Breaking News : Do you agree with a woman succeeding the throne?

Manathome · 28/10/2011 11:55

Commonwealth countries agree constitutional changes to remove gender discrimination in the order of succession to the British throne. Is this the start of an even slippery slope to mayhem in this country, or is it a positive thing?

I am confused with all the changes I face today, I now seem to be living in an alien country to the one I was born in, and I have had no choice in the matter.

It's just beyond funny to come on MN and ask if they agree with a women succeded to the throne

LeggyBlondeNE · 28/10/2011 12:39

sarah - re private wealth, it's the stuff the Queen has inherited as a member of the aristocracy rather than head of state so to speak. So for instance, I think, Windsor is hers but Buckingham Palace is a state residence. And I think she privately holds the revenues of the duchy of Lancaster? Like Charles holds the Duchy of Cornwall.

Basically, if we got rid of the monarchy we'd either have to have a full on French0style purge of aristos or she'd get to keep most of her houses and land and stuff same as the rest.

NhameCage · 28/10/2011 12:39

I love Manathome. In fact I'm thinking of a concept for a new out of town store based on him along the lines of Pets at Home. What could it sell? Those rubber gloves with a feather trim and 'pair of tits' aprons probably.

Bossybritches22 · 28/10/2011 12:56

oh yes NhameCage and probably stock bath towels with double ended witty messages like "face" & "arse"

Greythorne · 28/10/2011 12:56

Oh my good lord.
What a total spanner Simon Heffer is:

Does he mean that a man is going to take the crown????

I think this Manathome guy is funny! Can we keep him?

shineynewthings · 28/10/2011 13:10

The only thing I will say is that it does kind of mean that the odds are greatly amplified that no one else (uncles, cousins) will ever get a look in on ascending to the throne now. Say for example under current rules if will and kate had no son, and Harry did, then someone in harry's line could 'get it' I will this will render all the other fifth in line-to-the-throners etc completely redundant, not that they weren't before I suppose.

SansaLannister · 28/10/2011 13:20

FFS, is half-term over today?

KatAndKit · 28/10/2011 13:23

Typical Daily Mail bollocks. Have they not realised that the age of dynastic arranged marriages is over and the Royals are now tending to marry ordinary British people. All that what might have been is nonsense. History is in the past. Those things didn't happen.
I don't see how changing the rules will destabilise the crown. The crown is mostly pointless anyway. Since we have Parliament to sort out the country anyway, I don't think it will matter if Wills and Kate's hypothetical first born daughter decides to marry some Belgian prince. It is unlikely anyway. But really, what difference will it make to the rest of us? Will we be taken over by an army of Belgians? No.
