So the verdict on the riots is in

Police should be able to use all means next time including live ammo.

Excuse me? so after the riots that where sparked by the shooting of an unarmed man, the toffs in charge of the review think it's a good idea for the police to shoot all those unruly serfs, should they dare do it again.

The day the police shoot a rioter will be the dawn of the revolution, when this system is smashed and the politicians dragged from their beds and lynched in the streets.

I do think on the whole tho the police have more sense then to do what we condemn so many others for doing.

That same 'unfairly targetted underclass' was certainly out in force the last day or two. Knifing to death a young bloke on Oxford Street, shooting an indian student point blank in the head in Salford. Don't think 'raising and addressing concerns' was the excuse this time. Don't think it's because they're affected by poverty either... the other standard roll-out for apologists. Don't think the police can be scapegoated. Murderous thuggery & criminality strikes once again.

PigletJohn · 27/12/2011 20:03

and how do you know who committed the shooting and stabbings, and what "class" they belong to?

Kewcumber · 27/12/2011 20:40

"I'm sure if I said to you in July there would be 3 days of rioting in London, with shops and cars burned etc you would think that was funny too as that would never happen."

Ummm, well I'm old enough to remember the last riots in London (and elsewhere in the UK) - its not a recent invention!

PigletJohn · 27/12/2011 22:12

poll tax, miners, blackshirts, anti-popery - there's no end.

Sidge · 27/12/2011 22:22

As far as I could see most of the looters and rioters were scummy thugs who just wanted something for nothing.

Pretty reflective of much of society really.

goodasgold · 27/12/2011 23:22

A young single mum had her flat set on fire, with her young ds inside. Her choice was to take him out to where the firestarters were, or to have him burn to death.

The police need to be able to control situations like this so that the mother and child are, and feel safe.

CogitoErgoSometimes · 28/12/2011 08:12

"and how do you know who committed the shooting and stabbings, and what "class" they belong to?"

I was quoting other posters to make an ironic point. The simplistic assumption of the apologists on this thread is that violent theft is OK because the people that commit it are not responsible... it's all the fault of (pick one) poverty, the police, the government. They can't distinguish right from wrong because they are 'unfairly targetted'. Utter bollocks.

Why does someone stab a man in broad daylight on a busy shopping street in full view of CCTV cameras?..... because they don't think they'll get caught.

RyokoTheRedNosedLamedear · 29/12/2011 01:01

No it's not because they don't think they will get caught it's because they don't care, they couldn't give a flying fuck if they get caught or not.

Ryoko, tell me, how did you gain this ability to know what is going on inside other people's heads?

RyokoTheRedNosedLamedear · 29/12/2011 01:06

Well for a start, talking to people is a good indication of what they think.

I must confess, I haven't spoken to many murderers recently.

RyokoTheRedNosedLamedear · 29/12/2011 01:20

Hmm I don't know 100% either way if I have or not, definitely knew/know a few repeat offenders, a few burglars, muggers, scammers etc.

my best mate when I was a kid got done for kidnapping, assault and threatening with an offensive weapon when he was still just a boy under 16.

So please spare me the silly patronising comments.

Which computer game are you reviewing at the moment Ryoko? If I remember correctly that's your job.

RyokoTheRedNosedLamedear · 29/12/2011 01:31

Haven't worked since having a child and I wasn't a reviewer.

The big problem is that we cannot trust the police to be responsible with firearms.

They have proven this so too many times in the past.
Some of them cannot even be trusted with the standard equipment, and the organisation as a whole cannot be trusted to not try to cover it up.

A good first step would be to fit all police guns with cameras which record the whole time. They could also (usually) have a live feed to an independent regulator of some sort.

End of the day, we need the police, but we need to be able to trust them, and we ought to be able to trust them completely.
We are a long way from that.
