Victoria Beckham's choice of hat for meeting the queen - oh my goodness, what ever made her think it was nice?

You have made me think of 1 of those questions I should know but don't....where does real hair for hair extensions come from?

...if its real is must come from another person, who has a business in finding hair...how do they do it?

...and to show my complete lack of knowledge of Literature, which Thomas Hardy book did the girl cut of her hair and sell it to the local Lady for a wig?

I'm afraid I am going to have to come out of mumsnet retirement for a quick rant here... Does everyone else agree with Doormat, that DB is a good role model and worthy of an OBE??? I couldn;t believe that he got one. For what? playing football and earning ridiculous amounts of money for doing so!!

I would have thought that OBEs should be for people who have really contributed something to society. Saved lives, helped others, or got involved in some kind of charity work (e.g. Jamie Oliver).

Why should someone get an OBE just for being rich and famous?? why is spending millions of pounds on clothes something to be proud of? I often think its pretty depressing the amount of money DB gets and although he has kids, he and his wife seem to do nothing to help others. Doesn't being a parent usually make you more sympathetic to others and less self absorbed?

MUM2ELA · 28/11/2003 13:57

eve2 - re: the real hair for extensions thang. I asked my hairdresser this and the most expensive extensions comes from nuns who grow their hair and then sell it, obviously pocketing the cash themselves . . .

tigermoth · 28/11/2003 13:58

lil

hear here to that!

SenoraPostrophe · 28/11/2003 14:02

lil - perhaps he got the OBE for being a footballer and not raping anyone or beating anyone up?

loved the hat though! I'm going to make myself one for my wedding.

SoupDragon · 28/11/2003 14:04

Spotted a good headline in one of the tabloids (not sure which one, I was looking over someone's shoulder!) OBE - Order of Barmy 'Eadgear.

totally agree Lil! maybe all footballers not accused of racist beatings, rapes and hit and run killings should all be given OBEs. In fact, I have never committed any of the aforementioned crimes so i reckon I'm due a gong......seriously though, I have nothing against Beckham but can't really see how he is a) a 'good role model' or b) a good ambassador for the UK. Did anyone see Ben Zephaniah being interviewed about his refusal of an OBE ? Ouch!!!!

fio2 · 28/11/2003 15:25

I think David Beckham is a good role model to a certain extent and he and victoria do do charity work()

But...You really should see how hard the staff work at my dd's special school, some of them are not paid for it either. The love and care they give to all the children there is amazing. The kids are so happy and I feel like my dd has two families - one at home and one at school. Not only that alot of the teachers and carers also work in third world countries during the school holidays in special schools there. They really should be commended but none of them ever are, and even if they do get OBE's eventually (or whatever it is for that kind of work!) they never get the kind of public response that celebrities have. Then again some people are just saints on earth (talking about carers here, not celebs!!)

hmb · 28/11/2003 15:29

My old Dad used to cynically say that OBE stood for 'Other Buggers Efforts'. It is true that some people deserve and award for a lifetime of graft for a good cause, and some get it for being heroic, but I'm sorry Kicking a football doesn't cut it for me.

fio2 · 28/11/2003 15:59

I agree with your dad hmb

Northerner · 28/11/2003 16:03

David Beckham is a very good footballer, but I also do not think he deserves an OBE. There are far more deserving people out there. D & VB are too full of their own self importance IMO, and this will only add to it. They'll disappear up their own backsides before long.

I did laugh when they interviewed VB about her day at the Palace and she replied 'it's been a lovely day, everybody's dressed really smart and everything' Not like I'm so proud of my husband or anything then.

You might have taken that 'girl power' bloocks seriously, but I don't think that many women did

hmb · 28/11/2003 16:41

Sorry, wailing ds, Bollocks.

fio2 · 28/11/2003 16:44

huh girl power?......some tarts flancing around?

Queenie · 28/11/2003 17:12

A female icon? When? Sorry, I missed that.

naughtynoonoo · 28/11/2003 17:16

Are we going to watch TOTP tonight and Parky tomorrow for another bitching session?! It made me laugh last night when he kissed her she just pouted her lips and all she got was a smackaroonie on the nose - I wonder what body language analysts thought of that one. I agree she needs to sort her teeth out - maybe thats why she got such big tits to take the spotlight away from her gob. The way she was with DB yesterday touchy and stoking, couldn't she just hold his hand?

janh · 28/11/2003 19:57

Make your own Posh hat (it's from the Sun so you won't be expecting much I hope )

SenoraPostrophe · 28/11/2003 20:03

janh

You've obviously been working hard today!

janh · 28/11/2003 20:25

Defo too much time on my hands if I'm looking at the Sun, you mean, Señora?

Anyway, in the poor girl's defence, look at pic 2 - her teeth are OK really!

SenoraPostrophe · 28/11/2003 20:46

yes, her teeth are good. We'll have to find something else to bitch about!

doormat · 30/11/2003 10:04

Lil he is a good role model IMO, lets face it what other celeb is out there that can show the youngsters of today that life is not about thuggeryor scandalous behaviour but of being loyal, great at your profession, a good family man etc etc.and you can do all that and be captain of england.
Kids look up to him and maybe they will take on his good points.Look what he did with little Kirsty at the Commonwealth Games in Manchester when he picked her up and kissed her.DB did not have to do that for popularity at all as he was already famous. He seems a genuine caring bloke.

I agree with fio there are alot of worthy people out there who deserve an OBE more than DB but unfortunately they are not in the public eye.

handlemecarefully · 01/12/2003 10:43

I'm not especially a VB fan but I quite liked her hat and thought enviously that her hair looked sleek and glossy.

Also thought that she came across as quite likeable on Parky at the w/end. Perhaps with it being the Christmas season I am suffering a surfeit of goodwill!
