those stories are utterly depressing.

bundle · 09/02/2006 17:01

what if he was your child uwila? he is someone's child.

peacedove · 09/02/2006 17:03

there was a shia family of Gujrat (Pakistan) or Gujranwala, the young daughter of whch heard voices calling the family to Kerbala. They went to Karachi to embark on a boat, but the fare was too high.

The girl said: "cast your trunks (large trunks made of galvanised sheets, used for storing clothes etc.). They did that, and most of the family including the girl were drowned.

The surviving members kept c=weeping that drowned ones have met the Imam, but we have been rejected.

Hearing voices is very dangerous. I think Joan of Arc also heard voices.

Marina · 09/02/2006 17:03

Uwila, wasn't that woman mentally ill though? Surely? (the one who drowned all her children )

Marina · 09/02/2006 17:04

Hearing voices = often a symptom of severe mental illness, unless of course your defence have concocted that line for you.

uwila · 09/02/2006 17:04

Sorry, I have no trouble routing for the death penalty in such a horrible monster. The worls is better without him.

Premeditated murder of your own spouse and child is horrific. Defintiely death penalty.

peacedove · 09/02/2006 17:05

Oh yes the parents of the woman made the funeral arrangements. very depressing for them it must have been.

uwila · 09/02/2006 17:06

Hi PD. Never thought I'd see youon a non religeous thread.

Theer should be a personality test for spouses as it is for potential employees.

peacedove · 09/02/2006 17:09

hi, my religion covers everything, only I have limited time and limited brain power.

uwila · 09/02/2006 17:13

Hmmm... isn't that what courting / dating is all about?

OP posts:
peacedove · 09/02/2006 17:14

then why do many such marriages end in divorces, or splits, or even murders?

bundle · 09/02/2006 17:19

uwila, just want to make this clear, you have no problem with the death penalty for your children?

JoolsToo · 09/02/2006 17:28

hearing voices is also a very handy defence [rolls eyes]

Marina · 09/02/2006 17:30

Jools, but it's so widely known to be a potential defence cop-out that psychiatric assessments are now extremely thorough, aren't they? Surely no-one would want the death sentence, or even imprisonment in a standard jail, passed on someone who was clinically mentally ill, however loathesome their actions.

LeahE · 09/02/2006 17:32

Marina - yes the Texas woman was suffering from postnatal psychosis I believe. Plus they belonged to some religious sect that believed you should have as many children as possible, medication is bad, women need to stay home 24/7, that kind of thing. IIRC there was shock that given her mental and medical history things had been allowed to get to that stage.

expatinscotland · 09/02/2006 17:34

Uwila
That lady was called Andrea Yates, and she had a long and truly sad history of mental illness. I'm from Houston, where she committed those murders. As my mom put it, 'Her husband and family should have been put on trial w/her.' Her husband was a religious freak who didn't want her to use birth control, despite urgent pleas from her psychiatrists. Mrs Yates had postpartum psychosis and schizophrenia, which worsened w/each child. Still, she had 5 kids and her husband wanted them home schooled. Mrs Yates was in and out of psychiatric hospital, but never for too long b/c of medical insurance. She was discharged from a psychiatric ward just days before the murders despite efforts from her psychiatrists. She'd become delusional and paranoid. But the medication made her foggy and unable to look after the kids, so she didn't take it. She went crazy. She was truly insane.

Although she was found competent to stand trial, she truly wasn't. Her sentence has since been thrown out on appeal and she has been committed to a state mental hospital. Probably for good. She's very disturbed.

HOw did this become a religious debate??

Marina · 09/02/2006 17:35

Thanks for clarifying that expat. I recall at the time being shocked that someone so clearly traumatised by the life she was living was put on trial for murder. Poor woman, and poor children too. All victims I think

Marina · 09/02/2006 17:37

We are digressing from the Entwistle case though. Will he plead mental illness? He seems to have managed to leave the country and return to the UK without attracting attention

Hmm, my thoughts exactly Fio. All seems horrifically premeditated. Feel thoroughly down about Lillian and that poor little fellow in Smethwick

Stupid, nasty, feckless man . What a MUG's game to get yourself into

pebblemum · 09/02/2006 17:45

have been reading this thread all day but couldnt think of anything to write that hadnt already been said but now I just want to say in answer to what Bundle asked Uwila if any child of mine deliberatley murdered someone expecially their own children I would want nothing to do with them. They did the crime they should pay. I have always believed that if you deliberatley take a life then why should you be able to carry on with yours. I also believe all paedophiles should be castrated but thats another thread.

If someone murdered someone you love would you be happy for them to spend 20yrs in prison before being released and being able to get on with their life, something their victims never had a chance to do? I know i wouldnt. Also I think too many people use the old 'mentally unstable' excuse for their crimes. Half the time it is premeditated but the lawyers have to come up with an excuse for their clients actions and that is the easiest path to take.

Sorry if my opinion offends anyone but thats how i feel.
