Lots of positive vibes that they get them out safely

It is so terribly sad. My great grandad and two colleagues died in a pit collapse (entire family miners going back hundreds of years) and I think of it as something that used to happen. Against a modern backdrop, it's even more shocking.

Those families must be in bits.

FagButt · 16/09/2011 14:44

oh no, this is truly awful, it looks increasingly grim for the remaining 2, let's hope for a miracle.

Such sad news to hear that two of the men have died in the incident and another two still remain missing :(

MetalSian · 16/09/2011 15:16

Third miner confirmed dead now =[.
Thoughts go out to their friends and familys.
So sad.

Northernlurker · 16/09/2011 15:25

May their souls rest in peace.
May their families find strength and comfort as they grieve together.
May all the rescuers stay safe in this dangerous and unpredictable situation.

chimchar · 16/09/2011 16:40

I can't help but think of the families who are still in this dreadful state of limbo, waiting to know the fate of their loved ones, not knowing who is still alive, and not having the identities of those who did not survive...

It's so dreadful. I think of the miners in chilie and how fantastic their safe return was. I had hoped that this too would have a happy ending.

A very sad time indeed, for all involved..

I posted a thread in chat about this last night.

Sadly three dead now, and it's reall not looking good for the remaining miner.

I live very close to here, less then a couple of miles, and although not personally affected myself, our community as a whole has been rocked to it's core, and i feel so so sad for everyone personally involved.

Years ago, strange as it sounds, this was an expected part of life in our area. We haven't known grief and devestation like this for a generation, and it is really shocking and heartbreaking.

It's just so so sad Sad

memphis83 · 16/09/2011 17:09

I used to live a few miles from here too, passing through everyday going to work, so so sad to hear this news, my heart goes out to their families and their friends. :(

TheOriginalFAB · 16/09/2011 18:06

All have died Sad.

The only consolation is that the families haven't had days of agony.

One woman has list her husband but her son was able to get out.

Lollyheart · 16/09/2011 18:10

Sad rip

Besom · 16/09/2011 18:14

Terrible news Sad

So sorry for the families and friends.

deemented · 16/09/2011 18:16

There's a cry in the Valley's, tears in the west,
Mourning the heroes, that wear the pit vest,
Underground grafters, always put in a shift,
Below in that hillside, in that deep, dark drift,
They ain't coming home to their children or wives,
... The mine once again, takes away cherished lives,
The coalfields of Britain , all unite in your mourn,
We're all of the same breed, we're pit village born,
May the heroes sleep peacefully and families stay strong.

When I was a student (Engineering Geology) in Newcastle, we went on a field trip to New Hartley in Northumberland. It's an old pit village where a shaft collapsed in 1862 and all the men and boys of the village were killed. There is a memorial to them in the church, with rows and rows and rows of the same surname. memorial www.fototime.com/ftweb/bin/ft.dll/detailfs?userid={58E08A8B-ADBC-42C8-A4E0-97D0D715519A}&ndx=7&slideshow=0&AlbumId={4EB76C40-5B26-489A-BD67-AB5BBBCEEA3A}&GroupId=&screenheight=600. That disaster changed legislation, I just suppose I didn't think something like this could happen again now in 2011. It's much smaller scale now I know, but it's still 4 families who've lost their sons, dads, brothers, best friends, drinking pals...

Dee. That poem is beautiful.

Did you write it?

I feel really sad about this....I hope that all those involved will feel enveloped in the support and feelings of loss all over tonight, particularly those of us in Wales.

deemented · 16/09/2011 18:46

It is beautiful, but no, i didn't write it.

JemimaMuddledUp · 16/09/2011 18:48

So sad :(

I come from a family of miners and many relatives were killed down the mines, but you just don't hear of it these days.

Madondogs · 16/09/2011 19:08

I am also Welsh, and live a few miles away from Senghenydd where the worst mining disaster in Britain took place in 1913. Both my grandfathers were miners, and the hospital where I work was payed for by the miners from the local pits. I have been crying all day,and my heart goes out to the families. Mining is a proud heritage but one that is sadly seeped in tragedy.

Peachy · 16/09/2011 19:13

Also in Wales. Not mining stock- farming.

Such a sad end, thinking of their famillies tonight.

Avantia · 16/09/2011 19:53

Used to live in Pontardawe many years ago . The whole thing is very sad .Sad
