I'm sure there's a perfectly reasonable explanation for it all and I look forward to hearing it at 2.30pm today.

Two other people involved in Werrity's 'security consultancy' are Iain Stewart and Laura Sandys who were elected as Conservative MPs at the last election.

I am a Labour supporter and shamefacedly accept Labour greed and fuckwittery but for heaven's sake, don't hand it to me on a plate, people.

It's all just a shame. He seemed honest.

MooncupGoddess · 11/10/2011 10:12

Can't resist the temptation to post this hilariously fawning Torygraph article about the Fox wedding:

So he married just before the Tory leadership election? What exquisite timing.

Wonder if Adam Werritty joined them on that romantic trip to Carcasonne where Liam popped the question?

OP posts:
Ponders · 11/10/2011 12:16

& even the fawning article includes this - which reads rather oddly Wink

'"I shall be moving to Somerset," she insists, dispelling the rumours that she may continue to live in Glasgow after the wedding. She has taken the rumours, widely assumed to be clumsy attempts to question her fiancé's sexuality, in her stride.'

Ponders · 11/10/2011 12:42

\link{http://www.thefirstpost.co.uk/85660,news-comment,news-politics,why-liam-fox-is-dogged-by-gay-insinuations-\lots of fab quotes here!}

'How and why they met is delightfully unclear.'

'a wedding that took place against a background of gossip, innuendo ? or 'up yer endo' as they like to say in Fleet Street on these occasions'

'"Why would a 43-year-old man wish to spend several hours getting smashed with a gang more than 20 years his junior?"'

'When Forsyth asked a political ally of Fox's to explain how the Defence Secretary had got himself into his current pickle, he received the response: "Because he's a reckless bastard with no judgment."'

KatharineClifton · 11/10/2011 14:04

Ah.

SpringHeeledJack · 11/10/2011 14:11

gosh! I like to think of myself as pretty shrewd, but all this never crossed my mind

edam · 11/10/2011 14:32

It's really sad that he felt the need to cover up his real sexuality to such an extent. OR really weird that despite being married, straight and in his 40s he has such a strange relationship with his 'friend' and likes partying with students he's just met. Presumably he felt he wouldn't get the leadership had he said 'btw, I'm not interested in the ladies'.

At any rate, none of this would have been our business had he not started inviting his best mate to the MoD, on business trips abroad and to meetings with defence contractors.

slug · 11/10/2011 15:36

The sexuality thing is an issue if only because of his Catholic beliefs appear to influence him enough to vote for any restriction to women's reproductive rights, but somehow don't extend to his own behaviour. Bloody hypocrite.

CatIsSleepy · 11/10/2011 17:02

i don't care whether liam fox is gay
i do care that his mate has been insinuating himself into meetings here there and everywhere that he had no business to be in, swanning around claiming to be Fox's adviser when he was no such thing. What was Werrity actually getting out of it?
and Fox's 'apology' was laughable.
Cameron should sack him, the man has behaved like an idiot and clearly has very questionable judgement.

Ponders · 11/10/2011 17:04

What was Werrity actually getting out of it?

exactly. & who was paying for all his travel & accommodation?

MooncupGoddess · 11/10/2011 17:34

I do wonder if some men actually like having a little wifey at home, and a boyfriend on the side for fun adventures.

Apparently Werritty admitted to a fondness for first class, and his trips would have cost a minimum of £50,000:

starrywillow · 11/10/2011 17:55

William Hague? Absolutely nothing was proven about William Hague and the ridiculous article I read on that made me withdraw my subscription from the Independent Immediately, in disgust.

starrywillow · 11/10/2011 18:01

There is also as yet no proof at all that LF is having a relationship with his friend. People can have very close friendships without their sexuality having anything to do with it so I don't see the point in condemning him for that, that's rather jumping the gun.

MooncupGoddess · 11/10/2011 18:12

I don't think anyone is condemning Liam Fox for his sexuality (and of course there's nothing wrong with being gay, though his previous homophobic comments do him no favours here). The problem is his abuse of his position. Whether he's shagging Werritty or they're just best mates, his behaviour has been appalling and broken the Ministerial Code in several ways.

William Hague on the other hand didn't commit any abuse of his position, except possibly appointing a special adviser without a proper recruitment process. I myself don't believe that anyone as senior as Foreign Secretary would share a hotel room with an aide 'to save money', but it's not really a matter of public interest.

limitedperiodonly · 11/10/2011 18:21

Mooncup said all I wanted to say.

OP posts:
starrywillow · 11/10/2011 18:21

People on here are condemning him for being gay and voting in a particular way when they don't know he is gay.

And I have shared rooms with friends and beds with friends at hotels without it having anything to do with sexuality. I don't understand why as soon as someone discovers two men are great friends, they must be sleeping together. In my experience, friendships of the same sex can be amazingly intimate but not sexual. Is it also assumed that the Chancellor and the Prime Minister are sneaking through each other's doors in the middle of the night just because they are god fathers to each other's children?

limitedperiodonly · 11/10/2011 18:28

People are mostly asking questions about whether Adam Werritty enjoyed financial advantages related to his friendship with Liam Fox.

And also why Fox thought it appropriate for a person who was not employed by the MoD, the Government or the Conservative party to accompany him on official business, mislead people about being an official advisor and have access to MoD premises and staff without security clearance.

What is your opinion on that?

OP posts:
starrywillow · 11/10/2011 18:40

I think that facts can be twisted to sound worse than they are. I don't know enough about what AW does to know why he would be all around the world but that doesn't mean that he doesn't have reason. If I was working all over the world and my best friend was also working all over the world, I would try and meet up with her wherever I could. Some of those times might be in my free time on official visits and some might be holidays, the point is we don't know how it worked here. LF has denied any financial gain, if that's true, then that's the main problem out of the way. People do know people all around the world sometimes. If Andy Coulson had met DC on a trip somewhere he could have set up a meeting for him from his own contacts, that seems plausable to me in this case too.

I think that there are still things to be examined about the issue but that we will have to wait until there is a statement following Sir Gus's interrogation/investigation and until then it's all just speculation. Unfortunately it's daily Fail type speculation, mostly.

limitedperiodonly · 11/10/2011 19:01

Yeah, you're probably right.

I never thought of it that way.

Thanks.

OP posts:
MooncupGoddess · 11/10/2011 19:29

But would you have invited your best friend to an important work meeting? I can't see that going down well in any line of business. If LF had just met AW for a drink when he was off duty there wouldn't be an issue here (remember that this came to public notice after AW was pictured in a meeting with Liam Fox and the Sri Lankan government).

GeorgeEliot · 11/10/2011 20:53

rumours that LF is gay have been around for a long time:

www.pinknews.co.uk/news/articles/2005-134.html/

starrywillow · 11/10/2011 21:00

It depends what my interest was. I've been to court and sat in the gallery at a trial while my best friend was on works experience there. My bum hurt and it was for two weeks all day long, but I did it. Looking back now, I'm not sure why. Grin

Rumours that people are gay are always around. I think people should mind their own business in general. This isn't the same because there are questions to be answered, but usually, the red tops take great interest in spreading rumours and trying to wreck marriages. I don't support it.

pointydog · 11/10/2011 22:37

It's not to do with him being gay.
