... because what is basically gay marriage is legal this week.

And no one REALLY minds.

Which makes me very appreciative that I live in this country.

(Just looking at the pictures of the small group of protesters outside Belfast city hall protesting over the lesbian marriage of two women - they are holding up banners saying "SODOMY IS A SIN" - hmmm! Sodomy?)

Why MP, are you gay?

TIREDofwrappingpressiesEMMA · 19/12/2005 13:49

since when have lesbians engaged in sodomy? narrow-minded fools.

i agree, its great that gays get exactly the same rights as straight people. all pay same taxes etc etc.

morningpaper · 19/12/2005 13:50

No I'm not.

I just LOVE the fact that the legislation went through and no one really minds about it.

When you think that the American election basically hung on this point, for example.

I love the fact that there's hardly an objection of protest in this country.

It's FAB!

(That's what I thought TiredEmma, you surely need a penis for sodomy???!)

It's our great liberal tradition (I'm not being ironic either)

harpsiheraldangelssing · 19/12/2005 13:52

me too MP
I was out with some friends last weekend (two guys) and they announced that they were getting married, which is lovely because they have beenm together for ever... and the whole restaurant was cheering and clapping
I was quite choked up

TIREDofwrappingpressiesEMMA · 19/12/2005 13:52

alledgedly MP, maybe the protesters of belfast know something that we dont.

QueensSpeechEagle · 19/12/2005 13:53

Mp - I know you're not, was just teasing.

My dd and her girlfriend have been raving about this all last week.

I think it's well opverdue for gay couples to have the same rights and protection as straight couples.

That bloke looked a complete prat standing on the gates preaching at the lesbian couple this morning.

Epiffany · 19/12/2005 13:56

I remember when I was about 11 or 12 marching in NZ for gay rights, NZ was one of the first places to legalise homosexuality and enshrine gay rights in law. It also has a de facto couples rights law as well, for division of assets outside a marriage.

It's as much about the marriage as about gay partners having the same rights to proprty and assets as a married couple would.
My brothers best mate proposed to his boyf last week, asked his father for his hadn and everything and my brother has been asked to be best man

puddle · 19/12/2005 13:56

I explained all this to ds (5) this morning - he was interested about it when he heard it on the radio.

Imagine his delight when he worked out he could marry his (male) best friend.

handlemecarefully · 19/12/2005 13:58

Lol!

QueensSpeechEagle · 19/12/2005 13:59

puddle - bless him!

katierocket · 19/12/2005 14:00

I thought the same this morning MP.

NewBethlehemGirlwithsparkles · 19/12/2005 14:02

Thats made me Piff.

puddle · 19/12/2005 14:04

Yes, imagine the lego littered love nest they could create together?

I thought the same this morning and thought how far we've moved as a society.

GingerBearingGifts · 19/12/2005 14:32

Can you imagine a gay couple's wedding list though? I bet they are so finnicky and demanding to buy for. White dinner set from ikea just won't cut the mustard!

merryTissmas · 19/12/2005 14:45

Puddle, I had to correct myself when dd was discussing marriage:

"I want to marry a girl, i don't like boys"

"You can't marry a girl, well actually, you can, if you want to, but most grown up ladies want to marry men..you're a little young yet to make up your mind (4) you can't marry anyone till you're at least 16...why not wait a bit?...

homemama · 19/12/2005 15:11

On a more serious note though, it does show us to be poles apart from the Americans whose anti-abortion campaigners are hugely influential.

Worrying to think how much weighting they will get at the next election. GWB already seems to be leaning towards making it illegal again.

NewBethlehemGirlwithsparkles · 19/12/2005 15:18

Here you go. Loving the suits

BudaBabeInAManger · 19/12/2005 15:21

Oh Puddle - cute!

And gay sons usually look after their mothers REALLY well and love to go shopping!!

isn't it ironic that as more and more heterosexuals don't see the need to get married - gays are jumping at the chance

Blandmum · 19/12/2005 16:40

I think this is great news. Good luck to anyone who wants to formalise their commitment to each other.
