Bus driver knocked cyclist over on purpose!

here

What is even more shocking is some of the comments below the article.

I've read on here about anti cyclist sentiments, but never come across it like this. Everything but coming out and saying he deserved it!

I saw that on the news. I get that the bus driver was annoyed, but you can't just crash into people who annoy youAngry
I cycle, and it worries me that anti-cyclist sentiment might make people cross with law abiding cyclists over incidents with less diligent ones.

overmydeadbody · 17/02/2012 16:35

I find this, and the attitudes of other people towards cyclists, quite shocking!

Shock

I don't understand where all the hate comes from towards cyclists. As a daily cyclist, it really worries me.

What is wrong with people? Why are they all so selfish, to the point of wanting to hurt cyclists?

Pixel · 17/02/2012 18:31

I can't believe that, I was expecting to see a little nudge, which would be bad enough but he really side-swiped him. Shock

EduStudent · 17/02/2012 19:30

Yeah, some cyclists and motorcyclists and car drivers and van drivers and lorry drivers and bus drivers and pedestrians can be annoying, inconsiderate or downright dangerous. Purposefully harming them in a way that could cause serious injury or death is unspeakable Shock

LanceCorporalBoiledEgg · 17/02/2012 19:41

I saw a woman knocked off her bike on purpose by some knobhead in a car :(

PestoPenguin · 17/02/2012 19:47

Dear God. That looked more like attempted murder to me!

Sparklingbrook · 17/02/2012 19:51

I was really Shock. I had to watch it twice to check I had seen it right, Blush

ragged · 17/02/2012 19:52

DH & I once reported to police a driver who attempted to run a cyclist off the road. The cyclists' "crime" was holding the driver up for 15 seconds (legally, by overtaking a slower cyclist). :(

JustHecate · 18/02/2012 09:32

Shocking, isn't it? nobody deserves that. And you're right pesto - attempted murder. That's what it looked like to me too.

I just can't get over some of the comments on that article either. I don't cycle, and I'll be honest, when I see a big group of cyclists on the road ahead I do let out a little sigh Blush cos a group is really hard to get past. But I'd never wish harm on them or drive in a way that would be dangerous to them or frighten them. I live in an area that is really popular with cyclists, and some of the things I've seen. My god. They must crap themselves on those bikes sometimes. I've seen people speed past them at 60 so close they could reach out and touch the car. I've seen people driving inches behind them. Clearly to intimidate.

I see the same with horses. One woman was nearly thrown the other week when a van sped past them with no gap at all. Horse reared. It was scary. I stopped and asked were they ok. There's no excuse for it at all. (not me asking if they were ok Grin )

Purposefully harming them in a way that could cause serious injury or death is unspeakable - sorry but it isn't unspeakable - its attempted murder

It is using a vehicle as a weapon, in the same way as using a hammer or a gun to hurt a person.

overmydeadbody · 19/02/2012 15:05

And for that attempted murder, the bus driver only gets 17 months. Hardy sending out the right message to other motor users. Perhaps if the penalties for treating cyclists so badly were harsher less people would do it. That bus driver will be back out on the roads in the future.

I recon drivers should get points on their licences for knocking over cyclists. The man who knocked me off my bike just drove off Sad and DP was ran off the road by a white van the other day, DP had to actually bunny hop onto the grass verge, and the van driver was doing it deliberately, while shouting at DP to get off the road.

Tortington · 19/02/2012 15:09

go through a red light - get points, speed and by doing so drive dangerously - the deterrent - points to deter you from driving dangerously

actually drive dangerously - no points.

i hope he got his livence took off him

ivykaty44 · 20/02/2012 13:36

That bus driver will be back out on the roads in the future

Not as a bus driver though and he will struggle to get a job with a criminal conviction, his life will be harder after his release as each time he applies for a job and they find he has a criminal conviction he will no doubt not be offered the job.

overmydeadbody · 20/02/2012 22:07

Good

ivykaty44 · 20/02/2012 22:36

yes - not much consulation though.

I lost a school friend as two drivers had a race on a road in town (school holidays but three schools along main road) she died a horrifc death as mother and son raced at speeds up to 60mph.

The son was sent down, he served 24 months but didn't work for a good few years afterwards, but It will never bring that beautiful girl back to life that his life is shite

AChickenCalledKorma · 21/02/2012 22:20

This happened to my DH. White van deliberately side-swiped him. He was injured. There were witnesses who agreed that it was deliberate. They got the registration number.

Police treated it as an accident and basically shrugged their shoulders. Not willing to do anything. We have lost all confidence in the criminal justice system Sad.

GladysLeap · 22/02/2012 17:36

That article only tells half the story. The cyclist had already banged on the back of the bus, stopped in front of it to pull the windscreen wipers then deliberately planted himself in front of the bus in such a way that he was blocking the road. Deliberately. Because he thought the bus had cut him up on a roundabout. Basically it was 6 of one and half dozen of the other. Yes the bus driver shouldn't have retaliated because his was the larger vehicle and he had passengers, but the cyclist was equally culpable and didn't get prosecuted.

There is a certain type of cyclist round here that thinks they are better than everyone else and this bloke seems to be one of them. I walk to work along a shared pavement and have been almost mown down several times by cyclists doing about 30mph on my bit of the pavement.

overmydeadbody · 22/02/2012 17:52

Gladys it's not six of one and half a dozen of another. The bus cut the cyclist up at a roundabout. The cyclist was angry because he almost got killed, the bus driver was angry because he was held up. Totally different things.

It doesn't matter how badly a cyclist cycles, they are vulnerable road users and if yo're in a vehicle you give them room. Simple.

overmydeadbody · 22/02/2012 17:56

And Gladys, have you ever been cut up on a roandabout by a bus, when you're on a bike? Because it happens to me almost daily and it is a terrifying thing. Far more life threatening than a cyclist zooming past a pedestrian at 30mph (those are fit cyclists!)

UnimaginitiveDadThemedUsername · 22/02/2012 18:18

There's an article in the Graun today about how it's only when cyclists with helmet cameras record people trying to kill them with vehicles that the police finally swing into action.

KalSkirata · 22/02/2012 19:03

the majority of cyclists are actually law abiding. What drivers dont like is being held up for a couple of seconds and have the mentality they own the road

ivykaty44 · 22/02/2012 20:19

gosh yes that 2 seconds is important - they need to get to red traffic lights and wait in line with all the other motors, sad but true I have been overtaken by several motorists squeezing past to only then over take them myself on my bike whilst they are then sat 5 yards down the road at red traffic lights.

I also see a lot of speeding up to red traffic lights whilst I am driving a car - I wonder why they want to waste so much money on braking and using fuel, they may as well set fire to a 5 pound note every day, bizare behaviour

PestoPenguin · 22/02/2012 21:18

I'm amazed at what you've writen Gladys Hmm Shock, absolutely none of what you say excuses what the driver did, which seriously injured and could have killed a man!

AChickenCalledKorma · 22/02/2012 22:00

Gladys according to your logic, the next time someone gets cross with you about something and/or delays you by a few seconds, you will feel entitled to drive over them

Does that really seem reasonable to you, in the cold light of day?

If so, I sincerely hope you don't hold a driving licence.

YuleingFanjo · 22/02/2012 22:06

"The cyclist had already banged on the back of the bus, stopped in front of it to pull the windscreen wipers then deliberately planted himself in front of the bus in such a way that he was blocking the road. did you watch what the bus driver did? I mean really? because even if you consider the cyclist a bit of a dick I would not be happy to use a bus company who's drivers thought ramming into other road users was acceptable.
