Hosepipe bans and paddling pools

So if I fill our paddling pool up with old bath water and a couple of warm buckets from the kitchen sink is that gonna be flouting the ban?

Can't imagine a summer where I don't have the paddling pool out for 3 DSs Sad. Wouldn't use the hosepipe on the sly as have one quite nosy neighbour...

But if you technically don't fill the paddling pool from the hose but use buckets from indoors is it still going to get me a fine?

www.environment-agency.gov.uk/homeandleisure/drought/131105.aspx

Info about drought and hosepipe bans. Tis a serious situation... (oh and water companies get fined for leaks but even without them we'd still be in this situation)

echt · 17/03/2012 04:34

You.do.not.need.a.pool.

It's nice but not necessary.

MOSagain · 17/03/2012 07:22

We are on a water meter and pay 29 per month only to be told when we can use water Hmm

cookcleanerchaufferetc · 17/03/2012 07:25

The 7 water companies Imposing a ban are losing 300 million gallons of water a day ...THREE HUNDRED MILLIONS every fuckng day.

I already conserve water but should there be some decent weather in the summer I will fill up a paddling pool with buckets. kids need pools ... It is a great part of their childhood.

These water companies need to stop paying dividends and the government needs t o introduce massive fines.

TheHumancatapult · 17/03/2012 07:36

chops thank you did not know about examption for being disabled .And we are on water meter so pay for what I use anyway

ohyouBadBadkitten · 17/03/2012 08:02

veolia have described the restrictions very well in their document.

TheHumancatapult · 17/03/2012 08:32

like teh very first thing at top of list thats it is fine for a national or intenrational event to use a house .Well thats all money being used to keep it green for the olympics then

ohyouBadBadkitten · 17/03/2012 08:58

THC - I hadnt thought of that! I guess making the olympics look lush and green will take rather a lot of water. (how ironic!)

Bunbaker · 17/03/2012 09:15

"only to be told when we can use water"

If there isn't any that point will be irrelevant.

"I will fill up a paddling pool with buckets"

"You.do.not.need.a.pool. It's nice but not necessary." I agree with echt. It isn't just about what you want. Stop being so selfish.

BTW it is flinging it down here.

ohyouBadBadkitten · 17/03/2012 09:29

just drizzle here. Was looking at my recorded rain fall over the past six months. Way, way down on the met office averages for this region - with only December being a little above average.

TheHumancatapult · 17/03/2012 09:32

yep while I can not turn a hose on but they can run around watering all the displays ready .

Am wondering just out on intrest of they do tighten up and we ended up with tand pipes etc I would imagine they will have to put things in place for disabled people anyone know?

am just curious does anyone know what the level is when we tip from hose pip ban to more sever drought levels

frasersmummy · 17/03/2012 10:10

This thread just goes to show that when govt (local or otherwise) tries to solve a problem they need to think it through properly instead of making knee jerk reactions with silly unenforceable rules

Legally you shouldnt fill up up your paddling pool with a hosepipe but its fine to fill it up with buckets... and this saves water how?? oh thats right it doesnt but it makes some beauracrat somewhere feel important

TheHumancatapult · 17/03/2012 10:22

jut to put into perspective

Thames Water?s new ?blackwater? recycling treatment plant which can deliver between 500,000 and 800,000 litres per day and will be the main source for a number of non-potable uses on the Olympic Park (e.g. plant landscape irrigation, toilet flushing, supply to the new Energy Centre).

and were on a drought

Changebagsandgladrags · 17/03/2012 14:00

OK, so we're allowed to use a watering can, but not a hosepipe to say, fill our watering can.

Right, what tap do I have to use for that, do I have to trudge my can inside and relocate all the festering dishes so I can fill it up? Or can I use my outside tap? Now here's the problem. The hosepipe is attached onto the outside tap with some sort of contraption that we've never managed to undo in 5 years.

So, can I fill up watering can using my hosepipe? And if I'm to fill up the paddling pool I'm to use a bucket, filled by the hose?

MOSagain · 17/03/2012 15:17

think on my local water company website it said you could use a short length of pipe attached to a tap to fill a watering can. I suppose they assume it will deter people as many probably won't be bothered to keep filing up buckets to fill up a paddling pool whereas if they could use a hose pipe they would and would probably leave it on longer than needed and therefore use more water than they needed.

Bunbaker · 17/03/2012 17:18

"Sadly for many people it works on a 'they are doing it so I will too' "

Well said. Paddling pools are not essential. I can't believe how irresponsible some people are being.

libbyssister · 19/03/2012 22:30

Also... In our town we have one of those water fountain play areas in the local park - one where the kids stamp on a button and the water shoots up in arcs and shapes and stuff. It's a great alternative to having a paddling pool. Do you think this will be turned off if there's a hose-pipe ban?

Chopstheduck · 20/03/2012 09:03

it annoys me too that there will be plenty of water for the olympics, for the queen's jubilee, etc, but it's the bottom end consumer who prob also pays the most for their water who has to make the cut backs.

Chopstheduck · 20/03/2012 09:04

We had a leak last year - it took them three weeks to send someone out to fix it whilst our patio was a foot deep in water. No wonder there is a bloody shortage.

Chopstheduck · 21/03/2012 07:11

I spoke to Veolia yesterday and they say you def CANNOT use a hosepipe to fill a watering can. Arseholes!

DS is registered exempt from the ban now tho, for the purpose of watering plants only. so it will be his job to water the veggie patch over the summer!
