Bornsicky - right on :)

This is the relevant Dennis Potter clip, it comes right at the very end of the interview. Thirty-three thousand views and counting

www.ft.com/cms/s/0/8c43aca6-ab18-11e0-b4d8-00144feabdc0.html#ixzz1Rjm3bkvW from the Financial Times - it's just an extract: about the mini-crisis at NOTW

Les Hinton, chief executive of Dow Jones, is being blamed by people close to News Corp, for failing to get to grips with the News of the World phone hacking scandal when he was in charge of Rupert Murdoch?s UK newspaper group.
Les [Hinton] will be sacrificed to save James and Rebekah,? one person familiar with the company said. ?It happened on Les?s watch,? another added: ?James was not even a director of News Corp at the time.?

?This is the time for a loyal shareholder to stand by his friends and allies, the Murdoch family,? Prince Al Waleed bin Talal, chairman of Kingdom Holdings, which owns 7 per cent of the company, told the Financial Times.
?This is a strong alliance. We do not chicken out when we face crisis; we get stronger,? he said, adding that Mr Murdoch, his son James and Chase Carey, chief operating officer, made ?an excellent trio? of managers. He added that he had urged Mr Murdoch for ?a dramatic and fast decision? to end the News of the World ?mini crisis? and focus on securing BSkyB.

Pannus · 10/07/2011 22:00

Sorry that should have read "the mini-crisis" at NOTW!!

BoulevardOfBrokenSleep · 10/07/2011 22:05

Thisisanicecage - "That Mail story linked to above, " 'PR men would think up a story and Rebekah's Sun and News of the World would run it, word for word. Some were complete fiction" fits perfectly with this."

Shock

Did the Mail seriously have the barefaced cheek to print that? Talk about pot/kettle!
(Have also read Flat earth news, so none of this surprises me really)

Pannus · 10/07/2011 22:18

"that is what we do - we go out and destroy other people's lives."
actual quote from the Harry (not Dennis) Potter article flagged above

MissMalprop · 10/07/2011 22:20

Looking at those pictures of Rebekah Brooks and Rupert Murdoch today she looks pregnant.

nutbrownhair · 10/07/2011 22:21

So confused..... why doesn't Cameron DO something? Or Murdoch for that matter? Still prioritising rebekah Brooks. Either seem to be both in denial and still think with arrogance that they are untouchable....or has Murdoch got something on Cameron? Conservatives seem frozen in the headlights. Either incompetent or hiding something-either is bad!

Pannus · 10/07/2011 22:30

Cameron is doing something - he's on speed trying to come up with anything to get him out of the clag. Murdoch is also doing something - flinging the blame at ex-employees!

Ponders · 10/07/2011 22:30

is that Harry Potter dress-up dialogue genuine? really? I can't believe it Confused

Pannus · 10/07/2011 22:36

Yes that was under the "old-guard" execs who Rebekah Wade she didn't know what they were doing!!!

BornSicky · 10/07/2011 22:40

I think Rebbekah Brooks was quite canny in that info/release. She claimed not to have known anything during her time as Editor. I think the pertinent question is if not then (which I strongly doubt), when did she learn? ...surely not last week or only in the last few months. Nobody is naive enough to believe that's true.

Interesting about Les Hinton being up for questioning. Yet again, sidestepping Brooks for another senior employee. Hmm

franke · 10/07/2011 22:44

I asked this question much further up the thread, but let me try again: Why has this all come out now and why is it suddenly such an avalanche? The hacking of the phones of Milly Dowler and the Soham families was known about months ago - Hugh Grant mentioned it in his article in the New Statesman in April. Why has it only been jumped on now?

Pannus · 10/07/2011 22:45

If you can't be bothered to read this the shorthand is Rebekah Wade/C ordered an employee to dress up as Harry Potter at various events and wanted him to parade around the NOTW office the day after the 11/11: quotes include:

Hi, Neville. I just wanted to check, given the enormity of events in America - will the editor still need me dressed up as Harry Potter for conference?
NT: Well, she knew exactly what was going on yesterday afternoon and she still wanted you to dress up then. I think you should just assume she wants you to do it now.

A few hours after the attack on the World Trade Centre, I was asked by Rebekah to dress up as Harry Potter. She wanted me to dress up and go to her office in the middle of the newsroom.
What person with any journalistic integrity can be humiliated like that, or told to perform like that?
SK: How did you deal with that?
CB: I was pretty dumbstruck, to be honest. I just said, "Right, okay", and left the office. The following morning, I called Neville before leaving home and asked him, given what had happened, did Rebekah still need me to dress up as Harry Potter?
I didn't prance around while the World Trade Centre was being bombed, for her personal amusement. I can't just stroll in.
GM: Why not? Charles, that is what we do - we go out and destroy other people's lives.

Ponders · 10/07/2011 22:48

nah, I think they'll get her. They'll be looking for evidence in the meantime (& I would hope there are enough disgruntled previous NotW employees who had time to take evidence with them) but in any case "I had no idea" just won't wash from the editor of a national daily Hmm

They'll get James Murdoch too - he signed the cheques to pay people off.

I am confident that both will end up in the dock one way or another Smile

Pannus · 10/07/2011 22:56

Franke - Why has this all come out now and why is it suddenly such an avalanche?

I don't know sometimes things have a momentum - the BskyB deal being decided upon this week is definitely something to do with it....

Empusa · 10/07/2011 22:58

So does anyone reckon Paul McMullen has been arrested yet?

Ponders · 10/07/2011 22:59

I don't know or understand why it's come out now (I had no idea about Hugh Grant's piece in April) - just glad it has, before it's too late Smile

It would be interesting to see a detailed timeline actually

Pannus · 10/07/2011 23:01

On twitter now that the USA is getting involved now that the Mirror has blown up that World Trade Centre victims (relatives of) were targetted....

franke · 10/07/2011 23:01

I did wonder if it was a last ditch attempt by the Guardian before the BSkyB deal went through. But it is truly incredible how it's taken on this momentum and all this new information coming through - it seems to me that many news editors have been sitting on this info for some time.

Pannus · 10/07/2011 23:07

Franke - the other thing that is pouring out is that Politicians, bbcand other media were scared of News International...... once the Guardian put its head above the parapet it just opened the floodgates. Murdoch hates the internet as it's uncontrollable and when this started 2 years ago twitter not around.... mumsnet etc not so big - they have been usurped by the people.

franke · 10/07/2011 23:14

But the Guardian's been plugging away at this for ages. I guess a tipping point was reached. I'm worried the momentum will be lost. Found the footage on the news earlier of a grinning Murdoch with Brooks, sickening and somewhat chilling.

ThisIsANiceCage · 10/07/2011 23:14

Hugh Grant's mention of Milly Dowler's phone was about a rumour (still shocking tho).

This Guardian story from last Monday includes a statement from the Dowlers' solicitor about a current police investigation about Milly's phone.

I'd guess either the solicitor or the Gruan were waiting for the end of the Levi Bellfield trial before announcing this. God knows the Dowlers have had enough on their plates.

Pannus · 10/07/2011 23:21

ThisIsANiceCage - yes you are right the Milly Dowler solicitor came out after the Levi Bellfield trial was over.... for me this was an absolute tipping point. I must have been asleep or too busy drinking fairtrade tea and eating shortbread before to notice.

Ponders · 10/07/2011 23:22

is that where it started then, TIANC? I remember seeing the Dowlers' lawyer on the late afternoon news when the story broke, but don't remember any more than that (not even which day but it must have been Monday I suppose)
