God, those NoW journos were utter scum weren't they?

apparently by deleting Milly's messages her family still had some hope that she might still be alive

RB & JM will both be dealt with - they can't be allowed to wriggle out of this one, & with the Guardian & Telegraph on the same side for once, they have no chance

jenny60 · 08/07/2011 10:02

Anyone watching DC press conference (instead of working)? OMG: he will not admit he was wrong on Coulson. Big, big mistake DC. You were not merely giving him a 'second chance' you were warned and got it very, very wrong.

happygilmore · 08/07/2011 10:05

I'm watching, think he looks very uncomfortable.

jenny60 · 08/07/2011 10:11

Doesn't he just and happy to see most the journos are not letting him away with it. They won't let the Coulson decision go. I think the I am a nice guy who just gave him a second chance is not working., He's looking more and more rattled.

jenny60 · 08/07/2011 10:14

But why isn't anyone asking him about RB?

Ponders · 08/07/2011 10:14

ooooh, this was full last night - glad it's been re-opened!

Ponders · 08/07/2011 10:15

Apparently he's denied being specifically warned about Coulson? Rusbridger & Oborne will have him for that

piprabbit · 08/07/2011 10:18

The only possible excuse for RB remaining in post, is that the Murdochs plan to sacrifice her at a time which is politically useful to themselves. She will be used to deflect attention from JM, or on the eve of the BskyB decision in order to prove that NI has cleaned themselves up.

What I don't understand is why she hasn't got the self-respect to walk instead of allowing herself to be exploited by NI.

jenny60 · 08/07/2011 10:19

I don't think RB understands the concept of dignity.

IroningBoardForSurfBoard · 08/07/2011 10:20

our PM is looking VERY uncomfortable during this isn't he?

jenny60 · 08/07/2011 10:20

Extraordinary how DC is allowing himself to be pushed further and further into a corner, especially on Coulson.

culturemulcher · 08/07/2011 10:48

Anyone else feeling queasy this morning?

Yesterday: People power! We won!

Today: No 'we' haven't won. We've been done over in a cynical move which at one stroke allowed News Int. to restructure and launch a cost-saving paper, and save RB's job. Lots of people with their job on the line. More families facing a grim financial future.

Sad

piprabbit apparently RB did hand in her resignation, but the News Int. board turned it down.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 08/07/2011 10:53

I am feeling queasy but probably because I've picked up a bug.

I really really hope the momentum stays up on this one, when you look at the outcome of the mps expenses and and the way the city still pay out huge bonuses, it seems that things never truly change. Musnt give up though, else we are giving up on our country.

ThisIsANiceCage · 08/07/2011 10:56

Not specially queasy this morning, because that's how I felt yesterday.

Closing NOTW was a wanton sacrifice intended to leave us dancing on its corpse while the real baddies snuck away.

Hasn't worked, has it.

jenny60 · 08/07/2011 10:56

Yes and no: I see no reduction in public anger and no sense that anyone sees the closing of the NOTW as anything but cynical. Neither have I ever seen DC given such a hard time. His news conference was a car crash but what was disturbing for me was Nick Robinson's spin on it, even in the face of the BBC's anchors prodding him: a good start was his view. This is an incredible summary of DC looking rattled, blushing, being evasive, refusing to apologise etc... I hope that Guardian and Telegraph keep the flag flying.

Terribletriplets · 08/07/2011 11:02

I posted this on the HG thread. Not defending DC's error of judgement but Blair was just as keen to be mates with RB. And more interesting is how the minders didn't want their hug filmed.

culturemulcher · 08/07/2011 11:02

NiceCage yup, me too. Went to bed feeling as though we'd been done over, and still feel the same this morning. That flash of 'people power' didn't last long.

I just can't understand how it's taking so long for the story to move on from just the NoTW to the other tabloids. We all know they were using exactly the same techniques... and from reports yesterday we can add car tracking and bugging to the list. I'd love to see The Sun getting the same scrutiny.

Or is it too late? Have the many months since this story surfaced given the reporters / investigators on other papers the chance to shred their notebooks?

BornSicky · 08/07/2011 11:04

RB and both Murdoch's still haven't lost anything, been charged with anything, or been held to account.

very proud of the grauniad for plugging away at all this, but i still don't think cameron has got any measure of this at all. in fact, i think, given his close ties to everyone involved, that he needs to appoint someone else entirely to manage this. either that or fess up to all his failures of trust and let the people judge.

i wish milliband would step up better; and isn't it about time we heard from Clegg?

BornSicky · 08/07/2011 11:04

stray apostrophe - apologies

CinnabarRed · 08/07/2011 11:06

You'd think that the many months would have given NOTW time to start shredding, though, wouldn't you? Wouldn't think that people who were prepared to do the things they did would baulk at destroying a few inconvenient documents.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 08/07/2011 11:08

BBC saying AC has been arrested.

culturemulcher · 08/07/2011 11:09

cinnabarRed one of the TV reports yesterday said that someone from NOTW asked the company in India which archives all their emails/documents, etc to delete certain files. The Indian company turned down the request.

catinthehat2 · 08/07/2011 11:10

Yes. Clegg. Very good point

Remind me, what's he there for exactly?

BornSicky · 08/07/2011 11:10

AC arrested... after being given bucket loads of notice. bet his shredder was working over time! that and lots of little secret stashes for later.

i mean, come on! in a case this serious, the police give a lead suspect more than 12 hours to sort himself out before arresting him...

Angry grr grr

lastonetoleaveturnoutthelights · 08/07/2011 11:11

Yes Clegg's been very quiet on all of this hasn't he. So too has Cable, who got in trouble for saying he was going after Murdoch a few months ago. Do you think they have a game plan or are worried for their own skins?
