www.telegraph.co.uk/news/celebritynews/9343267/Taxman-to-challenge-loophole-that-shelters-millions-for-Jimmy-Carr.html

Carr is an utter utter scumbag.

I work in the self-employed sector and have heard of these scams schemes, whereby supposedly you avoid tax by taking out a spurious 'loan' in order to reduce your income to zero. And I and all those I spoke to said 'this is not a legitimate scheme'.

I don't see any difference between this and fraud or theft. Long prison sentences are in order for these scum. He is using our fucking public services and refusing to pay for them.

People made a lot of noise about Red Ken getting paid through a limited company, but at least the limited company paid Corporation Tax. Carr is paying nothing.

How can he possibly think it is legitimate, legal or reasonable to say that his millions he earns are actually a loan on the never never? He is an intelligent man and should be made to pay the price of his actions. No fucking excuses.

They are all at it. Even years ago I remember Geti Halliwell moaning that they cohkdn't go back to the UK for months because they wanted to avoid tax.

But y'know let's back to the people scrounging DLA...

Aboutlastnight · 20/06/2012 20:28

Spice Girls, I mean am multitasking, ain't going well

EverybodysSleepyEyed · 20/06/2012 20:30

One of led zeppelin had to fly out of the country leaving his wife in a coma in hospital so he could remain a non resident

That was in the days of 99% tax though

Poulay · 20/06/2012 20:38

Jimmy Carr is an easy target cos he's a cunt.

OP posts:
PetitRat · 20/06/2012 20:43

Don't have much of an opinion on Jimmy Carr (except I feel uncomfortable about mass witch hunts in general) but am chuckling at Robert Peston's Tweet about the sanctimonious Mr Cameron...... "In branding Carr's legal tax avoiding as "morally wrong" PM licences every journo to trawl tax affairs of every Tory donor, minister & MP". Oh, I do hope so!

vj32 · 20/06/2012 22:18

Jimmy Carr isn't doing anything wrong, and someone has presumably (and illegally) leaked details of his financial affairs to the press. I don't really care about Jimmy Carr, he isn't that funny, but he isn't the worst.

I do care about the PM going on about how 'morally unacceptable' it is to do this. It is perfectly legal, and a well known loop hole. So instead of putting out yet more desperate appeals to attract the votes of the DM reading public, you could, you know, CHANGE THE LAW Mr Cameron. Being the PM and all. Might upset some of your rich mates though.

Poulay · 20/06/2012 22:46

That's awfully high and mighty of you. Are you using this scam too?

It's not 'perfectly legal', the legality is dubious at best.

There are public records at Companies House, and we should be grateful that they are, so scams like this can be exposed.

OP posts:
edam · 20/06/2012 22:56

vj32 - the guy behind the scam boasted about it to a potential client, who was actually an undercover Times reporter. The guy named Carr - quick check on publicly available records and the story stands up. They sought a comment from Carr.

Perfectly good journalism, with a clear and strong public interest reason for going undercover.

edam · 20/06/2012 23:01

... but you are right that Cameron could actually DO something about it rather than mouthing off. Only then he'd risk being in trouble with his own family, who use complicated tax-efficient schemes to manage their money.

Do hope Pesto is right about hacks crawling over the tax bills of major donors to political parties. Wonder how many of our cabinet of multi-millionaires use these kind of schemes?

CelineMcBean · 20/06/2012 23:06

Dh and I had a snurk at the pm's speech on the news. Because he'll be paying tax on all his income as if it's PAYE.

I think PetitRat's on the money about the press. What an own goal! Fleet Street must be in carnival mode tonight!

CelineMcBean · 20/06/2012 23:07

I forgot my wee humfy face after my first paragraph. Bugger.

Ryoko · 20/06/2012 23:12

Never liked him, he's not funny, now he is shown to be a hypocrite (all the stuff on 10 o clock live) it doesn't really surprise me.

DollyTwat · 20/06/2012 23:28

I was told about this loophole by another contractor.
He was earning quite a bit more than me and paid a high percentage of his salary to do it. I decided against it for me as it made me feel uncomfortable.

I think it works by putting your salary into an account off shore, then you have it back as a loan (which you don't pay tax on) but it all sounded very dodgy to me

So, it's not just famous people doing this, loads of contractors do it

FiftyShadesofViper · 20/06/2012 23:28

Sadly the more money people get, the more greedy they often get too. Instead of looking at anything overtheir essential needs as a blessing they seem to crave more and more.

There is a saying along the lines of "the man who has enough is as good as a millionaire". Shame Jimmy Carr and his kind haven't learned that

JosephineCD · 20/06/2012 23:44

How much is enough?

hackmum · 21/06/2012 10:40

Yes, it is immoral. People shouldn't feel proud of themselves for finding ways to avoid paying tax.

Everyone goes on about how terrible it is when the Greeks do it, yet some people seem to think it's perfectly legitimate for rich people in this country to do it.

Poulay · 21/06/2012 12:51

So he's changed his mind, having realised that it's damaging his career, the cynical shit

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-18531008

He says it was a 'terrible error'.

That doesn't mean he's going to pay the millions in back taxes that are due however....

OP posts:
gramercy · 21/06/2012 14:11

I had some idea that the "non resident" option was going to be stamped on, if the avoider to all intents and purposes maintained a resident lifestyle, e.g. had resident wife, children in schools etc. I don't know if this is actually due to come in or was all just fighting talk.

ajandjjmum · 21/06/2012 15:40

It is legal, although I would imagine the loophole will be closed as soon as the highly paid legal bods can get their heads around it.

When the tax was 99% here, you could understand people finding ways around it. Now that it's at pretty reasonable levels, it seems morally wrong.

And our accountant did speak to us about this scheme some months ago.

Poulay · 21/06/2012 15:48

What is legal? Non-domicile is legal.

Jimmy Carr's loan scheme in my opinion is not legal. It is not something permitted by statute, but there is no explicit ban on it either. Therefore to shut it down they have two options: spend millions fighting these bastards in the courts to show that it is illegal, or explicitly ban it.

The problem is they have got lots of clever lawyers and accountants and if they shut down one such scheme others will claim that theirs is different and is still ok.

OP posts:
Ryoko · 21/06/2012 17:01

As I said due to the jokes he makes on 10 o clock live this makes him a hypocrite, but other then that he's done nothing wrong, it's all legal. How many of Daves mates are doing the same?.

Thats what I want to know, they highlight a man in show business while turning a blind eye to all the party backers and businessmen/ bankers etc, Carr is just the tip of the iceburg and a very public fall guy.

He's crap anyway (sorry couldn't help it I really don't find him funny just smug)

merrymouse · 21/06/2012 17:20

Completely agree with you again Poulay.

It's only legal in the sense that HMRC hasn't yet spent millions of our money on HMRC v. Carr et al. to prove that its illegal.

Nothing wrong with The Beatles moaning about taxes. As they said, nineteen for you, one for me. Which is an accurate description of the then tax rates.

There's a big difference between making a protest song about 95% tax rates and simply refusing to pay taxes altogether.
