Edwina Currie reduces struggling mother to tears live on the radio by putting her debts down to living 'a very good life indeed'

Eggwina obviously did well on her back, ask John. It doesn't mean she should lecture people who have kept their knees together at work.

I knew you were going to say that Wink I have some right-wing friends, but we aren't close friends, possibly because there are aspects of our worldviews that are irreconcilably different.

molly3478 · 19/02/2012 20:58

I think edwina is out of touch and do feel sorry for the couple as they are obviouly people that try.

boffinmum - I think most people do their shopping for way less than 100 quid a week. You can get massive fruit boxes here that feed a whole nursery for 2 day 5 days worth of snacks and a week for just a fiver. There are lots of ways to eating cheap if you buy local also things like quorn mince are a pound of baf and make loads of meals. Toilet roll is 42p in tesco for 4.

molly3478 · 19/02/2012 20:58

sorry thats suppose to be you get enough fruit for twice a day 5 times a weeks worth of snacks for a fiver.

claig · 19/02/2012 21:03

Good advice molly, but I wouldn't touch quorn even if they gave it away and paid me to eat it.

BoffinMum · 19/02/2012 21:04

I would agree with that but for people who don't have ready access to a lot of fresh food in bulk, or live near supermarkets that do good discounts, I would stand by the £100 a week thing (bear in mind that does include all your toiletries, day to day medicine type things and house cleaning gear).

BoffinMum · 19/02/2012 21:05

I can't stand quorn either, and it isn't filling. Give me lentils over quorn any day.

molly3478 · 19/02/2012 21:08

100 seems like an extortionate amount even with toiletries and cleaning products in but I suppose it depends on who you know and hang around with. I cant see many people I know being able to afford that kind of money. If you havent got the money you have to make time to find cheap food regardless of if you both work as there is not much else you can do.

BoffinMum · 19/02/2012 21:10

One thing that also became clear on a previous thread about what people spend on shopping is the massive regional variations in food costs. We think it's all pretty similar, but actually some regions have access to much better value food than others.

claig · 19/02/2012 21:11

Yes, lentils are excellent and very healthy, I'm not sure about quorn.

BoffinMum · 19/02/2012 21:13

I think we should take this over to another thread as it's not related to the Currie thing, but my last word on it would be that £15-£25 per week per person is the necessary amount for household shopping depending on the age of the people concerned, their levels of physical activity, and which part of the country they live in.

molly3478 · 19/02/2012 21:14

Im in south boffn mum in a place where most people are on mimimum wage however its down south and very expensive. houses are 13 x average income.

you just learn to save money as if u have to then you have to. Iceland for instance do bags of apples or bananas for a pound.

molly3478 · 19/02/2012 21:17

Sorry yeah x post but just saying that I supoose people who arent use to living on less dont understand. Its the same as edwina currie, not saying you think like that at all but people with money think things like spending 100 a week on food and toiletries is normal but it is a lot for many people can ever aspire to.

ravenAK · 19/02/2012 21:21

My (generally very tolerant of idiots) dad sat on a couple of committees with EC back in the 80s, I think it was.

He has a Special Face he does whenever her name is mentioned - imagine Kenneth Williams slamming his thumb in a car door.

Although, being a fair minded chap, he always adds '...she was right about the bloody eggs mind you' Grin.

BrianCoxHasScaryHair · 19/02/2012 21:40

boffin thanks for the link Smile

lunaticow · 19/02/2012 22:00

The woman is obviously rather thick. Remember what she said about old people wearing hats in the cold and salmonella and eggs. Enough said!

BoffinMum · 19/02/2012 22:37

In the Iceland near me there's very little food that isn't processed and hardly any fresh food, and if you hit the Aldi nearby at the wrong time the shelves can be bare in there (of fresh food). My mother, on the other hand, is a big fan of her local Lidl, which has fantastic fruit and veg (apparently). The nearest Lidl to us is about 30 miles away. I don't even think this is a north/south thing, it's a lot more random than that, to do with local competition and so on.

BoffinMum · 19/02/2012 22:38

Edwina is a great one for thinking she always knows better.

In the clip, she talks about 'clubs' and it becomes apparent she means catalogue clubs where you pay £3 a week or whatever for things on tick to a local representative. Do they still exist?

ThePinkPussycat · 19/02/2012 22:51

Yes put some by for a rainy day, and for your pension, and for the heath insurance you're going to need if the government gets its way...

BoffinMum · 19/02/2012 22:57

Ultimately we either have to have lower taxation so people can provide for themselves (which includes lower VAT), or we have to keep taxation at current levels and let the state help out. At the moment we seem to be having the worst of both worlds.

I would choose the higher tax route, btw. The thought of attempting to rely on a US-style bloated healthcare system makes me shudder.

claig · 19/02/2012 23:05

It sounds like Ed Balls wants tax cuts. He'll be joing the Tory party if he carries on like this.

molly3478 · 19/02/2012 23:06

Even with lower tax people wont have enough money. I only get taxed and national insurance 17 quid a month however I need more than that in tcs for childcare etc. Tax credits arent really giving you back your tax as if you are on low wages even if you work quite a few hours you dont really pay much tax/ni

MissLofPubia · 20/02/2012 00:09

The daft bint also claimed that 'good christians don't get aids' didn't she? x

MollyBroom · 20/02/2012 00:17

I think we have a distinct lack of MPs from ordinary "working class" backgrounds, this applies to all the parties. They have no idea about how ordinary people live.

KalSkirata · 20/02/2012 14:19

Our Iceland dont do fruit or veg at all.

ppeatfruit · 20/02/2012 17:22

Sorry claig were you saying that the economic mess we're in was not of the Tories making or not of this governments' making?

Because of course you are aware that the sainted Thatcher DEREGULATED THE BANKS and the worship of bloated plutocrats (most of whom avoid paying tax BTW and are given bonuses bigger than the income of some small countries) continued under all the next governments 'tis true but THE TORIES ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE MESS WE"RE IN NOW.
