Lots of positive vibes that they get them out safely

It's terrible. Your posts have brought tears to my eyes, dee- My family were miners in the Wrexham area. I know Pontardawe and it's a lovely community, people are warm and funny.
It's the fact that this was commonplace that plays on my mind. People were living with the threat of this hanging above them. And now, in my beautiful enlightened country, the pits have taken more lives. It's so so sad. :(

I am so saddened by this news, have tried to keep up with it all day but only just heard the news that all were lost.

dee - your post was truly beautiful and made me weep.

May they rest in peace.

oh god, I just looked at that Hartley memorial - so many boys aged 10, 11, 12 Shock

very sad for the families of the lost Gleision miners tonight Sad

I really do think it is about time the UK stopped sending men underground to dig coal. We can bring it cheaply and safely from open cast mines in Australia and South Africa.

Underground mining is dangerous and expensive compared to opencast. I know it means jobs and the men did it because they wanted to support their families and that is a noble thing to do - but the UK could ban it tomorrow and it would make no difference to our economy.

Terrible news and so shocking nowadays. There's a memorial in a village near where I grew up to a dozen children killed in a mining disaster in Victorian times. Always made me shudder.

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 16/09/2011 23:19

I thought there hasn't been a fatal accident in the UK since 1979? There are other far more dangerous industries.

Desperately sad for the families but I wouldn't suggest banning the industry. We don't know the outcome of the inquest yet.

Ponders · 16/09/2011 23:24

there hasn't been much mining in the UK at all since the strike in 84

aleene · 16/09/2011 23:28

Please don't forget the 2 Scottish miners killed last November in NZ. We had days of waiting and will probably never be certain of the exact time of death and the bodies are still not recovered (29 in all). Inquiry being held in NZ right now where the safety procedures seem flawed and exit training was not given to the miners.

RIP to the Welsh miners. Sad

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 16/09/2011 23:38

Sorry aleene, I don't mean to forget them, (how awful for the families that the bodies still haven't been recovered) I was just meaning UK and what we should do with the industry here.

aleene · 16/09/2011 23:44

Don't apologise, i just wanted to remind people about what happened.

ripstheirthroatoutliveupstairs · 17/09/2011 19:36

Very sad. Condolences to the family and RIP miners.
