What were Preston Crown Court playing at today when they deemed it acceptable to let this pair of sadists off so lightly?

HERE

It is incredibly shocking. Have been following this story as I live within the area and it has featured in the local press regularly plus a friend of mine was one of the people that were 'duped' by the mother Sad

I honestly thought they deserved much longer sentences and naively thought that they would...am so Shock that they only got 2.5 years for what they did.

Will be sending an e-mail pronto.

abendbrot · 12/10/2011 21:11

Great ceebee - perhaps you could pass the details and complaint format to your local friends too? I feel for your friend - she must be absolutely devastated that she wasn't able to do anything.

Graham Wood QC, defending Mohammed Karolia, said: "He firmly believes that what happened with the loss of the baby was God's punishment for his lack of commitment to Islam. I'm not sure Allah would agree with that statement.

Morning bump. I wonder whether it would be worth posting a link to this somewhere busier? this place is not as often vistited as chat or AIBU.

abendbrot · 13/10/2011 10:35

Just started a new thread in AIBU - thanks rips, good idea.

I have sent a letter.

Smile Posie - makes you feel a bit less helpless doesn't it.

Thanks for bringing this to my attention.

ripstheirthroatoutliveupstairs · 13/10/2011 12:43

Don't want to be arsey (and judging by the current one about a petition it may not be wise) but I couldn't see it.

ripstheirthroatoutliveupstairs · 13/10/2011 13:04

Blush sorry, I've just seen it and seen the pasting people are trying to give you.
Must go out now I'm afraid but will be back later on.

abendbrot · 13/10/2011 13:05

It's there somewhere rips. I'm not worried about getting heaps of people and emails sent. This is just an opportunity for people to either choose to act, or to choose to let it lie.

To me it's a point of principle to put to use the democratic processes we have within in our legal system.

BerylOfLaughs · 13/10/2011 13:22

Done.

Here's a cut and paste of the email putting all the info together. Make sure you put your name and address at the bottom so that they know these are from separate people and not one person with lots of email addresses.

I object to the sentence handed down to Mohammed and Nafisa Karolia, of Meadow Close, Blackburn at Preston Crown Court on 10th October 2011.
They were convicted of child cruelty (resulting in the death of a 7 month old baby).

I object to this lenient sentence on several grounds:

  1. I believe these two are dangerous criminals. The vulnerable are not safe with these two at large in society. I believe they should be given an indefinite sentence in the same way that Baby P's abusers were.
  1. I also object because this sends out a message to adults that abuse of the vulnerable is not punished severely and will encourage them to continue.
  1. It sends a message to nations around the world that the British legal system considers child abuse and murder to be a sad tragedy rather than violent crime against a vulnerable person.
  1. Any children who are currently being abused and hear this news will not be sleeping soundly tonight.

Please look into this matter.

Yours sincerely

Great Beryl - if others would re-word their emails it would have even more impact. My writing style is not the best in any case, not the best to copy...

Email sent. Sad

aStabbingStrangleways · 13/10/2011 14:42

I have emailed. Thanks for the info on how to do so; it certainly makes me feel a tiny bit less helpless.

abendbrot · 13/10/2011 16:28

Dolly, aSS Thanks Smile

Sorry, just realised my Halloween namechange isn't very appropriate on this thread! Blush

Grin! Hence the abbreviation!

OP posts:

quick bump - writing to the Attorney General may have an effect on the undue leniency of this case.

OP posts:
you · 14/10/2011 10:57

Done. But just to clarify, I didn't think the charge was child cruelty resulting in death? As far as I'm aware the child died of something completey unrelated, to do with her breathing, but it was after she died they found out about the abuse during post mortem and investigation.

abendbrot · 14/10/2011 18:16

If you want the details:

Twin M died after suffering numerous unexplained injuries including fractures to the ribs, legs and arms and skull damage affecting the brain and central nervous system.
She also had a mouth ulcer, unexplained scratching to the ears, bleeding in the eyes and injuries to the nose that were "unusual", with damaged tissue suggesting it had been pinched with equal force on both sides by a clasp or clip.
The bone breakages were said to have taken place between 24 hours and six weeks before death, while a postmortem examination found she died of bronchopneumonia

mathanxiety · 14/10/2011 18:39

Wouldn't you feel really demoralised if you were a police officer who had dealt with this crime (or others like it), seeing that joke of a sentence.
