8yrs old, He arched his back and came out of it, banged his head on wooden floor he was 5 months old.

I rang them to complain, and they just refunded the cost and I returned it.

Funnily enough I was talking to a woman at work a couple of weeks ago and she mentioned her son falling out of one when he was 5 mths old ( he is 2 yrs old now)

They gave her £500 when she rang up and complained.

barleysugar · 15/08/2012 15:21

I know of someone who was investigated by Social Services after their 3 month old fell out of it and hurt their shoulder. Apparently it was on the floor at the time, but I suppose you would say that wouldn't you?

GnocchiNineDoors · 15/08/2012 15:25

Confused DD is 7mo and though she wriggles in it, she can't get out of it. I also only use it on the floor on top of the thick rug. Tbh, even if she did fall out of it, she's only falling the height she would if she fell over from sitting which even 'competent independent sitters' sometimes do.

How they can be classed as dangerous, when used correctly, is beyond me.

I also haven;t found it to hinder DD sitting as she has been able to sit unsupported for some time.

They make a great little chair for weaning in Grin

TiggerWearsATriteSmile · 15/08/2012 15:25

I think they are bloody awful things.
I hate that people put tiny babies in them all squished up and then tell you how wonderful this product is cos little Tommy can sit up on his own now.

Eh, no. You are forcing the poor child into an unnatural position and he looks squished.

Rant, rant, mutter, mutter, stupid ugly chair

Silibilimili · 15/08/2012 15:27

I never saw the point of this seat.

TeWiDoesTheHulaInHawaii · 15/08/2012 15:33

DDs thighs were too chunky to fit in a bumbo!

I tried putting it in the bath once (she wasn't in it, I was just curious!) it floated and span upside down, so really can't recommend that.

whatsleep · 15/08/2012 15:46

When I worked in a children's hospital the physiotherapists used to use them for babies who had poor muscle tone and were unable to sit unaided. I think the purpose of the Bumbo is not for putting a child in who can already sit unaided but for babies learning to sit, and only for short periods. I agree it does look quite uncomfy but they are designed to create the correct posture for a developing spine? P.S I don't work for Bumbo, I just think they are great for the purpose they are intended for but rubbish for general sitting!

Silibilimili · 15/08/2012 17:12

It takes a couple of weeks to master sitting once the child has reached that development stage. So bambo and te likes are useful only for say 3 months. Before that, it's too early and after that, too late. Therefore I think they are a waste of money.

FeakAndWeeble · 15/08/2012 17:15

17mo DS found his old bumbo the other day (which I disliked and hardly used, for all the reasons mentioned above). He is currently going through a 'hat' stage and when he found it was too heavy to lift he simply bent over and wedged his head into it.

This was the absolute highlight of my bumbo experience.

HoobleDooble · 15/08/2012 17:21

Go exactly will a safety strap help if people are putting hem on raised surfaces (unless the strap fastens child into seat AND seat onto raised surface)? Surely if they're wriggling enough to escape, it will be a case of 'down will come baby, bumbo and all'?

Caerlaverock · 15/08/2012 17:25

My d loved being in it Obv, I stopped using it when she was strong enough to fling herself out.

Eskarina · 15/08/2012 17:31

Well I loved the bumbo, and so did dd. fab for weaning in. She came out of it at 7ish months when she could sit unaided then went into the high chair. Anything can be dangerous if used incorrectly

MrsHoarder · 15/08/2012 17:32

There's always people on MN talking about having there DC in the bumbo on the worktop: I never feel confident enough to comment (not having the cash for one myself).

DS has a bouncy chair at floor level until he's old enough for a high chair.
