Total smoking ban in pubs and clubs - does this affect offices too?

Enid · 14/02/2006 19:51

So will smoking be banned in ALL public places now, or just pubs and clubs?

Oh this is such good news.

I am fed up with not being able to take my kids into restaurants.

I am fed up with having to wash my hair after a night out because of the smell of smoke.

I am fed up with not being able to go out for a drink with my mum, who has severe asthma.

I am fed up with having my social life curtailed while pg.

Smokers have every right to kill themselves. But not to kill me or my family.

(Or their families either ffs.)

(Another ex-smoker here-can you tell? )

LadyTophamHatt · 15/02/2006 12:57

This is the best news I've heard in weeks.

I'm absolutely over the moon about it.

Tinker · 15/02/2006 13:12

SuperTramp - I don't recall a landlord asking me tbh.

They have got rid of the smoking room in our office so assume it is now law.

NotActuallyAMum · 15/02/2006 13:13

Me too LTH - can't come soon enough, pity it's not going to be this summer

Lacrimosa · 15/02/2006 13:15

I heard someone saying at college 'cant they just put some fans up?' other student 'thats like putting a drop of bleach in water and saying its a bleach free area' good point I thought!

Nightynight · 15/02/2006 13:17

great news for non-smoking bar staff.

Lacrimosa · 15/02/2006 13:19

I am so looking forward to going out and not having to immidiatly go for a shower when I get home! I think I hate it more because I used to smoke.

SuperTramp · 15/02/2006 13:22

Tinker - I think the majority of people who go to pubs regularly also enjoy smoking. I doubt if the landlord would need to ask anyone - people seem to be quite vocal about their opinions on smoking.

If there really are so many people against smoking in pubs then why aren't pubs already catering for them? I think it will be like Flea says and the industry will lose out. It would be better to have some pubs non-smoking and others smoking IMHO. I'm an ex-smoker btw.

LovelyBigMuvverers · 15/02/2006 13:22

Lacrimosa - that's like having a piddling section in a swimming pool

Saw on the news yesterday that 48% of people polled believed that it should be illegal to smoke in your own home if you have children.

I'm really glad that the ban was voted for - I hope that by the time my DSs are old enough to go to pubs by themselves, smoking is seen as a really antisocial and unpleasant thing to do (which it is - another ex-smoker here, btw)

Tinker · 15/02/2006 13:27

Maybe non-smokers don't freqent pubs so much because of the smokers? The balance will change when the ban comes into force. Smoking is in decline, surely.

LovelyBigMuvverers · 15/02/2006 13:30

I agree, Tinker - I definitely don't go to the pub as much because it stinks - would take DSs in now if I didn't mind them being kippered, but as it is now...

And ST, what about bar staff? I was a smoker while I was a barmaid - couldn't have done the job as a non-smoker though - too vom-inducing.

Enid · 15/02/2006 13:36

so it seems smoking is banned from 2007 in all enclosed public spaces - thats the office sorted.

bozza until recently dhs dad (chairman of company) smoked so I suppose that is why they kept allowing smoking. good news he can legally get rid of it now.

OP posts:
Bozza · 15/02/2006 13:41

Ah I see. But I think it is unusual in offices already. Sounds like he is sorted though.

Enid · 15/02/2006 13:42

yes they just didnt want to piss off several long serving members of staff

but now have excuse and can blame Tone

JoolsToo · 15/02/2006 13:44

hallelujah!

funny though - they can still smoke in the House of Commons because its a palace [rolls eyes]

messagedeleted · 15/02/2006 13:46

i am thrilled about it!!
at our lcoal the owner has refurbed antoher pub he owns and banned smolking from now as he said the colour of the walls form the fags was foul.. it comes off as dark crwon water when they swish it off

sunnydelight · 16/02/2006 08:56

If it can work in Ireland it can certainly work here! I assumed people would ignore it in Ireland, but no - everyone is duly trooping outside if they want to smoke. Ironically where my dad lives (very rural) the pubs decided to ignore the law that said children must leave by 9pm in the evening (bad for business in an area that relies on tourism), but nobody is ignoring the smoking ban. It's lovely to be able to sit in a pub where you can breathe, and your hair and clothes don't stink at the end of the evening.

edam · 16/02/2006 10:43

The stat about 48 per cent of people thinking it should be banned in other people's homes is just ludicrous. It's none of their damn business. And don't forget a huge majority of the public say, when asked, that they'd bring back the death penalty. The majority isn't always right.

melrose · 16/02/2006 15:48

Fantastic new IMO. Supertramp I think it si a ridiculaous assumption that the majority who regularly go to pubs also enjoy smoking, certainly not the case among my friends (although a lot are ex- smokers)

Punb takings in Ireland have increased since the ban came into force now, cos those who used to avoid pubs due to smoke are now going there and (massive generalisation here, so don't shoot me) non- smokers tend to be welathier so spend more

mythumbelinas · 16/02/2006 16:21

Great news!!!! Can't wait!!! I hate having a rare night out only to go home stinking like an ashtray! I've never smoked and strong cigerette smoke can trigger headaches for me, so i'm so pleased
There's a child friendly bar i sometimes take the kids to (when i meet some friends who want to drink pints and not coffee!) and will be even better when it's smoke free!
When i have parties in my home, smokers have to go outside to smoke, nobody objects.

sharklet · 16/02/2006 16:33

Its fantastic!!!

I can't wait. I'll be able to enjoy going out and not come home stinking and with a stinking migraine from all the smoke.

Lucycat · 16/02/2006 16:38

Jools - that's just typical though isn't it! It's actually very ironic that they've pushed for a total ban - but not in the House of Commons bar as it's Crown property!!

ruty · 16/02/2006 17:11

my non smoking dh still has to work in an office where the boss smokes. Tell me, can my dh do anything about it? Hard when its the boss, but now as it stands it is illegal, yes? Before i think it was only a guideline.

Skribble · 16/02/2006 17:26

I live in Scotland so roll on March when the totl ban comes in, yipee!!! I went for a weekend in Scotland and loved going out, we ended up in a wee old mans pub and I thought they might not be too stict but no the wee old men went outside to smoke, you have more chance of a lock in than a smoke in a pub in Ireland as we discoverd at 1am .

I remember when it was normal to smoke on the bus, then it was just the rear and you still stunk of smoke. As for smoking in offices I thought that you were only allowed to have smoking in the staffroom if there was also a non smoking one. Comes under the Health and Safety laws. But once the new law comes in I think offices won't be excempt under any circumstances in England anyway.
