See how well you do!

I am a Disgrace - I only got 12/24 - good job I've already left the country! Grin

Oh, and when you've done it, click on Show Answers to see what you should have said :)

I got 15. I'm not sure the historical ones, such as when could women divorce, have much relevance. Surely it's more important to know about big historical events that have shaped our country?

ThePsychicSatsuma · 12/10/2011 13:23

I got 12. Pleased I knew 646 / Hansard etc.

what the relevance of the driving question is I don't know

Thzumbiewitch · 12/10/2011 13:30

the speed limit one? I think that's pretty important, actually! the way some people drive, definitely.... Hmm

OP posts:
BlueKangaroo22 · 12/10/2011 13:34

8....

nickelbabe · 12/10/2011 13:37

I knew the census one from watching Who Do You Think You Are?, but it's not relevant to my life.

The speed limit one is only relevant if you're a driver.
I knew the constituencies one by working it out (i remembered that last year when we had the crappy-result election that one party had to get at least 32something seats to be in control.
(one over half the number of seats available)
but had we had a straigth-forward result, I would not have known that now.
Fair enough askign questions about the relevancy of the commons and the lords, but number ofseats?

I got 11 the first time, then I went back and got 13 - but because I didn't know which guesses were wrong, I got 1 wrong that i'd got right the first tiem.

Hulababy · 12/10/2011 13:38

Maybe we shoudk create the MN guide to Life in the UK with its own test instead - probably be far more relevant to every day life!

KatAndKit · 12/10/2011 13:39

I think if you pass this test you should get a free A level after all the history study you would need to do to get enough points!

norriscoleforpm · 12/10/2011 13:42

16 - that's it I'm off to live in Portugal..

Iggly · 12/10/2011 13:46

16!

Stupid questions.

What loser wrote them?! I don't care whether wannabe immigrants know about the history of divorce or the census. What a load of madness.

Thzumbiewitch · 12/10/2011 13:46

I like the idea of creating our own test, that's for sure! Especially with an MN bias...

If you cannot find a parking space in the local supermarket but you see a disabled space, you are entitled to park there "just for 5 minutes" without a blue badge
True
False

If you have a massive unwieldy buggy on a bus with heaps of shopping and a wheelchair user wishes to get on, do you
A) fold your buggy so they can use the space
B) refuse to fold your buggy because you have a babay and all that shopping and you were there first
C) whinge about the entitlements that people with disabilities have and why aren't they in their free car anyway

Is it legal to breastfeed in public in the UK?
Yes
No

That should do for starters!

16 here too. The ones I got wrong were all the numbers ones.

RunsWithScissors · 12/10/2011 13:55

Aced it, but had to do it for indefinite leave to remain last year ;-) there is a study guide to go through, and I think there is a LOT of relevant info (study guide outlines the school system, NHS, employment issues/rights, rights of women, and lots of everyday things). The test of 24 random questions (comes from a database of hundreds), isn't really reflective of all the material you cover in studying for the test. but I do question the need to know EXACT percentages of population make up in regards to religion etc. Important to know a general idea, but I was sweating trying to recall some #s

WidowWadman · 12/10/2011 14:06

I've got 19/24. Can't afford doing it in real life, though :(

Thzumbiewitch · 12/10/2011 14:08

Do you need to do it then, Widow? Confused

OP posts:
KatAndKit · 12/10/2011 14:13

I'd offer to do it for you but you would probably get deported! I am in awe of anyone who can manage all this whilst learning English as a foreign language. The study guide must be awfully dull and hard to get through if you are not a native speaker.

Thzumbiewitch · 12/10/2011 14:25

Whoo! I've just done the Official Practice Test that is in the link at the beginning of the article, as opposed to the one that is shown on the Grauniad's page - and got 22/24! Admittedly, I had gleaned some of the answers from doing the Gruaniad's version and answer-checking but I'm still quite pleased! The two I got wrong were 2 part answers as well - got one part right and one wrong in each case.

OP posts:
Thzumbiewitch · 12/10/2011 14:26

You can get your test summary when you've done that as well, and it tells you which page the answer could be found on in the Handbook.

LadyWellian · 12/10/2011 14:45

I got 16 - a fail. I take issue with this one though:

  1. Is the statement below TRUE or FALSE: you can attend a hospital without a GP's letter only in the case of an emergency

Correct answer: True

You answered: False

Bollocks is it true. If you have an appointment WITH THE HOSPITAL they are hardly going to turn you away because your GP hasn't given you a note.

LaWeasel · 12/10/2011 14:49

I got 11 too.

Good job my mum was born here and I don't have to take the test... and no wonder my dad still isn't a citizen!

Thzumbiewitch · 12/10/2011 14:50

I thought they were talking about a GP referral, LadyW, rather than a "note from me doctor", as it were. In general, you can't get an appt directly with the hospital without going through either your GP or A&E.

OP posts:
gallicgirl · 12/10/2011 14:50

I thought it meant that you can't book directly with the hospital. You have to be referred via your GP in the first instance.

nickelbabe · 12/10/2011 14:54

Lady - i agree with you - it reads as "in any instance" - ie, you can only get a hospital appt if you get a GP referral.

lovingthecoast · 12/10/2011 14:58

But you can also be referred by a midwife can you not? I was, after spotting. Hadn't seen the GP in about 18mths.

wahwahwah · 12/10/2011 14:59

10 oops.

nickelbabe · 12/10/2011 15:00

very good point, coast - and in our town, you don't even go to the midwife through the GP - you make an appointment with her directly at the hospital.
in fact, when I rang the GP to tell them I was pg, they basically went "and so? why do we care? tell the midwife at the hospital"
