apparently by deleting Milly's messages her family still had some hope that she might still be alive

Justine: my buying habits have always been strictly anti-Murdoch so in that sense they won't change. However, this entire debacle has really brought home to me (and so many others) the extent to which the government, the police force and news international are entwined. This is wrong, on so many levels and can only ever end in corruption.

The breach of trust is total and unprecedented - in my lifetime anyway. If there is no integrity or moral standpoint in public office then, as a nation, we are fucked , totally.

And you can quote me to Paxman!

headfairy · 08/07/2011 14:21

donnie I don't know if he did... it's probably the rumour mill going bonkers again. So much going around at the moment, it's hard to know what's true and what isn't. RB offered to resign, didn't offer to resign, was in tears at the NoTW meeting, wasn't in tears... who knows. But boy I would love it if he had taped those conversations. There's probably a few lawyers at the Guardian offices now trying to work out if they can use the recordings (if they exist)

Ooh, good luck Justine!

The Geeky Stuff thread of people looking for alternatives to Sky is quite interesting, isn't it? And all this sharing of Murdoch-ownership lists through social media.

headfairy · 08/07/2011 14:23

justine My buying habits are also very anti Murdoch partly because he's desperate to bring down my employer.

Good luck tonight (you never know, I might bump in to you Wink)

headfairy - reminds me a little of when they got the tories in a spin once before---jonathan aitken, anyone...?

mrsdonkeybucket · 08/07/2011 14:24

Go get 'em, Justine !

Tell 'em how disgusted and angry we all are, and not just at the press, but the police and govt. as well.

You can mention my new meaning of our beloved PM's favourite catchphrase "We are all in this together", if you like ! Grin

He even used it in his PC today !!

VivaLeBeaver · 08/07/2011 14:26

I think a lot more is going to come out. Piers Morgan is being very quiet on twitter over this. I wouldn't be surprised if it's revealed that the mirror were up to the same.

If you read Morgans diaries from his time as editor he talks about how Blair used to play the sun and the mirror off against each other. Promise one of them a scoop to keep them on side and then give the scoop to the other paper.

I think that politicians in this country have been too intertwined with the papers for too long.

freybean · 08/07/2011 14:27

well this time last week i really didn't care about the take over or the clebs phone hacking

since it has all come out about milly's phone being hacked then i won't touch anything to do with RM

LizaTarbucksAuntie · 08/07/2011 14:30

Go get 'em Justine!

Littleredant · 08/07/2011 14:32

If what Peston says about Ofcom is correct, Mudoch will need to wait for some considerable time before he gets his hands on all of BSkyB. That won't help the share price of News Corp/NI.

GentleOtter · 08/07/2011 14:34

It is not just buying habits which will change; there is an entire knock on effect from boycotting certain media, mistrust of the police and phone companies, refusal of being patronised by polititians etc but the country appears to have found its voice and is refusing to be dictated to by RM and his tick like hold on people in power.

Perhaps the revulsion which people feel will start a chain of events which will illuminate the corruption and oppression from an imbalanced power.

jenny60 · 08/07/2011 14:34

Good luck Justine. Please let them know that we ARE NOT APPEASED by this closer of the NOTW and unimpressed by DC's pathetic defence of himself.

mrsdonkeybucket · 08/07/2011 14:34

I agree, Viva

I think there is a lot more to come. DC looked very stressed during his PC, I wonder, wonder, wonder what he's got to hide. I also concur with previous comments that it was odd that he stated "I and I alone employed Andy Coulson" ....in my eyes it makes him a bigger bloody prat than I already thought he was.

Could this be paving the way for DC to step down as PM, or for a vote of no confidence to take place ?

Strange that there has been no comment from Nick Clegg, not that he would contribute anything worthwhile. Wonder if he has been on the 'phone to Vince, apologising profusely ?

Blair always was as slippery an eel as DC.

I would like to see the 'people power', if that's what it was, extend to all NI newspapers being boycotted. Why should we let any of them get away with it ?

headfairy · 08/07/2011 14:38

Does anyone know if the Express Group pulling out of the PCC is connected in any way to this? It was back in January, but I wonder if they knew the screw was tightening on the methods the red tops use to get stories so pulled out of the PCC?

OP posts:
Ponders · 08/07/2011 14:38

Rusbridger says he briefed one of Cameron's close advisers against Coulson - not DC himself - but did speak to Clegg personally.

Prescott said on the news he wrote to DC advising him to steer clear of Coulson 2 years ago.

I heard on the radio (Media Show maybe) a suggestion that Cameron would not have been given this information, so that he could deny all knowledge if it became necessary later???? (Can that really be how senior politicians run their affairs? "Don't tell me anything that would affect my judgments & decisions now, in case it all goes tits-up later"? Hmm)

jenny60 · 08/07/2011 14:38

Sorry to take over again but am coming and going from work. But please can someone let me know wat they made of both DC's press conference and Nick Robinson's spin? I thought DC's press confernce was clealry a car crash and I thought NR was spinning big time. But I see that he seems to have changed his tune a bit on the BBC site since. It seems clear to me that DC's judgement must be considered terminlly flawed as he hired someone who either knew about the hacking etc... or someone who should have known. So he was incomptenent or complicit. Either way he was wrong. Surely?

donnie · 08/07/2011 14:39

Justine - as I said earlier on this (or the other) thread : if the people who have the power and influence in this country are the media, the government and the bankers then I am in utter, utter despair.

donnie · 08/07/2011 14:41

I bet Brown and Blair are enjoying this. For now.

LizaTarbucksAuntie · 08/07/2011 14:42

hear hear Donnie,

thefirstMrsDeVere · 08/07/2011 14:42

Justine!!! Wow. You will be fab.

Just tell them that I said they are all crap and then say Ner!

rainingandpouring · 08/07/2011 14:46

Tricoteuses mean anything ......?

Littleredant · 08/07/2011 14:47

Donnie & MrsDeVere: I couldn't agree more.
I think I mentioned Profumo in my first posting on this thread. Ironically, I just heard on R4 that Christine Keeler's expose was the first one by a Murdoch-owned NOTW!

mrsdonkeybucket · 08/07/2011 14:48

donnie I would love to agree with you, but why do you say if ?

They are exactly the people who have the power and influence in this country, and it's time we took it back.

The 'free dictionary' defines democracy as :

  1. Govt. by the people, exercised either directly or through elected representatives.
  1. A political or social unit that has such a considered govt.

3. The common people, considered as the primary source of political power.

  1. Majority rule.
  1. The principles of social equality and respect for the individual within a community.

And people still think WE live in a democracy ?

BornSicky · 08/07/2011 14:54

idly wondering what wikileaks could do with all the data. gurantee they could sift through mulcaire's notes and get to the truth faster than operation weeting.

on nick robinson - the man's a cameronphile and i think the beeb probably needs give him a little slap for that coverage... impartial, my arse.

gentleotter oh how i wish that might be true. i think they'll dig deep enough to get rid of the most visible mess, but there'll be all sorts of clamouring and shady deals done.

i think murdoch thought he could protect his bskyb deal, but it's looking shaky now, as is cameron.
