apparently by deleting Milly's messages her family still had some hope that she might still be alive

Hunt is floundering, unsurprisingly, in the Commons trying to deal with questions now.

Either the CC or Ofcom have to stop this.

teej · 11/07/2011 17:08

how can we trust any review to be done without fear or favour when all previous decisions re NI have been driven entirely by fear and/or favour?!

noddyholder · 11/07/2011 17:09

Why do you think GB didn't tell them to F off and take them to court? What they did to him was so abhorrent he would have had almost complete public and govt support but he didn't so it wasn't as awful as potentially not reaching his ambitions wrt his career.

EldritchCleavage · 11/07/2011 17:12

No, I'm with CrackFox here. Not only did Brown do nothing, he cosied up to Brooks and Murdoch for years afterwards. The phone-hacking story started to come out on Brown's watch and he did nothing. He was in a position to know personally how off all this was and did not take any action to stop it.

Imagine the difference in outcome if his press release had revealed that a newspaper had bought/stolen his son's medical records and so he and Sarah were being forced to reveal the illness before the diagnosis had even been confirmed.

teej · 11/07/2011 17:24

so why wasn't cameron in the house of commons for that? any decent reason given?

Pannus · 11/07/2011 17:28

Dave Cameron just popped round here for a nice cup of fairtrade tea and a bit of homemade shortcake.

arazmataz · 11/07/2011 17:32

So is this thread going to go over the 2K mark?

NormanTebbit · 11/07/2011 17:37

Oh so not just those grubby tabloids then, eh? Sunday Times too...who'd a thunk it, eh?

teej · 11/07/2011 17:40

Grin pannus - organic ingredients in the shortbread, I hope?

Pannus · 11/07/2011 17:40

And the Sun - not too surprised about that one!

teej · 11/07/2011 17:43

araz by the sound of it this thread could hit 10,000 posts and we still wouldn't have had the full story Sad

arazmataz · 11/07/2011 17:44

Mmmm...so will it just go on and on?

Pannus · 11/07/2011 17:45

teej :o of course what else only the best for Teflon face!

threefeethighandrising · 11/07/2011 17:53

If you haven't seen it yet, 38 Degrees have launched a campaign:

TIME TO STAND UP TO MURDOCH

It takes no time at all and it's a really easy way to ask your MP to vote against the BSkyB bid on Weds.

teej · 11/07/2011 18:04

threefeet are they still even having a vote on Weds after today's announcement?

threefeethighandrising · 11/07/2011 18:14

Ha ha that'll serve me right for posting before looking at the news (been at work with no news all day).

please ignore me, as you were.

Terribletriplets · 11/07/2011 18:16

I may well be wrong but have been told that in America you can sue for distress. Please have a look at the New York Times, upthread. xx

Ponders · 11/07/2011 18:23

If you do that 38 degrees email-your-MP thing, add your phone number in the text of the message. (There isn't a box for it on the page)

I've had an email back from mine saying

'If you are one of my constituents, please ensure you have included your full name, address and contact telephone number. If you haven?t done so, please resend your email with this information.'

I didn't copy what I sent & I spent ages composing it Sad

arazmataz · 11/07/2011 18:25

I think that's a bit dodgy though. It means you'll be hounded with party phone calls come the elections.

arazmataz · 11/07/2011 18:26

Full name, address - yes, fair enough. But phone number? Why?

Terribletriplets · 11/07/2011 18:30

community.nytimes.com/comments/www.nytimes.com/2011/07/12/world/europe/12hacking.html#preview

I am no crusader but I wonder if commentators on this thread would like the readers of the New York Times know how y'all feel.

I don't think that they will feel good about the 7/11 stuff. I am only just catching up with teh GB stuff. I think that, of our recent pms, GB has come off the best

Please have a look at the NYT that I posted upthread.

Holy Cow indeed. TTx.

Ponders · 11/07/2011 18:31

triplets, they are likely to be charged under the \link{http://thinkprogress.org/justice/2011/07/11/265202/murdoch-gordon-brown-fcpa/\FCPA} in the US & that could cost them $100m just in costs while being investigated - if liable the fine could be billions.

'Legal experts told the AP today that his company could face criminal prosecution in the U.S. for his U.K. papers? alleged bribery of British police officers, which would be a violation of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA).
According to the the Department of Justice, ?The FCPA prohibits payments made in order to assist the firm in obtaining or retaining business.? Thus the papers? use of bribery to obtain information which helped sell newspapers could fall under the act?s purview.
And even though the bribery occurred entirely in Britian, NewsCorp is an American company, incorporated in Delaware, and held accountable for its foreign subsidiary?s actions. Even if the corporation wasn?t directly involved in bribery, it could be found in violation of the law for turning a ?blind eye.?'

Peachy · 11/07/2011 18:35

Perfectly possible to C&P the 39 degrees concept into a standard email and send via the 'they work for you' website.

Nothing make me happier than seeing my MP work for his income ;)

teej · 11/07/2011 18:42

threefeet sorry that was a real question as i'd been out on the school run and had missed quite a lot of the house of commons statement etc. i guess the answer is no, but still worth asking your MP to get his or her proverbial finger out!

noddyholder · 11/07/2011 18:52

i love you george
