Tony Blair for new PM. would it really be so bad?

I'm not the most politically minded so please all opinions welcome. Apart from 2 poorly thought out wars, was he so bad? The recession wasnt all his fault but a culmination of years of bad lending, high bonuses and the decisions of various governments.

AT least with TB it felt like we had a real government and pm. now we seem to have a bunch of clowns playing out their schoolboy fantasies and making us a laughing stock imo.

What do you think?

To become PM he'd have to be selected for a seat, be elected, mount a leadership challenge and win the electoral college. That's not going to happen. If the Lords reform goes through he could take a place on the candidate lists and get elected that way.

Lula

  1. Minimum wage hasn't benefited anyone. Those on minimum wage still need assistance or a 2nd job to make it. It also costs employers more and therefore they hire less people.
  1. Lowered the gay age of consent. I am hetero and age of consent is 16. The age of consent had no impact on my friends who were shagging like rabbits at ages as young as 12 and 13. If anything I think they should have raised the hetro age of consent to 18.
  1. Slashed NHS waiting lists.... Yes by spending money that the government didn't have. He didn't reform the NHS to enable the system to be sustainable.
  1. Massive investment in public services was not sustainable. It was also done to lower the unemployment numbers and guarentee votes.
  1. Labour let the education system continue to rot. It will be interesting to see what happens to the new Academies. Birkenhead High School for Girls was one of the best schools in the NW. I hear the results have already started to drop and that parents are considering moving to Chester/Manchester.

What I find amusing is that, had the positions been reversed, we would be berating the last Tory government in exactly the same way and been in the same situation. Including Iraq
.

Ryoko · 28/06/2012 17:25

TB (aptly named for he is like a progressive disease that slowly kills you over time) is th devil incarnate and I thought it was only Jesus who got a second coming?.

If he gets resurrected to PM then well I dont know what it means on the one hand it shows that in the eyes of the people anything is better then the Tories but then then does it also show that both the labour party and the people are stupid picking celebrity over real vision I don't know?

MetalliMa · 28/06/2012 17:31

I am with AmberLeaf

TwoIfBySea · 28/06/2012 17:38

You're basically saying that being poked in the eye with a sharp stick will be better than getting kicked up the backside with steel toe-capped boots.

TwoIfBySea · 28/06/2012 17:38

Can we get our independence before you all do this to yourselves?

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 28/06/2012 17:41

Yes, I was rather thinking that the prospect of TB back in Downing Street would be helpful to the "Yes" campaign.

Ryoko · 28/06/2012 17:43

You know it's very sad that labour has reached a point then they can see no other way then to be toy lite.

What choice do we really have in this country all we do is try our best to vote for a lesser evil, no one we agree with, no one who speaks for us and represents what ideals we hold dear, it's all just a compromise, tick a box to choose the best of a bad bunch no wonder the voting figures go down year on year we need a none of the above box that way they will know how we feel but I doubt it would change anything

EdgarAllenPimms · 28/06/2012 17:47

yes.

and don't forget, he's a Catholic now, they'd have to change parliament law...

MammaBrussels · 28/06/2012 17:53

Why would they have to change the law? There's no reason why a Catholic couldn't be PM.

It would be awkward for a Catholic to advise on appointments to the CofE but, as far as I'm aware, there are no laws that prevent a Catholic from becoming the leader of a parliamentary party.

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 28/06/2012 17:54

An explanation.

Want2bSupermum · 29/06/2012 00:31

I have never been so greatful to Henry VIII. I forgot that he switch to catholism shortly after leaving office. When I read about Martin McGuiness shaking hands with the Queen it did make me think he should have been shaking hands with Blair instead.

Ed Miliband is listening? to whom?

JosephineCD · 29/06/2012 00:55

What would Blair do now? Whoever the PM is, cuts have to be made.

Blair was a terrible PM. One of the worst in this countries history. He knew what he was doing was wrong, but he did it anyway.

A Catholic could still be PM. Constitutionally there's no reason why he couldn't be. I think he only said in the interview he'd like to be PM again, not that he was going to go for it.

Remind me again who was in power when the law was brought in that states that the PM of the country can make any legislation he wants without recourse to Parliament if they think there is a terrorist threat?

mumnosbest · 29/06/2012 09:32

Obviously we'd be better off with neither and its pretty dire when you have to vote for the best of the worst. We need someone new and decent to step up but a 'decent politician' seems to be a fictional character. No one denies cuts were needed but the cuts are happening im all the wrong places.

Another one with Amberleaf

FrothyOM · 29/06/2012 14:57

No way!

I'd much prefer Ed Miliband to be the next prime minister.

TalkinPeace2 · 29/06/2012 17:30

Ed Milliband's approach to politics must have his father spinning in his grave.

OlympicFlame · 29/06/2012 17:31

I'm sorry OP but have you fallen over and banged your head? Are you quite serious?
