This is the saddest "cuts" story I've read to date.

Those poor girls, and their poor babies. And in the general scheme of things the money is peanuts.

I know things are tough, but we're the 4th largest economy in the world (and I can't see how privatising the NHS is going to save money long-term, either - hardly like the US model is any kind of advert for cost-effectiveness). I just can't believe we're abandoning the most vulnerable in society as we are.

Lurkring??

Time for bed.....

Kleptronic · 09/02/2012 00:24

Brilliant. I am very glad that people want to donate. It's going to take more than that, though, to keep this place open, generous as that is. It's going to take some action to mobilise Mumsnet regulars/HQ for a concerted attempt at sustained fundraising/support. Or we can all Google them and Paypal them, seperately. What say you, people of Mumsnet, is this a thing worth actually organising for, or shall wonderfully kind and altruistic people lob one-off payments in their direction? I am wide open to flaming, I know (why be on here, if unprepared for it, and often richly deserved). I've been posting on here a couple of weeks, so have no clout/reputation/network/whatever. I know nothing of Mumsnet happenstances and fetishes and herstories or doings. I will finish what I start though. So, can anyone advise me on next steps? Anyone up for sustained, focused ire, which requires RW action?

Sarahplane · 09/02/2012 00:27

I'd donate.

Bossybritches22 · 09/02/2012 00:31

Count me in klep, I'll catch up in the morning. I'll message MNHQ on my way to bed to ask them to pop over here & comment.

perfectstorm · 09/02/2012 00:33

It took less than 12 hours for Mumsnet to get something on the lead story in most of the papers and on the breakfast news bulletins, when posters were really riled up and people started calling contacts in the media. I don't know how to get that going, though. Maybe post in chat? I wasn't thinking when I linked this, more than "Oh God, how awful" so I don't really know, but I don't think AIBU is the right place. Perhaps start with Chat, linked here if you think that's best, and then see the response there?

I would love to support this if there is some way to do it, because this is dire. And Mumsnet is, after all, about mothers. It would seem to be a good starting point.

Maybe ask people to pledge £2 a month, more if they can? Most can manage that unless in dire straits themselves. And then the charity would be able to see where they are, going forwards, and how feasible it all is. But I think drawing public attention to this is also essential - it's on the media radar already, but if people seem really angry/interested maybe it could be on it a little more loudly?

Now now, be fair. The state isn't funding that! It's all being funded by allowing overprivileged teenagers to do Outward Bound courses on it once in a blue moon, thus qualifying the project for charitable status under the private education loophole (a yacht for one family hasn't got a wide enough public benefit to qualify as charitable in purpose, so they needed a way to lever that in - expensive courses for young people to "learn to sail" does it). Which means that major corporate donors will want to be associated with such a prestigious project, and can therefore allocate chunks of their available charitable funds to it instead of, oh, a children's hospice. Because everyone knows money to the third sector from corporate donations is an infinite pool.

We're so bankrupt we can't fund anything for poor people. Just a wedding, a Jubilee, a yacht and the Olympics for the well off (or stinking rich).

OP posts:
Kleptronic · 09/02/2012 00:41

A yacht? I know nothing of this yacht or why we need one. Wikipedia tells me this is a recreational boat or ship. As a thing to sponsor and attract publicity, it could sail beyond the doors of whatever that aged band/book was blethering on about. Also, ta Perfect, it'a a ways to go.

I am going to bed, and taking my ebullient fanciful yearnings with me. See thee in the morning.

LineRunner · 09/02/2012 00:49

I have posted on the NSPCC thread to ask why the NSPCC can't do some good on the frontline and pledge some money to Naomi House in Bristol to actually help real babies, in the here and now.

Do please add your voice.

toomuchmonthatendofthemoney · 09/02/2012 01:03

I'm with you, sadly don't have samcam on speed dial but dammit if anyone does, kick ass. The economic argument makes sense above all. It'll save a lot more money long term than itll take to keep Naomi house open.

MidnightWorry · 09/02/2012 01:10

il donate, would be really happy to do so.

Im sure a small percentage of trident would sort them out for 10 years but there we are. Feeding Wankers "big society bull shit". Oh look, the little peasants are doing themselves.

Women and babies come first.

Im happy to get involved if I can

TerraNotSoFirma · 09/02/2012 01:12

I'd be happy to send £2 per month, I wonder what their monthly running costs are? Whoever is organising this PM me, I'll be happy to help with the organising as well as donating what I can.

Ozziegirly · 09/02/2012 02:53

I would happily send 2 pounds a month, totally worth it both financially and morally in my opinion.

chocolateyclur · 09/02/2012 03:08

Watching for updates

InWithTheITCrowd · 09/02/2012 07:16

I would donate.
Bump for the daytime crowd

KnottyLocks · 09/02/2012 07:32

Anyone on Twitter?

I've just tweeted with the #naomihouse hashtag to spread the word.

eagerbeagle · 09/02/2012 07:44

That's so so sad. Have posted a fb link commenting on it. Makes no financial sense either.

Bossybritches22 · 09/02/2012 07:50

Morning all I messaged MN last night asking for pointers but not sure if they'll have got it yet.

If we all use our contacts we could generate some fuss.

Those who twitter re-tweet that link ^^ upthread in the OP

Re-post the link on your FB page

Send a quick email to everyone in your address book.

Contact your MP however you can.

Bossybritches22 · 09/02/2012 07:51

CelticPromise · 09/02/2012 08:04

Finding it hard to express how I feel about this government. Rage doesn't cover it.

tasmaniandevilchaser · 09/02/2012 08:12

I've written to my MP (a very famous lady)

Kleptronic · 09/02/2012 08:13

Morning all, good progress, can the Guardian be contacted, anyone know anyone who can be mithered? If there's enough heat on here maybe they'd do a story on the response to the story. The journalist's name is Alexandra Topping.

Off to work, so mn blackout time.
