Just seen on the news that Laura Roberts has been sentenced to 2 years for rioting last year. Yet 2 young lads who had been talking about rioting on facebook got five years.
When this young womans court case first started my DH said "i bet she gets a lesser sentence than those lads did if she gets sentenced at all" i also thought the same as did others ive spoken to about this in RL.
Looks like we got proved right.

Might of known it was you Grin I personally did not expect anything better [anger] f**k the working classes as usual

Ryoko · 25/05/2012 18:17

As is all ways the way, did you watch the TV show about how we helped the Japanese bomb peal harbour?, the upper classes are all ways treated with kid gloves nothing will change until the sheep open their eyes and the revolution starts.

SardineQueen · 25/05/2012 18:17

Well of course what do you expect?

"talking about rioting" - oh really? not orchestrating a riot then. Not inciting people to riot.

How exactly is this a class issue?

Pan · 25/05/2012 18:35

TheJoy - I don't think they looted Accessorize did they?
No-one has ever been charged with accessorizing, so your post and it's 'accuracy' is a bit spurious is it not?

BonnieBumble · 25/05/2012 18:37

I think 2 years is right. I think 5 years for the Facebook guys was excessive. I understand that the sentences handed out in connection with the riots were deliberately harsh to discourage it happening again this year, however the sentencing of culprits was all over the place with no consistency whatsoever.

I don't think the class of the woman had much to do with her sentence tbh.

Pan · 25/05/2012 18:37

ah she was convicted of burglary and handling stolen goods. With other sentences being handed out for the riot-related offences she has gotten off mightily lightly.

I have zero sympathy for two adult males who are so dumb and nasty that they think it is amusing to take advantage of social unrest, carefully exploit it using sophisticated technology mechanisms with the express intention of inciting a riot. Riots in which many people lost everything they owned - and some people lost their lives.

And I couldn't care less what 'class' they are.

"talking about rioting" my arse.

Pan · 25/05/2012 18:45

TheJoy - not having a go at you at all, just the misleadingness of your post. She did steal, and having people steal stuff and allow it to be taken into your car/house is enough for 'handling'. Fairly straight forward, imo?

donnie · 25/05/2012 18:47

Pan - you don't seem to understand TheJoy's use of 'accessory' - as a legal term, as opposed to a necklace or hairclipConfused

donnie · 25/05/2012 18:48

Her post was not at all misleading!

TheJoy - I get ya Wink

ha!

"accessory" doesn't appear anywhere in the list of charges in England - though TheJoy implies heavily it does. (it's very American). "Different charge, different sentence". As it transpires, TheJoy had no knowledge of the actual charges for the convictions, in any case.

donnie · 25/05/2012 18:55

so where is the OP - I want to know why she will not come back and defend her flagging up of this as a class issue.

Gah. You can't comment on sentences unless you know the charge. The starting point of the sentence. The precons and any probation report. Also you can't assess any remorse. It's like pissing in the wind.

hecatetrivia · 25/05/2012 18:57

When you say 'talking about it', what exactly does that mean? What was their conversation?

lumbago · 25/05/2012 18:58

I've never ever heard the term in an English court.

Maybe you worked with office Krupke

Pan · 25/05/2012 19:00

"Come come Ms TheJoy, are you seriously expecting this court to believe that the word 'accessory' appeared regularly on charge sheets? I would humbly suggest that 'aiding and abetting' may appear from time to time. Did you do your 'police work in the United States?"

< ends with smug smile to the jury and sits down with a self-satisfied smirk, and examines finger nails..>

perceptionreality · 25/05/2012 19:00

Class doesn't have much to do with how much money people have.

lumbago · 25/05/2012 19:01

Also. Better defense lawyers. Makes a HUGE diff

Pan · 25/05/2012 19:03

erm....class has a massive effect on how much money people have and how much they can consequently spend on good legal representation.
