Dale Farm travellers-where have they gone?

Appuskidu · 19/10/2011 21:04

I presume, having looked at the news that most of the travellers have now actually left the site and it's mainly protesters/activists left. That'll be 80 traveller families on the move; where have they gone, has that been mentioned anywhere?!

Ireland?

QueenofJacksDreams which bit? That they should obey the law you mean?

DooinMeCleanin · 22/10/2011 14:13

I care very much about where they have gone and whether they have access to education and health services. This is probably because I view them as fellow human beings who happen to be travellers. It's a shame others can't manage the same.

I am seriously shocked at the amount of bigots on MN. I thought this site was meant to be full of educated people? It's very sad.

QueenofJacksDreams · 22/10/2011 14:20

"Who bloody cares? Good riddance."

"Probably back to their big houses in Ireland"

"Who cares?"

"I doubt they'll do it legally, though. That would mean you can't just rock up someplace and not pay for it."

Like those bits I mean onagar

SansaLannister · 22/10/2011 14:24

Couldn't care less what colour they are, Queen, so read all you want into it. A lawbreaker is a lawbreaker. They weren't living there legally, they knew it and did it any way, they got evicted. BFD, IMO. No one has the right to just live however they please illegally.

onagar · 22/10/2011 14:29

The group in question have demonstrated a disregard for the law and more recently a tendency to use violence to further their arms. That group deserves the contempt it now receives.

but that group is NOT "all travellers" just the people on the illegal part of Dale Farm. So racism doesn't come into it. Notice that those on the legal part are of course allowed to stay there.

onagar · 22/10/2011 14:37

btw I looked at a bunch of people who were breaking the law and saw a bunch of people who were breaking the law.

If you immediately thought "Ah a different race" then I suggest that you might want to examine more closely the way you place people into categories.

QueenofJacksDreams · 22/10/2011 14:55

I am the last person to care what colour or whatever people are, I think maybe you're the one who needs to start looking at their own problems regarding race and stop being so defensive.

TalkinPeace2 · 22/10/2011 14:57

it is not a race issue
they are Irish - white, celtic origin, same as many many tax paying rate paying law abiding people all over the UK
its the fact that they want everything and wish to contribute nothing that is the problem
not where they were born

edam · 22/10/2011 14:59

I read in the paper that the council is making the legal residents move out as well, claiming they need to go while the illegal parts are destroyed/whatever it is they are doing. That does seem unfair.

onagar · 22/10/2011 15:21

edam, I hadn't heard that. I suppose it could be true that they need the area clear for safety reasons while work goes on, but in that case they must offer them temporary accommodation and even compensation.

Even though I might have a feeling those on the legal bit contributed to the problem we have to give them the benefit of the doubt.

"We are advised on traveller culture and to be sensitive to that, not that they may need our services but they are available if wanted/needed."

Birdsgottafly In practice, what does this mean? Based on my own experience (a year living surrounded by Travellers) I fear that this cultural sensitivity allows unacceptable aspects of that culture to go unchallenged - including misogyny and domestic violence.

Birdsgottafly · 22/10/2011 20:38

SW's cannot charge in and change the world , as much as they would like to.

What i was refering to was more to do with the fact they do like to live in an insular fashion and are not generally happy with outside interference.

We would like to advise that stability is needed for the vulnerable, but preaching that to a group of people that have just been evicted, is a bit pointless. We cannot force them into taking up hostel places and apply for HA houses or residential care for their elderly, the advice and support needs to be tailored.

For DV to 'flag' up it has to be reported by the person experiencing it or a witness. If this happens then any culture will not be treated any differently than someone 'born and bred' in the area. However, the reaity is that there is silence and if pushed to confront it, they flee.

Non school attendance or a non level of appropriate home education also will not be overlooked.

WhollyGhost · 23/10/2011 08:10

Thanks Birdsgottafly that makes sense. I truly admire you for doing this work.

When I tried (not hard enough, I was scared) to intervene on behalf of two little girls who were plainly being neglected and abused, I was told, by their headmaster, that the family would probably flee once social workers were involved. And that is indeed what happened.

Which is why I get irritated by the pompous stupidity of those who glorify Traveller culture and want it to be set in aspic, ensuring that the vulnerable remain unprotected, and the voices that are heard are those speaking on behalf of the men who control Traveller communities.

WhollyGhost - well said

I've no idea, I stopped posting on these threads, and on Mumsnet generally because my posts were being deleted. I am not racist, but I am interested in Traveller culture, and particularly in the behaviour and influence of "the millionaires".

If you want a nosy at some of the houses in Rathkeale, where the Dale farm group are based, search for "Roches road, Rathkeale, Limerick" on google maps

The barred up houses are extraordinary, but IIRC the most astonishing mansions, owned by the Rathkeale Travellers, were on the outskirts of the town.

here is a bit more on Rathkeale:

I wouldn't wipe my arse with the Sunday World, just a shout out to any MNers who would believe the trip they peddle.

stottie · 01/11/2011 20:52
