OMG has anyone seen this "tell your loved ones they're fat" thing? Have these people ever experienced a family christmas?

Now luckily I don't see rellies any more at christmas, but when I did, if there was any possible way I could make the whole thing more tense and excruciating, it would be this

I mean I know there is an overweight problem and there's a place for a public health message but "health experts believe it [christmas] is the perfect time to tell a loved one they are overweight"??? Are they mad?

Really? Whoever thinks that fat people are so delusional that they need a "loved one" to put them right?

GypsyMoth · 22/12/2011 09:32

I can kind of see both sides to this!!

LePruneDeMaTante · 22/12/2011 09:35

That is a bit...desperate!
I can see what they're trying to do (encourage honesty and intelligent appraisal of the risks of being overweight?) but do they not know anything about, well, people?!

aStarOverMangerways · 22/12/2011 09:38

I wouldn't have thought Christmas was the right time to do it. It won't stop the scoffage, it will just make people feel shit about themselves.

However, I do also kind of see their point.

LadyWord · 22/12/2011 09:38

"Happy Christmas! By the way, I've noticed you're obese." Confused

I think it's a good thing.
My bil told me I was fat last Christmas, and up until that point I was completely unaware of it....I thought my clothing labels were wrong and when they said 20, they actually meant 12. I had no idea that I was roughly four stone overweight and the labels were correct!!

Anyway, it was brilliant - he advised me to eat less, and excersise more...and I was so grateful to him for the pointers. I had not realised it would be so simple!

He changed my life I can tell you. This year I am positively sylph-like and have just completed my first marathon. His observation made the world of difference to me, I can tell you!

I can't think of anything more likely to make people dive head first into a vat of bailey's/quality street.

like us fatties haven't noticed we're fat [hmmm]

zookeeper · 22/12/2011 09:45

lol Pictish

befuzzled · 22/12/2011 09:50

I can kind of see the point too some of my family are seriously in denial about being fat, think there're just a bit overweight, and massively over eat. I'm not going to tell them on christmas day though!

BoulevardOfBrokenSleep · 22/12/2011 10:20

Fantastic idea! Oh, wait... are we only supposed to say it to people who are actually overweight?

Cause I'd love to mess with (whippet-thin, marathon-running) BIL's mind by telling him he could stand to lose a few pounds. Just swap sugary drinks for water, mate, that'll do it!

OTOH, my Mum's been telling me I'm fat since before I actually was fat. I can assure you it really hasn't helped. Xmas Hmm

niceguy2 · 22/12/2011 12:24

Well it's better than telling them they're not fat when they obviously are.

FanjoForTheReindeerJumper · 22/12/2011 12:26

my mum and auntie tell me I am fat every time i see them, no need for any campaign

FanjoForTheReindeerJumper · 22/12/2011 12:26

its like "hello, you are looking fat today" Grin

yellowraincoat · 22/12/2011 12:30

lol pictish

Boulevard, that's exactly what I was thinking! I'm thinking of going round telling EVERYONE they're fat, just for fun. All the more roast potatoes for me!

moondog · 22/12/2011 12:31

Just the ticket to make sure things really go with a bang after about 10 glasses of wine.

AlmaWalkingInAWinterWonderland · 22/12/2011 12:32

Grin Pictish.

Like Boulevard, my parents have been telling how fat I was long before I was actually fat. It has never helped at all.

D'ya know, I'd love to! But I won't.

WHen I was overweight, I was well aware of it.

HecateGoddessOfTwelfthNight · 22/12/2011 12:34

merry christmas, fatty. Guess you ate all the mince pies.

Yes. I can quite see how that's going to make for a happy day.

We fatties know we're fat. Make no mistake about that. It's not like you're going to get the reply "I'm fat? FAT? DEAR GOD IN HOLY HEAVEN! When did that happen?"

The only thing that will happen is people will feel sad and humiliated in front of their family on christmas day.

Not a present I would wish to give or receive.

LePruneDeMaTante · 22/12/2011 12:35

I used to get "You're looking well. You've got a bit of meat on you. I didn't like to say, but you were too thin before." (I was a 10/12 perhaps.)

Different aim, same result Grin

moondog · 22/12/2011 12:36

A friend recently told me that in reponse to her relative asking her child what he wanted for Christmas, he replied with
'For you to lose some weight'.

Much shouting ensued. Grin

nethunsreject · 22/12/2011 12:38

I have to say though, that it is quite irksome (though not as much) to be told by (fat) relativvves that you are too skinny. Particularly when BMI is within normal range.
