This is the saddest "cuts" story I've read to date.

Those poor girls, and their poor babies. And in the general scheme of things the money is peanuts.

I know things are tough, but we're the 4th largest economy in the world (and I can't see how privatising the NHS is going to save money long-term, either - hardly like the US model is any kind of advert for cost-effectiveness). I just can't believe we're abandoning the most vulnerable in society as we are.

I will have forgotten very important stuff, and brilliant comments, for which I am sorry.

I suppose the question is now, is there the collective will to carry on with this as some sort of campaign, or shall people donate as individuals. (Or both, of course.)

Perhaps a poll is in order, is that technofeasible? Or even needed. I don't know. I am fatigued. Opinions, please.

Bossybritches22 · 09/02/2012 23:44

Klepto brilliant round-up.

I'm still waiting for futher info from Naomi house so those wishing to donate as part of this campaign just hold fire for a bit till we find out more about where & how much would be useful, realistically. It maybe that the closing down process is too far down the line to halt ,it occured to me today, they may have sold the house.Sad

Obviously feel free to donate individually if you wish!

I will ring them tomorrow if I've had no response. It could just be they are snowed under with emails following the articles in 2 major papers and the tweets etc.

Watch this space but keep up the publicity & info spreading. Grin

Kleptronic · 10/02/2012 00:02

Nice one. Momentum, lines in the sand, if not us then who, other such hackneyed phrases. Everyone deserves a chance, everyone. Those bairns deserve well mothers, those women deserve a life. I am so sick of it. Billions squandered on nothing, another 50 billion on quantative easing, whatever the fuck that is, sheesh I am sweary ranting and must go do bed. G'night all.

TheHumancatapult · 10/02/2012 04:57

I do think it is a Shane if this place has to close and hope they can find aveay

But and don't just mean on Mn I find it sad that people are willing to campaign for this but the cuts for DLA the cuts in equipment the respite centes that are closing are being swept under the carpets

TheHumancatapult · 10/02/2012 06:07

just out of intrest how many read about this in a national paper or national news www.donnasdreamhouse.co.uk/#/recent-news/4528291626

Yes donation have come in but it been word of mouth through sn groups to .I would not have known if I did not know people who use it

scottishmummy · 10/02/2012 07:22

Pragmatically Naomi hse needs to show it's costs and outcomes are within public sector parameters
Cost per client
Clinical efficacy
Staff costs
Overall outcomes
Destination/outcome women on discharge

Could this work be replicated elsewhere at lower cost?
As hard as it is, emotive campaigns aren't enough

Demonstrating the efficacy, outcome and cost of the project, why la and nhs should use it is more compelling and more likely to succeed. And will maybe secure ongoing funding

Given funding goes on tender basis Naomi hse need to demonstrate now and future why they are cost effective and should get funding ongoing

Bossybritches22 · 10/02/2012 07:43

scottishmummy -quite right which is why I'm waiting to hear from the staff at NH themselves to ensure any help we give is effective.

humancatapult sadly we can't all support everything and the cuts are hitting everyone, but it's not a competition I wish we could help all charities that are having to cut back on vital work, and all those who are losing vital benefit support too.

crazynanna · 10/02/2012 07:48

Shall I hold on before donating until we have a clearer picture of closure then?
Got paid today so will put some aside.

scottishmummy · 10/02/2012 08:05

Bb objectively you need to hear the la and nhs pov
Naturally Naomi hse will have a specific pov
Dig about the nhs/la decision
A 23mth pathway at NH does seem long.it's a big ask

TheHumancatapult · 10/02/2012 09:07

bossy

just to point put im not even talking benefit suport .

Im talkinhg essentail equipment 5 months for wheelchairs .Respite centres

Yes it is sad somewhere like this is cloing but how often do you read about respite centres closing down see link to Donnas dream house this supports 100s of children and familys and it did not even make the nationals

TheHumancatapult · 10/02/2012 09:08

all im saying is theres more upraor about this than a lot of other stuff that is happening and i think it is a sad thing that some stuff is picked up by the media raher than other stuff

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 10/02/2012 09:31

These young women are exactly the sort of parents that the NSPCC are stigmatising 'raising awareness' about in their latest campaign. They don't appear to be doing anything remotely as effective or useful as Naomi House.

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 10/02/2012 09:34

I'm happy to donate too - it would be good to know exactly what their shortfall is and whether there's still time to save the project.

Bossybritches22 · 10/02/2012 16:27

Ok I have had a reply from Josie at NH. It seems definite that the unit will close but they hope to re-visit the concept in the future. However the same principles will be carried into the community which might actually (IMO) reach more mums/children in the community possibly & be more cost effective in this current climate. The main thing, I feel, is that the support for these ladies is not being totally withdrawn so I hope you all feel you can still support.

I'm going to C&P the email in a minute for you all to read & then we can see how the majority of you would like to take this idea forward.

Bossybritches22 · 10/02/2012 16:56

Dear MN-ers

Thank you so much for your fantastic messages of support. We are blown away by the passionate response on Mumsnet and Twitter to the news of Naomi House's closure and by the generosity of your bloggers' offers. I know that Mumsnet has a lot of impact politically and socially, so feel very proud to have you notice our plight and get behind us!

I've attached some further info on our charity and on Naomi House and some stories from 2 of the mums we support. In short, Naomi House is definitely closing, due to more complex financial difficulties than The Guardian's cuts article may have implied, but One25 is committed to continue helping over 300 women and their families in Bristol through our other services: night outreach, drop-in centre and specialist caseworkers. We need your support to help:

?mums who have left Naomi House or whom we supported in the community to stay off the streets, learn parenting and life skills and keep their children
?pregnant women who desperately need our help to leave their damaging streets lifestyle in time to keep their baby safely
?women who's children have been taken into care, to escape the streets, drugs, etc and to be reunited with their children, either getting them back in their care or back in regular positive contact
?women who are not yet mums to escape the streets, get off drugs, etc and then be supported in becoming the best mums they can be - helping them with their own issues of childhood abuse (nearly all of our beneficiaries suffered abuse, particularly sexual abuse as children, many were taken into care), boosting their self-esteem and breaking down barriers such as stigma so they can access community support e.g. mums and tots groups, education with creche facilities, etc
?children who come to our mums and kids Christmas parties, summer outing (for many their only trips out of Bristol) and are reunited with their mums, grandmothers, etc and kept safe

One of the mums we support with parenting told us 'I'm working so hard to be the best parent I can be now. I love playing with my daughter, teaching her things - she's so bright. I've got routine, support and guidance but if I didn't have you I wouldn't have been able to do it. It's so important to know she's going to grow up and thrive and we can spend the rest of our lives together. Now I have the right training, I know I can do it'

We would absolutely love to have your support in raising donations to support our work. Our work with this most marginalised, vulnerable group of women costs around £540,000 a year to run and saves many lives. While the number of women we support to escape the streets is increasing and our work with women and their families in recovery is ever on the up, we are facing an increasing struggle to raise enough money to keep this vital work with women and their families going

?If you could flag up to the mums our online giving page or to send cheques to One25 at the address below to support our work that would be incredible

?Fundraising events - we would love to talk with you about this. Some groups do clothes swops, auctions, garden parties, etc. One mums group in Bristol raised a lot with a dinner and dance do recently for us which was incredible. We can give full support with this
?Campaigning - we would love to use your political and social clout to improve the lot of pregnant women, mums and would-be mums in our community. We also strive to put their needs on the agenda of politicians, commissioners and organisations locally who could improve access issues and the quality of services to this group.

Thanks so much for your support.

Thank you so much for your fantastic messages of support for One25 and our Naomi House project in particular. We are blown away by your passionate and generous response to the news of NH's closure. I know that Mumsnet has a lot of impact politically and socially, so feel very proud to have you notice our plight and get behind us!

Naomi House is definitely closing, due to more complex financial difficulties than The Guardian's cuts article may have implied. It costs c£240,000 a year (though as you say, saves millions of pounds yearly) for up to 16 families to stay there - and we've had just funding for 5 families from social services: sadly this service is so unusual (only 1 other drug treatment for mums with babies in England) that their systems aren't yet set up to fund this much-needed type of service. It's not in their current funding agenda (adult-only treatment is, removal of baby is, but not this) and it's not how they work - at the moment, social work with mothers and work with their children is organised by different social service departments in each council, each of which has different priorities to each other and to Naomi House. Bristol City Council has been extremely supportive and helped some families get funding, but for others, especially those coming from other councils, it just hasn't happened and One25 have had to self-fund these families to go to Naomi House and have the chance to stay together until we just couldn't afford to any more.

One25 is still committed to helping over 300 women and their families in Bristol through our other services: night outreach, drop-in centre and specialist caseworkers. We need your support to help the mums and children who have left Naomi House and need ongoing care. We need your help with pregnant women who can no longer turn to Naomi House but who our caseworkers can help to get off the streets, access pre-natal support and learn parenting skills. We would love you to support mums with children in care who are desperate to reunite with them and give them the love they deserve. Please also support our work with many more women who need to escape the streets first before they can become stable, supportive mums with a good home for their children. (for many this is their greatest motivation).

Our work with these women costs around £540,000 a year, saving many lives and bringing families back together. One mum, Laura, told us ?If it wasn't for One25 I wouldn't be where I am today ? cleaned up, looking after my family and even going back to education! Without your support I definitely wouldn't be alive. You gave me hope when no one else cared about me?. At a post-drug treatment family reunion last year, the child's dad told us "I don't know what to say. Thank you for giving Jack his mum back". Sarah's just spent her first Christmas back with her 3 year old son, Jack, happily in her care.

Ways you can support more mums like Sarah and Laura

  • Donations at www.one25.org.uk/get_involved/index.php?id=1
  • Fundraising events - please email me at [email protected] or call 0117 9098831 to discuss how we can help you with this, whether its a clothes swap, dinner, auction, or whatever
  • Campaigning support - again please email me as I'd love to discuss how to bring the needs of these mums higher on the political agenda and social awareness!

Many, many thanks

Josie

online giving page -please say you're an MN-er if possible so we can see how much we raise!

(or d'you think it would be good to have a seperate fundraising page/account so we can say £x came from Mn-ers? )

Scroll down on the donation page to see more info.

Josie also sent me some histories & more info about how the charity works.

Too much to post on here,Grin but if you would like me to send it on, PM me your email address & I will forward the file to you.

I'll be back in a bit to see what you all think. I'm aware it's half-term & many of you are busy/going away but as this appears to be evolving into a long term support campaign there is no immediate rush.

If the majority of you agree then perfectstorm, Kleptronic & I will co-ordinate a few ideas and share them with you. Send us your thoughts either here or PM us.

You can make a donation now if you'd prefer, or help with fundraising either individually or as part of whatever we decide to do.

Let's harness this interest & support you lovely lot, MN is amazing !

Bossybritches22 · 10/02/2012 17:15

cross post with Josie!

caramelwaffle · 10/02/2012 17:16

Bump

perfectstorm · 10/02/2012 17:44

Bossybritches, you're amazing, thanks so much for all your efforts. You too, Kleptronic.

Josie thanks too for taking the time to post. I really hope Mumsnetters can help in some way.

It's appalling how many vulnerable people are being hit hard at the moment, and it's easy to feel helpless - if everyone tries to help a small project, then there will be a lot more support available for a lot more people, and at least something more will be being done, in such a frightening climate.

Indeed perfect hope the evening crowd find this! Grin

Lots of ideas needed.

scottishmummy · 10/02/2012 20:14

Josie why dont you consider an outreach model, maintain women in community tenancies

Or floating support model

Revisit your costs try be more financially appealing to trusts and local authorities. If it is genuinely costs then. You need to revisit your model reduce costs

Kleptronic · 10/02/2012 20:15

Woo! Marvellous.

Bossybritches22 · 10/02/2012 20:20
