bochead · 03/02/2012 15:15

Sicily has rebelled and it's citizens are demanding the following:-

The arrest of all corrupt politicians

Reduction in the number of Parliamentarians

Removal of the provincial bureaucracy (local crooks), as most of these politicians have been there for over forty years

Drastic cuts in the salaries and privileges of Parliamentarians and Senators

Restricting politicians to only two terms in office

Does anyone else wish this could happen here?

Agree Claire although as much as I am happy to blame Berlusconi for all ills I don't think this is a trait only he possessed while in Government.

claireinmodena · 06/02/2012 12:38

Absolutely not! Its a practice older than the itslian republic! We havd never really moved on since feudalism LOL!
And yes Berlusconi is not thd root of all our problems, more like the perfect representation of all our shortcomings...

claireinmodena · 06/02/2012 12:39

But I also think his party has used certain dodgy practices more than others..

Francagoestohollywood · 06/02/2012 14:06

I agree gio and claire! Our current parlamento looks like a corte dei miracoli (how would you translate this?) Grin

love that description of Berlusca as the perfect representation of all our shortcomings - so true! vile orange creature!

claireinmodena · 06/02/2012 16:57

and don't forget the fake hair, that seems to be painted on his cranium.

Thanks Gio, Franca and Claire for explaining.

It's hard to understand from the POV of someone who has some knowlege of Italy and loves the country and my friends but from afar. There are some business acquaintances I like, and some I don't like but that's the same with everyone.

Anyway, I'm learning. thanks again Smile

I've just remembered this.

Was in Florence last month. The taxi drivers at the airport were on strike but only for about 10 minutes at a time so we waited.

The driver said he was paying a mortgage of 240,000 euros for his licence after fulfilling various tests. The payment period is over about 20 years and the idea was that it guaranteed a certain standard of driver. In return there'd be a limit to the approved number of drivers.

Monti has cancelled this and is giving out permits to anyone (job creation scheme/favours - don't know. Maybe that was the thinking behind the original deal). As far as I understood it the existing permit-holders can't get the payments they've made back. It might even be that they can't get out of the mortgages but I might not have understood that.
